New LED Mags

I was wondering, with all the mods going on with old maglites, has anyone taken a look @ the new led maglites and have any opinions to offer on their worthiness?

Boy, that brings me back to my dirt road upbringing.

I have done some comparison beamshots with the standard 2D Mag LED and others (KD C8, Palight R5, etc. . . ). See my original beamshot thread and compare against my newer beamshot thread. The standard Mag LED is too throwy with a very very narrow beam. Spill is very very dim - not a very useful "general purpose" light to me. I did use it underground last week (new thread to come) and took photos comparing it's use to other lights. My LED Maglite is the latest version (3rd generation of LED Maglite I think). An XP-G in a Maglite is far far better.

I guess it's all in what you want - flood or throw or balance. I found the XP-G to be a pretty good balance with good runtime at only 1.4A (vs. the XM-L at 3A). Did you see my XP-G Neutral Mag beamshots here? There is a shot of the KD C8 XM-L to compare to as well as a modded 2D Mag (running 2 18650's) using DX's 52mm XM-L drop-in. That 3C Mag is also using the deeper Mag LED reflector. I was shooting for max throw without being pencil beam along with max runtime and minimum weight. Currently testing use with AA NiMh's in C adaptors and really working out well.
