Saying hi for the first time

Hi to all on the forum, I’ll start by saying I am not a technical sort of bloke, I am a keen Hunter and that puts me into night shooting alot.
Have moved into night vision at the end of last year and my main bunny hunting lights are my c8s which have gone through up grades. I owe a lot of thanks to a youny fellow David Sunshine who has been patiently teaching me for the last 4 years or so,on how to do upgrades finding me parts etc. As my user name suggested! I am in New Zealand and it was David that linked me to the site and said you guys know a thing or two about lights.
My present project is to up grade another c8 to a powerful red led if there’s such a thing for night work at this point a red headlight wouldn’t go a miss either when hunting and moving around.
One of the c8s got upgraded to a 940 IR.So thats as tech as I get.
So hopefully I can understand some of what you are saying when it comes to the technical stuff.
Look forward to future posts.

Welcome to BLF, Kiwi-Hunter ! I have done a few tests with red leds and IR leds over the years, although I have no use for them like you. A current very good performing red led is the Cree XP-G3 in 660nm, it should do a pretty good job in a C8 with 2.5A or 3A driver.

Welcome kiwi

I’d love to see various colours coming out a c8+

What would be good colours for hunting at night
I’m not a hunter but I’m planing to sell modified c8+ and maybe few others convoys in finland

Thanks djozz
Appreciate the heads up on the red iled.

Hi forsh
Night vision red led is best! I think your eyes stay turned and no black spots like going from white light to dark.
Animals don’t react to the red light unless hounded by shooting. But generally they don’t spook and run off.
KH

I might have to give these a try for the C8’s I sell. I’ve had a few inquire over the years but didn’t think a whole lot of it.

Simple, C8 host, standard 7135x6 driver, and a red xp-e2 produces this for about 25 or $30 dollars

Thanks RobertB
The picture looks intense in the spot with scattered light from off the beem. What distance does that throw to? It’s certainly getting some bounce back off the fence.
Have you tried that on animals to see if they react to it? I have a notion that if the light is to intense it will spook game instead of holding them.Game animals should take no notice, that is the idea of the red spectrum its also the easiest on yourself as you move around, especially with night vision.
It’s a trade off! While some very intense white lights can hold some game! My understanding is if its too bright for the morning look, sort of! then they’re off at pace and the light hasn’t held them. In saying that, all game react differently on any given moment.
So here’s the thing that affects me in doing a good thrower while deer size game can be taken out at 150+ yards at night distance is deceptive and depth prospective can be away off unless you know the area you are in and have points of reference, that makes the shot to the vital area important. Judge that distance wrong game can be missed or wounded and lost. So for small game such as rabbits at night 75, 80 yards is along shot with .22 subsonic ammo! unless you have a very steady support! hunting isn’t like shooting off a bench rest.
I am currently doing pest control on a golf course in a built up area, it requires placement shots! so the closer I am to the animals the more affective the management will be.
Hopefully you can see the trade off, great to see a rabbit at 150 or 200 yards! I can shoot in some areas with a more powerful rifle. But I am not going to shoot them at that range at night in a built up area nor do I want to frighten them so they don’t stay around. Every rabbit missed is now educated that the red light area isn’t good to stay around in.
Hopefully you can see my point, and hopefully I build a couple of different red lights for the purposes I’ve said.
Your light on deer I would be interested in, some of what I’ve said also depends on the hunting pressure and the animals are just planly put on alert with any change.

It’s illegal to hunt deer at night, and I don’t hunt rabbit. But coyotes don’t seem to be bothered by the red light. Using an electronic coyote call (distressed rabbit), we get them to come in fairly close. Usually within 50yds/meters or so. That fence in the picture is about 25meters. With this light, you can see out to roughly 75 with the naked eye, and pretty well out to 100 looking through the scope. We found with coyotes, we have to change up the call, not the light. A thermal scope is the way to go, but I don’t have a spare $3000 for a decent one.

Hi RobertB
Thanks for your response, its not illegal to hunt deer on private land at night here.
I’ve seen the YouTube coyote videos and they do seem to come right in close.
My son brought a red led c8 off ebay and he’s been using it for rabbits! it’s not that bright, but sounds about the same, a 100yd would pull it up. Your picture looks brighter than his unit.I said I was going to build one, but he had already jumped in and brought it. Still between the two of us we should have a time hunting together with the red moons.
The thermal is a option and have you looked at the Pard sa25 or 45 out of the UK it has good reviews from the uk night vision forum or contact Pard China well priced bit of kit.
I am running the pard nv007 and its budget night vision but am get fantastic results.

Sounds nice. Here in the US, the only time you can hunt deer at night is, if you’re a farmer and have a kill permit. And some states don’t even allow that. Wild Boar and Coyotes are fair game. My brother has a farm in Tennessee. About 5yrs ago, they killed 40 coyotes in a two week period. My brother was losing chickens, and the neighbor farms were losing calves. Going to head down there this spring for another round. The coyotes are back again.

Been looking at the ATN Thor 4

Hi and welcome neighbour. All the best for your modding ventures.

Thanks MRsDNF
Is there someone reliable for parts in Ozzie?
Will try djozz suggestion.

It's good to have you here, Kiwi-Hunter!

(Just as long as you're not a NZ Shooter.)

Thanks raccoon city
That’s all good, if you know the difference between a hunter and a shooter.
KH

Sorry for the confusion...

I was making an inside joke.

Years ago there was a troublemaker on BLF with the username NZ Shooter.

It was a big deal way before your time here on the forum.

Hello from an also new person  There is a lot to read here and I’m slowly digging through it. Problem is the more I read the more I want to buy more flashlights.

Since I prefer to stay married I’m going to try and resist.

No worry’s, I got it and stretched it some.
KH

Buy her a couple, it didn’t work for me, but it might for you.
Give it a try.

Maybe but dont know who. Cutters for leds but check stock first before ordering.
