Sipik HK21 modded to XPG R4 5C

Modded a Sipik HK21 for a fellow BLFer.

Stock light:

  • Sipik HK21 XR-E

Parts supplied:

  • XPG R4 5C
  • Shiningbeam Perfect Regulated driver

Removed head with strap wrenches.
Glue was pretty easy to break through.
Threads were cleaned up to removal residual adhesive.

Head unscrewed.
Retaining ring unscrewed.
Pill slides out with some tapping.
Noted there was no thermal paste under emitter.
“Pressed fit” stock 5-mode driver easily pops out with screwdriver.

Driver wired.
Negative contact was a challenge since the double-PCB driver protruded a little from the pill. I soldered a negative wire and bent it for contact. I tried soldering it to the aluminum pill, but of course the soldered would not stick. I also added a solder blob to the driver + contact.

Emitter mounted with thermal paste and wired.
Retaining ring screwed back on.

Custom insulator ring. Serves to prevent short circuit against aluminum reflector and gives it optimal position for perfect focus.

The XPG requires the head to be slightly unscrewed for focusing, so a small gap was left between the head and switch assembly.

Solder blob added to battery + contact point on switch PCB. This allows use of flat top cells.

Current draw at low, medium and high settings.

1 foot beam shot against white wall at low, medium, and high settings. My camera has no manual exposure settings, so it tries to adjust automatically.

Nicely done !!

Those are the beefiest strap-wrenches I've seen in a long time.....

very nice!

could you give some details on the insulator ring?

thanks :)

Sure, it was originally a plastic ring (delrin?) from the hardware store. They have many different sizes that can be handy for making flashlight mods. I ground it down to size with a dremel.

Thanks!

Nicely done!

Is the light tint also that warm/yellowish to your eyes?

Yes it is. The member provided an XPG R4 5C1 tint which is clearly warmer than my XPG R4 5000K neutral tint. I am really liking the warmer tinted LEDs these days. Even though total about is less than 6000K tints, I "see" better at night due to better color rendering outdoors.

Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures, awesome job I love it.

Thanks very much for the positive feedback. I love doing mods!

TY for answering that. I have been "seing" the very same recently :-) Might try a really warm something soon.

Nice mod .

Got them from Lowes. It's all they had. I would prefer to have another small one to crack open smaller lights. I've been trying to get my Nitcore EZaa open to swap the cool XR-E with a neutral tint XP-G or warm XR-E. Problem is there's very little room to grip and the strap wrench keeps sliding off.
