Thrower mod XRE Q5 to R2 conversions with beam shots

I am on a thrower kick, so I got some XRE R2s from LCK-LED and converted a couple Q5s and made a P-60 drop in.

Visual difference is obvious no Copper ring around the emitter on the R2s.

First observation man these are much brighter than the Q5s even driven at the same amperage.

The R2s pull 2.8 amps on direct drive compared to 1.8 amps for the Q5s.

The R2s have a purplish tint compared to the Q5s greenish tint.

The Die size is bigger behind an aspherical lens and also a bigger corona on a P-60 drop in with a smooth reflector.

P-60 SMO XRE Q5 1.8amps P-60 SMO XRE R2 1.8amps

XRE R2 1amp aspherical XRE Q5 1amp aspherical

I run a Q5 on direct drive in a P-60 drop in it pulls 1.8 max. I am afraid to run these on direct drive since they pull 2.8 amps which seams ridiculously high for an XRE but the R2 even limited to 1.8 amps is much brighter than the Q5 which is nice.

Did you notice that you have an alien in your house?

Nice pics. Thanks for posting!

That’s cool, quick question , isn’t the xpg r5 brighter thrower with more spill than both xpe u used here and eat less battery at same amps?

thanks for posting, now I'm excited for mine to arrive. thanks for pointing out the seller, too. These should vastly improve a couple of my lights.

I can’t open that link?

No an XPG does not throw as well as an XPE. This has been discussed quite a bit on here before, I believe DRJones had a very descriptive answer. Basically the short answer is more light is directed forward out the front of the XPE die than any other type of emitter so it has better throw than any other emitter.

Edit: Half asleep I meant XRE every place I wrote XPE

you should try overdriven xp-c :) even smaller hotspot and more lux (but less lumens)

So which out of all emitters throw the farthest , I bought micro fire with 7 q5 with battery pack, should be here today an I am thinking about changing the LEDs to make it the brightest 7 led but I already know they make it with the r5 LEDs so that is why I easy thinking it was better , also just want it to be straight forward with no circuit problems and fitting problems;)
I may get it and be blown away however ,lol

The XR-E is going to throw the further (not XP-E) with an aspheric. The XR-E is the one with the 90 degree emitter beam angle. The XP-E is wider and therefore more effective with a reflector but not with an aspheric.
The XP-C is good if you push it hard as is done the the DEFT EDC but it’s not designed to be pushed that hard and your heatsinking has to be better than most people will be able to provide.

please post as much info as possible, especially upon inspection are far as you're willing to take it apart

Exactly. I was going to point this out until I saw you already did. The XP-E has a 115 degree beam (IIRC) where the XR-E has a 90 degree beam.

While the XP-E and XR-E use the identical die size and have similar output per bin, the larger dome allows for a flatter curve and tighter beam than the XP-E's small ringless dome.

E, are you sure you don't mean XR-E? If you are going for maximum throw the XP-E is not the way to go.

So which would u guys change the micro fire q5 's with for a badass 7 led light with very little issues other than changing the LEDs that state 900 lumens already , I was thinking the r5 because micro fire jas basically the same q5 light now with r5? Please help me decide also if e wants to check this light out and play with it I don’t mind

See the micro fire is reflector not aspheric is another reason I mentioned the r5

Yeah I meant XRE sorry I just woke up from a nap and I am still not all here

Woah, that looks awesome I honestly wouldn't change it from Q5s to R2s the difference will be negligible unless you drive it way harder. You are talking about a $40 dollar emitter upgrade plus a $15 dollar driver.

Would u change it to something else? Just make it crazy , I’m still waiting for ups to get it here , see I was thinking r5 and I wouldn’t have to change anything but the LEDs and it would be noticeably a wow factor , what do u think? U want to play with it? Lol and no worries if something goes wrong

If I did anything to it it would be switched from Q5s to R2s and driven with an 5 XML driver at ~2 amps per emitter. If the heat sinking was good and the batteries can deliver 14 amps. It would be ridiculously bright and throw like an HID.

I have a feeling this thing is going to be amazing as delivered.

I have a pretty decent backlog of lights right now and LCK-LED has been fairly slow delivering the R2s, so play with it a while and get back to me.

I'm confused. You have an EZ-900 Q5 emitter vs. the EZ-1000 R2 emitter? Going with the R2, at least if you want throw, wouldn't it have been better to go with the EZ-900 die with the copper ring (smaller die)?
