Driver for an MT-G2?

I built a 2D Mag a good number of years ago using a CREE MT-G2 LED and an optic. It’s a nice flooder and runs on 2 x 26650’s. However the driver I used at the time, while it has 3 modes and no real PWM that I can detect. Steps down big time on high.

I’ve never been sure why, I suspect too much current and the driver throttles the power or something. But when I built it, there weren’t any other real options. I forget which driver it was or even were I bought it from now.

However, I’ve dug the light out recently and wouldn’t mind fitting a new driver.

Can anyone recommend one?

The emitter is ‘CREE MT-G2 Q0 5000K 6V’

Thanks.

What type of switch and what size of driver?

Stock Mag 2D mechanical switch. Any size driver that fits in the Mag’s tube would do. The current driver is at the bottom of the tube attached to the switch assembly below the head.

That’s kinda what I was hoping to do. Ordered the reflector and glass, planning to DD something (maybe with a small ballast resistor) off the D cells if I have to, but was hoping to use a boost driver for a MT-G2 as well.

Mmmmmmm, MT-G2…

Check these drivers:
FX-17A 2.2A
FX6 3A
FX6 4.5A

Ugh, the much-reviled blink-on-low to change modegroups…

Mmmmnope, think I’ll stick with DDing 3 D-cells with a 3V emitter before I go that route.

I saw a few 1-mode drivers like I had for my FX13 build. Still have, actually, as I bought a stick of 5 of ’em. Think it was a regulated output for a 3V LED, though. Eh, should still work, at least for a 3V emitter.

Lotta decent-looking 1-mode drivers on FT for XHPs, but they state an output voltage range, different from the MT-G2s, so I might roll the dice and see if they’d work.

(Oh, why 1-mode? FC switch in the Mag, so I’d be happy with sustainable on/off just like a hotwire bulb.)

Thanks, ordered the MT-G2 one.

I built one on a Purple 2D MagLite years ago and used a battery voltage indicator for a remote control helicopter coupled with a fiber optic to show through the thick MagLite tube. When it comes on it runs through a multi light check then displays voltage in one of four colors. The 1/8” diameter fiber optic is embedded in the tube just above the factory switch. When on it continuously shows the charge status.

I inset the tail cap enough to allow a pair of 32650’s to run it. Pretty sure this is using one of the original Comfychair mods with the large MOSFET (07N02?) on a Qlite driver. So yeah, built it a long time ago.

Great light, very happy my wife likes it so much. Lol

Thought update. The driver arrived.

Fitted tonight:
