Whoa... the earth just shaked

Northern Malaysia 4:40pm local time... very noticable ground movement. Somehow, it is very similar to 2004 Tsunami.

And now it's confirmed, quake magnitude 8.7-8.9 (2004 was 9.1) hit Indian Ocean again. Tsunami warning works this time, at least people nearby received proper warning to head for high ground.

I pray for the best for them, and hope everyone here do offer their prayer too.

Damn thats a big one. Hope everyone is okay.

Wow, that is a huge earthquake!

http://www.cnn.com/2012/04/11/world/asia/indonesia-earthquake/?hpt=hp_t1

They said this one is a horizontal shift, not an upward shift like the 2004 one, so not as much catastrophe should result (let us hope).

Looks like there is no significant tsunami.

New 8.2 aftershock. Only 10 miles beneath the ocean and 380 miles from Banda Aceh. Second tsunami warning in place!

Godspeed to those in the area.

Wow...I just read it on the news!
I hope nobody got/gets hurt!

scary things, those earthquakes and tsunami`s.

My facebook page is full with this news, and they even post the prediction of the next tsunami area.

Pulsar13, do you mind telling me which state are you from?

It is terrible the little info we can get in time to avoid such catastrophes, it looks like we still know nothing of earthquakes and volcanoes.

I hope nobody gets hurt this time.

Wow. Hope everyone is ok. The technology that they have to take action when something like this happens now is amazing. Seems to be a huge step ahead of 2004 when the last major one occured in that area.

Seems no tsunami so far, thank god. But I can only imagine the fear people near there are going through. Probably will be a sleepless night tonight. I really hope things don't get worse..

Yeah I think the technology is being put to good use now, much better than last time.

(BTW Bibihang, I'm from SP, Kedah.)

The 2004 quake was responsible for almost a quarter-million deaths....I can't imagine the devastation.

Sending prayers to all in the affected areas.

Wow! That's pretty friggin' big! :O

Wow I hope you and your loved ones are OK.

8.9 is the biggest I have ever experienced here in the SF bay area... 8.7-8.9 is nothing to take lightly.

If youll had a 8.9 under your feet, that must have been a very humbling experience. And I doubt many people actually were in a place where the full earthquake was experienced...

(I know from experience ;) )

Last years quake here in Japan was about the same size, but of course in Tokyo and Chiba it was less powerful.
So i wouldnt say I experienced a 9.0 magnitude, because we were far away from the epicenter...

even though it was measured about 5+ here...scary

2012 is coming...

Then you must be a couple of hundred years old; I think you got the 6.9 quake and the year it happened (1989) mixed up.

To my knowledge no earthquake over 7.9 or so has ever been measured in California

That is why the 10X bigger 8.9 is so incredible...if that happened here in San Diego, I might have oceanfront property (I live 30 miles inland).

I read that New Mexico just got a 6.5.

Very lucky that the 8.9 mag earthquake in Indonesia is a strike-slip earthquake, which is unlike the vertical thrust one in 2004 boxing day. Much less water displacement, hence the tsunamis are just 80cm peak-peak.

Compare this to the what....29.6 metres (!!) waves peak in Japan last year! Around the same mag but i think the Japanese one was 500 miles long.

Waiting for the next big one...
