Large Ferro Rods

Hello everyone.

I an looking for Ferro Rods like the ones linked below on AMZ but less expensive. I plan on using then for a kids craft Scout type project and need like 7 or so. These are perfect but a little expensive for the amount I need. They have to have a hole drilled in them and be medium to large in size. Its no hurry so AE BG Ebay and other shops are good.

Thanks

Those bayite rods might feel expensive (which are really not when compared to the more branded ones) but they will throw crazy sparks and last a very long time…

Since these are standard 1/2” you could easily cut some chunks of wood and drill a hole the middle to have them attach custom handles, pretty cool project IMO, gripping the bare rod isn’t too easy for kids.

Yea I was thinking about that and also adding add some fire cord to the project as well.

Magnesium sacrificial anodes for water heaters are a good way to go if you don't mind cutting the rod into the lengths you want. Just make sure you get 100% magnesium rod and not some cheap imitation.

Like this?

hmmm, i have only bought one (which gave me a lifetime supply). It doesn't have a steel core. Maybe because it doesn't need structural strength at 7/8" diameter. I just looked for one that had a good price drop at the time (used Keepa.com to find price drops). Here is what I bought at the time.

I think I suggested something you;re not looking for. I use magnesium rod to create magnesium shavings. Then I use a ferro rod to ignite the shavings. I apologize for the mix up. I scare myself sometimes.

I got you. Good idea anyway !
