good flashlight for a toddler?

my girlfriend’s 4 year old son is fascinated with my flashlights. I would like to get him one of his own, since i’m not comfortable with him playing around with mine all the time lol.
I think something relatively indestructable would be good. Maybe a twistie switch would be best?? It should probably have reverse polarity protection, and use a common nimh cell like AA or AAA. li-ion compatability would be nice, but thats not a must.
Long run time and ofcourse inexpensive!

Fenix E01?

Come to think of it, in the case of a child, maybe some of the typical funnily worded warnings might actually be applicable:

;)

Maybe the 60cent HomeDepot version?

You need a clicky for a toddler, the twist are no fun to use.

+1, dont shine in eye of kid. LOL.

my kids are also fascinated with my lights, I got them some cheap 9x LED (the short stubby ones you can pick up at walmart for 3.00 per light, they take 3xAAA, and I put a piece of matte Scotch tape on the inside of the lens so it diffuses the LEDS so much it cant hurt their eyes. They aren't that bright to begin with. I would say the CHEAPEST aluminum 9xLED cheapo lights that are everywhere. they have clicky just like dads, and are aluminum just like dads. Make sure to get them black aluminum, if you get a kids color, they will quickly associate it as a toy, and still want the "real thing"

Ill even sometimes grab the kids light first, turn it on, and he will start yelling for it, and ill pretend to not want to give it to him, but of course I will, that way I can pull out the real one, do what i need with it, then we both put our lights away. Works out good for me. My boys are 2 and 4, they are both lightfreaks already!

One of those light stix ones that has a flashlight, glowstick and whistle in one would be a good starter, any big store like Walmart lowest home depot Target ect has them

That's what I gave my kids when they were small .

If you give them anything smaller , they will lose it .

They'll probably lose whatever you give 'em anyway .

Fenix TK70....

My kid loves trying to play with mine.

I think I would get a bright and colorful standard C or D light from Walmart.

Something made of plastic that they can't swallow, no glass lens to break, etc. I'm just paranoid about stuff like that.

+1!

I love this!

Kid version also must be better for some applications! Borrowing theirs on occasion is probably a smart idea. Also giving them a go to borrow yours when they need it as well. Find one they can safely borrow, of course, probably a bit brighter or bigger or flashier than theirs. Teach them responsibility and trust.

I’d buy it if it was sold by MF or KD, not by that shady bluespams site which’s shills spam BLF all the time

PLAYSKOOL made a C cell light for toddlers. Had a internal green/red filter. Best of all was the switch that when it wasn't being used it auto turned off. Batteries lasted almost forever (6 months). Since is was made by Playskool it was nearly indestructible and kid/eye safe. This link is for reference but they hold up so well there are a multitude of used ones on Ebay. I believe the newest in this series had a translucent case. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PlaySkool-Kids-Flashlight-Used-/300678115716?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4601cff184

@ jack "They'll probably lose whatever you give 'em anyway ."

Absolutely. Or break it somehow. That's why budget is a major consideration. Also long runtime (they forget to switch off). No drama to swap battery, but if littlun's light dims quickly or goes off when you're out with them they get disappointed and associate this with 'not as good as Dad's.'

@ viktori: "Kid version also must be better for some applications! Borrowing theirs on occasion is probably a smart idea."

Definitely! And don't worry if you need to fib about this. E.g, my little girl, who's five ("No! I'm Five and a half, dad!") was really happy that her torch (pink Mini Mag) is better because the batteries last longer, so hers will always be working if mine stops. I even faked this once or twice And the fact that hers is better for reading in the dark because it doesn't hurt our eyes, and her mum won't see the softer light and know that we're reading instead of trying to get off to sleep ) The other evening we were walking through the local cemetary (which is now an inner city wildlife sanctuary) looking for 'our' fox. I was quick to suggest that we use her torch because mine was too bright and would scare foxy away.

Truth is, they usually want what you've got sooner or later. Just gave daughter the 'torch' part of this light http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220894394485?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649, which I bought for its Sipik extension tube. She'd grown too fond of my G10 and this light in 1 X AA config is a close enough match. Looks like mine but cheap enough that it doesn't matter if it gets lost/broke etc. First thing she noticed was that it didn't do 'earthquake' (strobe!) So I showed her that hers was better because we could 'strobe' it ourselves with a hand in front of the lens and alter the srobe speed. My G10 could only blink at the factory setting, not nearly so useful!

I recently received a Brynite AAA PD03B to go on my keychain (very nice light, btw). Young Lady is already very fond of it, so looks like my next purhase will have to be something similar for her, maybe a Black Cat from Manafont.

I recently ordered this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390184017089?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 which, by odd coincidence, came through the door while I was typing. First impressions are that unfortunately it really is as cheap and cr@ppy as you'd expect. But, on the plus side, the functions do all seem to work. The compass is considerably off beam, but the thermometer is ok (at least, it responds to changes in temp). I'll let her review it later today and post her opinions..

I'm not sure if that one glows all of the different colors or if you randomly get a different single color flashlight from the seller, but it's possible that it does based on the description: 3 different modes: flashlight, blinking emergency signal & flashlight & glowing body (different colors)

Thanks Rez. I've emailed the seller to find out if it's the same one.

I hope it works out for you. If you get one, I know she'll love it...

Lensman,

*tips hat*

way to go, sir! :D

Got a reply from seller, he thinks this is the same model (it's certainly the same model no.) Have to wait for Paypal to be topped up first, though :\

" Hello,

The flashlight is the LG5314 model.
It does glow multicolor.
The header attached to the flashlight states that it is waterproof and floats, but does not say anything about the flashlight working, if fully immersed.

Thanks Rich"

And the Tactical Survival Multi-Tool was a huge success! Yes I know it's a bit silly, and older kids wouldn't be very impressed, but my daughter loved it. The LED torch is, at a guess, as bright as a Fauxton. It only stays on as long as the button is kept pressed, and it works perfectly. There's a little mirror and a magnifying glass, compass, thermometer and a whistle. The storage compartment is tiny, but big enough to contain iron rations (7 or 8 Tic-Tacs ). Glad I bought it, for the $ you can't really go wrong.
