SPAM

WE HAVE A SPAMMER ONBOARD

Yeah, and really freaking annoying! Something MUST be done!!!

Die Spammer!!! Die!!!

-Garry

panpan's gotta go now!!!! This is a bunch of BS.

I SENT A PM TO ADM. CAN ANYONE ELSE DELETE HIS POSTS?

Mr. Admin has to institute something! This is getting ridiculous! I suggest something like if 5 or more people mark a particular user's post as "Spam" (in any thread - not 5 on the same post), then the user is blocked at least until Mr. Admin can look into it.

What's the procedure now? 5 clicks on "Mark As Spam" deletes that user's one post in that thread? That just doesn't work for these nasty spammers like PanPan!

-Garry

Me too; what they said.

Yes that is the procedure. But sometimes I see 80-90 views on spam and it seems that no one clicks mark as spam. Before when the spam was shown as counter under the username, many like to mark each another that way. It seems now very few peple use the tool how it should.

I'm not advocating this - but sooner or later these jerks are going to learn the hard way when they get total DOS attacks on their own websites.

They make another website and star spamming in the name of that new website.

I don't even get this type of Spam. I mean who the heck is actually going to think, "Duh, ok, I'm going to follow this link for a Gucci handbag and buy it." Are people that stupid? I know it has something to do with search engine results (I think). Where's Raccoon City to go off on this spammer when you need him!!!

AB SO F$^@#%&$# LUTELY

Limiting the # of Posts a New Member can make would help also.

Can we put a BOUNTY on this SOB to make worthwhile for someone to go after them?

Unfortunately you are correct. Some people are that freaking stupid..

They are trying to make Google think everyone is crazy about their website. It isn't about people clicking on the links.

Limit new accounts to 3 posts per day, until Mr. Admin lifts it.

Or create a button on a person's profile named "MARK AS SPAMMER". If 5 members clicked such button all posts of the spammer is quarantined. And then subsequently deleted after confirmation by Mr. Admin.

Hey, how did you read my mind? I just sent Mr. Admin a message with the very same idea! Creepy... :O

;)

Probably need a few deputy admins in different time zones so we can keep an eye on things 24/7. I'd be happy to help out. The board has essentially been useless for the last couple of hours.

An easy way to make spam messages worthless to the spammers is adding to all member links a nofollow tag (I don't know if our forum's software supports automatically adding it to all links though). A link marked as nofollow means "don't count it" to search engines.

Another way - if supported by forum software - could be: don't display links for members with less than X messages, instead, display something like link-removed which links to "forum rules about spam" page until user reaches X legitimate messages with less than Y marked as spam messages.

Captchas could also work but robots are "smart" enough to auto submit a thousand messages in minutes and prompt user to manually enter captchas one after another (which is really fast to do for someone who types fast). And if captchas are easily readable he don't need to do even that, a "smart" robot can OCR captcha and guess it with enough accuracy to be useful.

How many threads do we need to discuss spam? I see 5 threads on page 1 about the spam/spammer. Talking about spam has itself turned into SPAM.

perhaps captcha required for new account creation? Bet that would solve any new spam accounts being made.
