Father Daughter Flashlight

My 17 year old daughter has asked to use my EDC flashlights numerous times over the past several years. I’m reluctant since I’m worried about them being dropped. They’re all flashlights I’ve spent lots of time modifying, so I’m very (perhaps overly) protective of them. And I don’t believe I’m being too paranoid since she literally drops her iPhone several times a day.

I’ve suggested she use the family flashlights, but she says they are either too big (4 AA) or too weak (1 AA).

So I figured it was time for her to have her own flashlight. A flashlight that I don’t have to worry about getting dropped, dinged, scratched, etc. But nonetheless, a good flashlight since after all she’s the daughter of a BLF member.

She was actually exited to build a flashlight together. She picked out a purple S2+ host and liked how the 4000K Nichia 219C looked in one of my flashlights. So I took the LED out to make a triple 219B for myself. A win, win! I also got her a Samsung INR18650-35E 3500mAh protected battery and an XTAR ANT MC1 Plus charger.

For whatever reason, it took several months for us to finally get together to work on the flashlight. I took everything apart ahead of time. First she assembled the tail and then we worked on the head. I soldered one side of the MCPCB and she did the other. Mine took 15 seconds, hers took 15 minutes. Can you guess which side she did?

She learned about pills, reflector spacers, retainer rings, MCPCB, thermal compound, and then I started to see some yawning. So while I was finishing things up, she got the charger out and started charging the battery.

By the time the battery was full, it was dark and we tested it out. She loves it!

1 Thank

15 mins or not, looks like she still got it done! Very cool

ok but she coulda had a stock S2+ months ago!

they aren;t THAT bad stock ( i have one )

wle

My daughter (10) has a stock purple S2+ with 3x7135 and biscotti

Agreed, she made a good soldering joint.

Agreed, but she liked the Nichia over my Convoy S3 with a Cree XM-L2 T6 4C LED. Plus she has the BLF A6 firmware so she can forward and reverse click through 7 levels (including moonlight), chose mode memory, and check on the battery.

She likes all these features vs a basic flashlight. Hmm, I wonder why?

I’ve been soldering fifteen years and that looks better than I can do!

Good job! I did 25 yrs for Goodyear maint. I would take that solder join any time. Commend that young lady!

As it says in my country: “De tal palo tal astilla

According to googlll translator: “Of such stick such splinter”
According to Quora “He/she is a chip off the old block” or “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Thanks, I’ll let her know!

Myself and the kids did the same thing. The boy (12) and the girl (14) have different taste in tint. The boy likes 6000k and up. The girl 4000 to 5000. They did everything themselves with just a bit of guidance from me. I honestly think they could have done without me but, they would wind up chasing each other around with a soldering iron.

Great of you to take the time and patience to do that. Kudos to you sir.

Thanks toddcshoe. She’s the only one in the family (besides me) that likes a warmer CCT, but 4000K is her limit. I’m thinking she could be a tint snob! :open_mouth:

Good show!! 4000-5000K rules!!
