delete button

Since the delete function has been disabled (which I agree with) the delete button at the bottom of each post should be removed as well (if possible).
I frequently go back in to my posts to correct typos and mean to hit “edit” and instead hit “delete”. I then get a screen that tells me that I’m not allowed to delete my post.
It would be nicer if the delete button was just removed since it no longer has any use.

just deleted a post under yours... no problem at all

Likewise. I just tried it right here, worked instantly. My post has gone forever. I haven't heard of the delete function being 'deleted'.

EDIT:

gcb, just curious, but why do you agree with this function being disabled? Think of all the comments that are posted erroneously, or in haste, even in anger. I for one would hate to lose the ability to wipe such a posting from BLF history..

There were discussions if complete threads should be deletable by the thread starter... as it would also delete all subsequent posts by other members... it was discussed on one of those threads that got out of hand with wild accusations on both sides... resulting in bans at the end.

There is no reason at all that should ever allow me to delete anyone else's posts. There is not a single reason why I should not be able to delete my own posts.

The original Mark As Spam setup was abused. Anyone could kill anyone else's posts. This was abused.

Which is why we are where we are today.

Banning has been very rarely used here for anyone other than spammers.

There have been people who weren't spamming here who I would have banned - none of whom deserved it.

Annoying me intensely is not a reason for banning anyone.

Though I can think of one (and only one) person who I'd ban in an instant. Fortunately the decision wasn't up to me.

I can think of more than one person who'd ban me here for the same sort of reasons.

But programatically sorting out the spammers from the annoying people isn't all that easy.

I wouldn't do as good a job as Mr. Admin does. Thanks again SB!

There are good reasons for not appointing other admins - go to The Other Plaice and see how DM51, Empath, et. al. "perform".

Do you want me, or anyone else to behave as those (multiple obscenities deleted) behave?

If I didn't care about this stuff I wouldn't bother posting.

I guess I just misread the message that comes up when you hit the “delete” button and assumed that it didn’t work.
My comment about agreeing with not being able to delete had more to do with not being able to delete all posts just because you started a thread.
Otherwise, there is no difference (to me) between editing and deleting. If I can’t “delete” my post I can just “edit” it.
I’m a big fan of “editing”
I didn’t say anything about “banning” so I’ll stay out of that part of this discussion.

I agree 100% with the way the system works as far as deleting posts but not threads and yeah editing your own thread or own posts makes perfect sense .

I somewhat disagree with regards to moderators .. I think they should be annonymous and should be able to have their names hidden in the list of who's online and they should just do what needs done without all the smug superior B.S. ...people rarely need a explaination about why they are acting like as****es...they know they were wrong and just mad they got caught .

If a Mod starts acting like a little Hitler then he or she loses her /his ability to be " king of the forum "

I don't think that the forum can or needs to be run by only one person ...and i don't think trying to assure that no ones feelings are hurt is the smartest course of business either ..how about the spammers feelings ? or what about the poor spammers family they need to eat too .

Don should not be a mod ..I agree .

I would like to do it for about a week MMuuuaaahhh

I agree that we need a moderator or two around here. And, I have to be honest; I wouldn't mind giving it a try but there are certainly others perhaps better suited.

I can see why Mr. Admin doesn’t want moderators in one sense and that is simply that this is still a very small forum.
At any one time there is rarely more than 25 actual registered users online.
How many moderators do you need for 25 people
If there were any moderators I think they should only be charged with dealing with spam. Mr. Admin is the most tolerant person on the board and should be the person to deal with everything else.

In a worst case scenario you already need moderation with 2 people. The problem is that 1 admin isn't enough to have a close eye on the forums at all times. 1 person has to sleep and work eventually, so for a large portion of the day it's completely unwatched/unmoderated other than by members. I am glad that BLF needs this little moderation until now and people behave nicely overall here, but it is getting worse with the spammers for example.

Was just thinking the same. A dedicated spam monitor/troubleshooter sounds like an excellent idea. Even several of them, since no-one can be available on their own 24/7. These guys would have the means to instantly close an account.

Beyond that, I really like that we're pretty much self-moderating here. Ok, easy for me to say as I don't have the work and responsibility that Mr Admin handles so efficiently, but I have to say that this is the most relaxed and user-friendly forum I've ever joined. And, as far as I know, it's the only one where you don't see occasional but intrusive reminders of the fact that your every post has been 'approved' first.

If it ain't broke..

We need Super Spam Hunters that can Delete 491 Spam Posts with 1 Click.

good points Don

Don made a point.

I do tend to criticize silently a LOT of the sites I visit. They are slow, hard to navigate and unfriendly. I keep thinking that I could do a better job running those places.

This is NOT one of them. SB is a VERY competent admin and this place is tidy and quick to adjust to new problems. But fighting SPAM is really hard...

+1 to both of you
