New EDC light

Upon all my reading before finding this forum, noctigon emisar really interests me. I’ve found two models i’d like more info/opinions on.

Does the kr4 ti have the color changing aux lights?

is it substantially smaller than the d4v2 ti?

What does the d4v2 ti have over the kr4 ti if any?

The Kr4 has aux leds, larger than a D4v2, as for differences not much besides tailswitch vs sideswitch.

AFAIK, about the same size, I believe the KR4 is longer due to the tail switch. Both are similar in being quads with aux color changing and configurable LEDs. Really just depends on your preference for side vs. tail switch. Both run Anduril.

Do you think the tail cap is better for pocket EDC? Do they both feature the same driver/feature set? It looks like the kr4 is a bit slimmer? But not as grippy?

For pocket rockets like these safer to put it in lockout mode only takes 4 fast clicks, I find my Kr4 is slightly thicker and has more grip than my D4v2, I believe the D4v2 has a different driver but you can request the same driver from the Kr4 from Hank at no additional cost.

Also, what batteries do you recommend in either light? I have an xtar v2 charger I’ll be using.

What is different about the kr4 driver than the d4v2?

If I recall correctly the normal driver in the D4v2 is regulated up to 350mA while the Kr4 driver is regulated up to 5A only downside-ish thing is the Kr4 driver’s moonlight isnt as low as the standard D4v2 driver, But thats about it.

As for batteries my go to cells have always been either VTC6’s or 30Q both fantastic cells.

Some observations on these 2 lights:

  • KR4 is larger, thicker and heavier than the D4v2. The bezels are the same diameter, but the rest of the light is thinner on the D4v2. This is quite obvious when you pick both lights up in your hands or see them side-by-side. But it’s a bit unexpected if you looked at the clean-looking KR4 and think it ought to be narrower than the D4v2. Especially so if you own an FW3A and expect the KR4 to be the same size…. it’s not.
  • The grip on the KR4 is good with its tiny ridged rings, but I personally find the deep square-cut knurling on the D4v2 to provide considerably better grip.
  • KR4 has a more advanced driver which provided regulated output to 5 amps, compared to 350mA for the D4v2.

Ok! Sorry for all the questions, I’m learning a ton here. Regulated 5a vs 350ma, benefit? Does that just allow the light to slowly die off or die suddenly, I forget. Weight isn’t a concern as I wear a belt. Neither is length, to a degree. But if there both close in diameter, would the kr4 be the better choice? I like the look of the d4v2, not picky about switches. Since they’re close enough in price I’m looking for the “better” light. I know that’s subjective and I see they both have the same output lm, but the regulated 5a… advanced driver (better battery life?), etc has me wondering… thanks for being patient guys! I’m wanting to purchase a light to hold me over for a bit and I’m having a hard time choosing.

Oh, also, is the 100lm difference between the xp-l hi and the sst-20 5k worth the purchase of the hi?

The 5A CC driver has better efficiency between ~150lm and turbo…

SST-20 5000K are very greenish and I would never suggest them. SST-20 4000K for color quality, XP-L HI 4000/5000K for output (same throw/intensity but wider beam) and running cooler.

What would you all go with for edc… kr4? If they’re both similar diameter, I kinda want the kr4… but if the d4v2 is A LOT lighter and slimmer, that’s a no Brainer

I guess I don’t understand the driver difference with regulated 5a, etc. Does the driver and build quality (kr4 being heavier, etc) make the d4v2 a lesser light.

Well to break it down to the basics the original D4v2 driver IF you were to say have its output ramped to match 5A regulated of the Kr4 the output of the D4v2 would be correlated to the voltage of the battery, while the Kr4 driver at on the other hand at 5A would maintain its output till the cell is depleted and unable to power the light at that output level.

From my understanding the Kr4 is heavier as its built differently to accommodate the inner tube for the tailswitch to function, while the D4v2 has a sideswitch had most of its internals built into the head of the light, And no it doesn’t make the D4v2 a lesser light I have both and they are great lights it just preference at that point if you prefer a side switch to a tail switch.

that is normal

there are a lot of factors to consider, and different people have different use case scenarios

I suggest you plan on buying and trying several different lights, to develop your own personal preferences.

one man’s ceiling, is another man’s floor

there is a guy that thinks the RRT-03 light is perfect,
for him to flood his driveway with bright light
that light only has 3 modes, and the lowest is 80 lumens

to me it is useless, because I use my lights indoors, at low levels, and I dont like to waste lumens on wide floody beams. I prefer single LED lights.

So I like the Jetbeam RRT-01, and recommend you try one.

IF I was to recommend an Anduril light, it would be the FW3a
here is one for sale
it has a better pocket clip than the KR4 and D4… among other reasons

it is coming time for you to open your wallet so you can begin to determine your own personal preferences

share your impressions of whatever lights you buy

Kr driver is Just more efficiënt and more stable at medium to high levels.

You could ask for a d4 with kr driver.

An other thing is that the kr driver has more problems with the lowest level. If you use moonlight a lot, that’s something to consider.

Funny enough I was looking at the fw3a…

I don’t use moonlight often. How would I go about asking for a different driver?

You could email Hank at intl outdoor if he is willing to put one together.
