Any advantage of XPL2 vs xpl hi?

Nitecore E4K has XPL2 as compared to XPL Hi. I know Hi has less lumen but more throw.

What advantages does XPL2 have? Better runtime? Better tint?

Asking because I have several lights using hi but none with XPL2 and was wondering if any pros worth buying. Thanks!

More lumens. (better runtime if you set at equal intensity)

The tint of the XPL2 is ugly, thats the main reason people opt for other emitters

XP-L2 makes more lumens, but has terribly ugly tint unless it’s behind a pretty strong diffuser. So it works well in a light bulb, but not in a flashlight.

XP-L HI works well in a flashlight.

XP-L2 has slightly higher efficiency and max output at the cost of a floodier beam and truly awful tint shift/Cree rainbow.

I tried out a triple XPL-2 setup and the tint was actually quite nice …. but only when used as a mule with no optic.

Just mount directly to your forehead…and there you have it… high efficiency and a great tint!

Hahahahah. Yeah that might work.

I was surprised with my XPL2.

  • With a Carclo optic installed I got an ugly yellowish green hotspot.
  • But when I took off the optic and used it as a mule, the tint became quite rosy. It almost looked like a Nichia 219B’s tint.

The XP-L2 5D4 from Simon, albeit behind a 45dg TIR, is very rosy and one of the prettiest emitters I’ve seen. It makes the FD2 SST-20 4000K 95CRI look like crap and even my rosy mixed 3500K E21A looks less good than the 5D4.

However Simon doesn’t want to buy a new 1000pcs batch because he believes long term storage causes leds to rust :person_facepalming:

Same story with SST-20. It emits most of its green spectrum to the side, so the forward-facing part of a mule looks really nice. The beam only looks bad when focused.

So I took the optics out of my 18-LED soda can lights and the result looks much nicer now. But the only time I need that type of beam is while shooting photos indoors at night. It’s great for getting a global illumination effect via ceiling bounce.
