Oh no, hard to believe

I have a feeling the crash was probably caused by a drone.

What makes you think that? N72EX Flight Tracking and History 26-Jan-2020 - FlightAware

Looks like it hit the hillside at 150mph. Likely Kobe didn’t know what hit him.

Initial reports say that the helicopter was flying in foggy conditions before it crashed and burst into flames on a hill close to the city of Calabasas in Los Angeles County, California at about 9:45 am local time. It was on a flight from Orange County John Wayne Airport. The crash site was first attended by the Los Angeles Country Fire Department. It reportedly took until about 10:30 am until the fire was extinguished.

In Air Traffic Control (ATC) recordings obtained via LiveATC, a controller can be heard advising the helicopter, which is flying under ‘Visual Flight Rules’ (VFR) conditions, that it is flying to low. The pilots did not respond to the radio call.

rip?

R.I.P Kobe
It’s hard to believe that you are gone.

I thought he was kind of infamously known for acting like a d-bag & general stereotypical prima donna

RIP the other people

OK, please allow me rephrase;

I meant Class act on the court.

What he did, or did not do, in his personal life is no business of mine.

How about R.I.P. for all involved ?
All the people.
Peace out.

Initially the report was Five people on board. After listening to the Press conference several hours ago the Sheriff stated there were Nine.

Beside Kobe and his Daughter there was a Baseball coach name John Altobelli. His wife and daughter were also with him. Very sad.

Main article: Death of Kobe Bryant
At 9:06 a.m. Pacific Standard Time on January 26, 2020, Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, and seven others departed from John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, in a Sikorsky S-76 helicopter owned by Bryant. Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli was also killed in the crash. The helicopter was registered to the Fillmore-based Island Express Holding Corp., according to the California Secretary of State business database.

The helicopter crashed in Calabasas, California, at about 9:47 a.m. and caught on fire. The helicopter had passed over Boyle Heights, near Dodger Stadium, and circled over Glendale during the flight. Personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department attended the scene. The fire had been extinguished by 10:30 a.m. None of the nine passengers on board the helicopter survived. Initial reports indicated that the helicopter crashed in the mountains above Calabasas in heavy fog. Witnesses reported hearing a helicopter struggling before crashing.[463]

The FAA and NTSB launched investigations on the day of the crash.

Kobe and his daughter Gianna.

So sad. Whether you are a Lakers fan or not, that guy was talented. And as a parent, the fact that his daughter was with him is heart breaking.

VFR in fog?

That was my first thought, too. You would think that a good pilot would avoid flying in conditions that would make it hard to see a mountain. But hindsight is always 20/20…I’m sure it’s not that simple.

Agreed. We need to enjoy each day. Does not matter who we are, Fame or no fame,we can be taken at any moment.

I was born in the midwest and lived in Philly area for more than 30 years. He went to Lower Merion High School about 10 miles from center city.He loved Philly teams and I just heard a clip on him on WIP radio the moment the Eagles beat the Patriots. It was pretty cool!

Kobe was young in my mind, just Forty One. I am old enough to be his Father. When I look at his Daughter who was only 13 and John Altobelli’s daughter[not sure her age] it makes it that much more tragic.

Will be interesting to see what type of Ground Proximity Warning System this particular Sikorsky S-76B had, or didn't have. The sophistication of such a system will likely be dependent on the age of the aircraft. First introduced in the seventies, the S-76 model revisions appears to go from A through D.

Update 1/29 from TMZ:

A pilots perspective:

Proof that nobody gets out of this alive.
