Multiple LED worklight - BLF alternative out there?

I have made use of an LED light similar to this in my garage a lot!

" TerraLUX WorkStar80 LED Cordless and Rechargeable Work Light include AC and DC chargers. It is cordless as well as rechargeable and has 4 hour run time. This light is rugged and reliable having a 90 day warranty. It contains a 60 LED work light of 300 lumens and 20 LED flashlight of 100 lumens. "

I have been relatively happy with it but can't help but think that for the money I could buy (or mod) a CREE based light to give me better flood, color, brightness. I'd like to use AA batteries if possible, but would consider 18650 if the total cost of the light included $10 for the batteries.

The requirements:

- similar price (would pay a few dollars more than $35 if the performance would be better)

- has to be floody! This is a priority for working on cars.. flood over brightness everytime.

- doesn't need to have a plug in cord for recharging (but would be nice)

- weight/size isn't all that important

- runtime not all that important (a couple hours on high would be fine)

- multiple modes not required (though a high/low would be handy at times I'm sure)

Anything out there that meets the requirements out of the box? If not.. suggestions on a host/drop-in combo that would work (I am willing to do a bit of modding but not a ton)

Thanks!

well, this not really what you're asking...but I'll chime in since I want to subscribe, too

I have this

and the original SLA leaked so I took it apart and used 6AA nimh - MUCH brighter (sla was 6V...although...one of the LEDs can't hack it...the rest seem ok)

it also has a forward pointing LED so you can get a little throw with it, too. Not sure if that's a real emitter in there or not because it is a convex lens over it

good work light, i beat the heck out of it, magnet strength is OK. the tilt feature is handy. it lives in my truck

edit: i paid 15 on sale at kmart

I have a UF-H2. It is great for just about any job you need both hands for and doesn't get in the way when working under cars and the like. It seems like the battery-life is bad. But I think that's cause I use it so much.

The uf h3 is great for working on cars, the magnet is handy too. I have a similar worklight which I rarely use now.
