hey guys, find me some components to build some underwater led's for my boat!

ok, looks like buying a commerical made set will cost me 500 bucks or more. i want to build my own for a fraction of the cost using raw materials. to give you an idea of what i want to do, i want to build a pair of lights using green led emitters on a 12v system in my boat. i plan on incapsulating the assembly in an optically clear resin housed in a machined block of aluminum stock of approx 2.5"x4"x1.5" inside dimensions. the emitters will be thermally bonded to the aluminum block for heat disipation. i've seen similarly built lights that used three emitters on a single star and had a lense on the top to magnify and direct the beam. i would like the pair to be driven at around 2 amps for the pair and produce about 1000 or more lumens if that is possible with that amp load.

thanks,

monty

I think you could do it direct drive with resistors and a switch.

1000 lumens for the pair should be easy, its only 500 lumens.

So maybe you just need to find a 12v led like the EZW that was being discussed in another thread here

I have no idea about what resistor to use but it sounds like it should be a pretty basic set up.

one led

this host (available for less on ebay)

use an sst-50 driver that will take 12V for a LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOTS of green light.

I've done this (exactly, but in red). I only need to mount the host to a clamp for easy swapping from gunwale to trolling mast

to give you an idea of how much light we're talking....here's a red pt-54 build w/ beamshots

edit: btw, i got my pt-54 w/ lenses, heatsink and peltier cooler for $15 on ebay. Usually red goes for $20. No idea on green.

I have some of these on order for some green weapon lights I am making. I will report back on them once they get here, they should be here any day. If they are decent I would go with these, but let's wait and see how good they are.

They have them in red also.
