Noob Saying Hello

Just wanted to register instead of lurk like I’ve been doing for the last few weeks. I’ve always liked flashlights but never really owned any “real” lights (aside from some model of a Streamlight Strion 15 years ago or so). Back in 2011-ish, I bought a Fenix LD10 and LD20. They got decent reviews and were cheap enough. The LD10 has been my EDC since. Recently, I’ve been getting more into the idea of buying some real (current) lights and have already picked up a few. I bought a Nitecore MH25GT. Nice light, not a fan of the UI. Just doesn’t seem very intuitive to me? Seems like a decent, all-around, smallish light. I have an FT03 (SST) and an Acebeam K75 on order now  Still looking for a good EDC. Pocket carry, AA/14500 or MAYBE an 18650 light. Seems that there are literally hundreds of decent lights out there for this. I want more max output than my old LD10 (100 lumens, on a good day, years ago), but I do need a moonlight or firefly mode also as I sometimes work on electronics in low-light/no light conditions and cannot compromise the night vision of Air Traffic Controllers.
Anyway, sorry so long. Just wanted to say hello and maybe get pointed in the right direction.

Welcome to BLF!

Btw, in 2012 my first “serious” light was also the Fenix LD10, of course, aside from the 2d Maglight when l was a teenager.

Welcome to BLF ” kjmdrumz3 “.

Thanks tatasal and “CNCman” :stuck_out_tongue: . In addition to the FT03 and K75 I have on order, I may or may not have ordered a couple of additional lights like Lumintop Micro GT, EDC18, FW1A, Tool AA 2.0, EDC01, Anker Bolder LC40, Nikron N7 and N72, ThruNite Ti3, and Ultra Tac A1 V2. Just wanted to kind of get a mix of different lights for different uses :innocent: . There are a TON of interesting lights around and under the $50 mark. Wow.
One curious thing, though. I ordered the K75 from NiteTorch but haven’t received a confirmation email (ordered Monday evening). Just wondering if anyone has any experience with them and if that is normal? Usually confirmation emails go out immediately.

Thanks for signing up, kjmdrumz3!

You guys see any obvious light that I absolutely HAVE TO HAVE that isn’t on the list? Thanks! -Adam from Oklahoma City

I'm looking forward to the FW21 PRO.

If it's as good as it should be, it'll be a perfect EDC for me.

Adam stay awhile and listen…

That’s the plan! There’s a ton to learn!

Greetings from Cornwall ….it gets dark here too and I love flashlights…( or Torches ) as they are known in the UK.
I also love Zebralights…and one you must have is the SC64w…super low moonlight…ample high and fantastic Ui……
If its a headtorch for work then any of the H600`s…used them for years in my line of work ( vehicle breakdown & recovery ) and they have NEVER let me down …
Have fun researching and keep asking questions ……great bunch of guys in this forum. :+1:

Good to see another Okie on the board.

So many lights…

D4V2 XP-L Hi is a favorite of mine.

Appreciate it! I’ll check out the Zebralights!

My son is an Okie. I’m a transplant :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey bub

Welcome to BLF kjmdrumz3! Looks like you may (or may not) have a bunch of cool flashlights coming in the mail.

I’ve got MH20s and a MH20GT, and the ’20 is about as compact an 18650 light as you’ll get. The ’20 has been my edc for quite some time and not likely to be displaced anytime soon. Love the dual-stage switch and the UI.

I’ve had a bunch show up already. Still waiting on my 14500 cells to run those lights at full power before I truly decide how I feel about them. Also, still waiting on the FT03, Nightwatch NI40, Ultra Tac A1 v2, and FW1A. I won’t be testing lumens (Don’t have the equipment or know-how, yet), but I will be giving my opinion and run down of each light for any other noobs that might come across this post.

Ok, so most of my lights are in and I’ve had a chance to play with them. I’ll compare them by the category that I feel they fall in.

AAA lights: Lumintop EDC01 vs ThruNite Ti3 v2
To be honest, I’m a much bigger fan of the Ti3 for a few reasons. The low of .04 lumens is perfect for my needs. Works awesome for night-adjusted eyes, and I need a super low mode for work related things. While neither one are “throwers”, obviously, the Ti3 is brighter and throws further than the EDC01 imo. I also like that the Ti3 always starts on moon mode. However, the threads on the Lumintop feel smoother. Both are built well, but I’d choose the Ti3 for my needs.

AA/14500 lights:
I won’t count my almost 10 year old LD10 here. Still a solid light, but is absolutely dwarfed by today’s options. I also won’t count the GT Micro as I feel it’s in its own class, really wouldn’t be EDC’d, and would be much better off in a bag or jacket pocket. So we have the Lumintop Tool AA, UltraTac A1 v2, and the Nicron N7. All on 14500’s. I don’t like the N7 as an EDC, although it is the brightest of the group. It has the tightest beam and furthest throw, but color quality is subpar imo. It is a light I would throw in my work bag of car. Very usable light, great runtimes, but I wouldn’t EDC it. Also, it needs a button top. For me, the winner of this group is the UltraTac. To be fair, the first one I received was DOA. Bad tail switch. The second one has been great. The tail switch on the Lumintop is better. But the UltraTac is a couple of mm shorter, brighter, has a tighter center spot, and more throw. Neither flashlight carries deep in the pocket with the included clips (which are exactly the same except for color). The reflectors look exactly the same size, and I’d be interested in swapping the orange peel in the UltraTac for the smooth reflector in the Lumintop. I wonder if I could get a bit more throw out of the UltraTac. If the answer is yes, it would be my EDC. If you need a thrower, the GT Micro is it. Absolute monster for its size, but the shape makes it unusable as a pocket carry for me.

Single 18650 lights:
We have quite a few in this category. Nitecore MH25GT, Anker Bolder LC40, Lumintop EDC18, Nicron N72, Nicron N72-UV, and a cheap $9 Amazon special. First of all, don’t waste your money on the Amazon light or the Nicron UV. The UV is not a bad light but the regular N72 is much better. If you need a UV light there are much better options out there. I wouldn’t EDC either Nicron 72, but the regular N72 will have a place in my work bag. Magnetic tail cap and ability to swivel the head to a 90* light (or anywhere in between) is what makes me choose it as a work light. Anyone that works with their hands and finds themselves needing more light on occasion would be well served by the Nicron. Both Nicrons are built like tanks.
If you don’t need the magnetic tail cap, the Anker Bolder LC40 is smaller, lighter, cheaper, and brighter with better throw and a more pleasant beam imo. Some won’t like the non-replaceable battery, but in this case I like it. Also, a lot of guys don’t like the hold for on/off but it doesn’t bother me. It’s just different. This light would not be pocket EDC for me, but makes the “bag” list. Since I also carry a portable battery pack for my phone, etc. in my work bag I don’t have the need to also carry an extra battery for the light. This is a great light for $19!
The MH25GT is a great light. It’s built well, throws the best, and has a nice beam. But for me, it loses based on cost alone. At $70, it’s more than double the cost of every other light in the category (except the EDC18 at $50, but more than 3.5x the Anker). To be fair, it does come with a nice 3400 mAh battery, but I’d still choose another option over the Nitecore. It’s big, and would absolutely not be carried in a jeans pocket. Throw it in a bag or jacket and you are good to go.
The EDC18 is my favorite carry light so far and also the biggest light that I would personally pocket carry. It’s compact enough (short), built well, and bright as hell. I do wish it was a little less floody, and didn’t get so hot so quick. But I guess those are the compromises. It’s usable on high for quite some time before it gets what I would consider “too hot”. Turbo is best reserved for short bursts. Still waiting on a few other EDC pocket carry candidates, but this one is it for now.
Lastly we have the Astrolux FT03 and Acebeam K75. I’m not comparing these two to each other or any other light I have at the moment. I’m still waiting on a few competitors for the FT03. The FT03 is a great light. I’ve only run it on the 26650’s, but I’ve read it is about 20-25% brighter (at least initially) on a 21700. If weight wasn’t a concern, it would for sure go in my work or EDC bag. It would also make a great car or truck light IMO. For around $60 (including a cell), I’m not sure there’s a better option out there if you aren’t looking for a pocketable light.
The K75 is what it is. A throw monster. Almost a niche light. Do I need it? Absolutely not. I could have bought all of my lights a second time for the cost of this thing. Do I love it? Absolutely! If you need to see any real distance, it’s perfect. Lights up a radio tower at 400m like it’s daylight. As far as the monster throwers are concerned- they all perform similar and the prices are close. If you need one, pick one and stick with it.

Anyway, I’m still waiting on a few lights to arrive. Astrolux C8, FW1A, Convoy S2+, BLF A6, ThruNite TC15, Neutron, and T10 II. I know this “review” wasn’t very scientific. But I’m hoping it could help another noob in their search for their first (or next) light. There is a lot of information on this forum and I couldn’t be happier finding it. Thank you guys for everything!
