New Guy: Hello BLF!

Hi BLF!

After lurking both CPF and BLF for a couple of months I decided to register here to get excellent advise and also post my future flashlight collections/build!

Welcome to the forum, Snakedoc9.

What kind of lights do you like best?

Welcome, Snakedoc9.

What part of the world do you hail from? We have folks from just about everywhere here and I can honestly say this is the most friendly forum I have ever come across. I'm sure you'll enjoy your time here. Welcome again.

Welcome.

Throw your wallet in the bin at the door.

Thanks Guys! I hailed from Philippines and my 1st flashlight was / is a Surefire G2 incan .

Loved it alot! Compact, durable and have a nice output (back in the early 2000's) Getting the batteries here in the Philippines was a killer though.

Was sales-talked in to buying recharge cr123 and poof bye bye G2...

Fast forward to the present and while trying to find a cheaper LED Surefire P60 replacement bulb I stumble upon high powered LED and eventually into CPF and BLF.

I really got excited with the new LED's available and the potential things you can do with it!

Hope you guys will give great advise with the different DIY projects I have in mind!

Maybe a Solarforce high voltage drop-in would be a good start to give new life to your Surefire?

Welcome snakedoc. Taking the high voltage dropin advice from Vectrex would be a great way to start.

Where's the fun in that when you can build the drop-in Vectrex! Actually I'm going to place an order to Solarforce as soon as $$$ is approved by the commander in chief!

But I do want to build / mod my own P90 drop-in, just trying to learn all the ropes. I got a good idea how things should work but zero actual build experience.

Welcome on BLF! :)

Thanks Budgeteer

If you can solder, you can do it! It’s really very simple once you know what it is that you want.

Yup pretty decent with an solder JohnnyMac! I want to start small, building a P90 drop-in for my surefire then move up to car aux lights and replace a couple ancient lights a the house.

My Plan is to use the reflector of my busted P90 for my the new drop-in. Want to use a XM-L for my light but I don't know what driver to use. My battery would be the 2 CR123 rechargeable I have, two 3.7 @ 700mah

Do you own a fine solder iron and have at least a little solder experience?

Then these parts would be a nice starter kit to burn your fingers:

CREE XP-G 4B neutral

Aluminum Reflector

3V~8.4V 5W 5-Mode Driver (caution sometimes DX mixes up 3/5 mode with/without memory, there are 4 versions of this driver)

Fujik thermal glue

Multi-mode XM-L high voltage driver are rare and P60 isn't ideal to get rid of the heat that a fully driven XM-L develops. In the 1-1.5 amps league I would actually prefer an XP-G to get better throw. The neutral emitter costs a few lumen, but I gets the beam color a little closer to the incandescent bulbs that you are used to.
