Deal Alert: Sipik SK58 for $3.99 at FP today only

In case anyone is interested in a very small zoomie, today's deal at FP is the SK58/clone...not much of a risk at $3.99. I ordered this from them last year, and mine was Sipik branded. It's an ok light, I'm just not that into zoomies.

Link?

This is No. 5, not SK58. Somebody wrote (here:https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/342): "Even looking almost the same, the SK58 is indeed superior."

My guesstimate is SK58 outputs about four times less than SK68, power draw is about the same. Other than that, SK58 is an OK light. Better spot than SK68, without rings.

My experience with FocalPrice's SK58: https://budgetlightforum.com/t/-/1464

I changed the emitter to an XPG and it works much better now, although the driver is still very inefficient and the body is still crappy as hell.

Save your money for something else.

Personally, the SK58 is my favorite EDC zoomie.

I own a couple stock SK58s and one clone. The stocks were single-mode with an Osram Golden Dragon emitter. The clone was significantly brighter, had a Cree emitter and had 3 modes (max, 50%, strobe). All 3 of these lights were dimmer than my SK68s in their stock configuration.

Why do I like the SK58 so much?

1. It's size is great for EDC - very compact cylindrical shape without protrusions, ridges or crenelations. It feels much more comfortable in a pants pocket than a bulkier SK68. And it won't rip up a pocket like an SK68. NOTE: the tailcap on my stock SK58 was a little rough due to the knurling going right to the back edge. This is easily solved by swapping the tailcap on the SK58 with the smooth one from an SK68.

2. Nice comfortable knurling - many other compact zoomies lack knurling and can be slippery. Not so the SK58 with its comfortable square cut knurling covering most of the light.

3. Easily modded to your choice of emitter and driver. In some ways the SK58 mods even easier than the SK68. When I tried putting in a new emitter into an SK68 the limited travel of the bezel restricted my zooming. This wasn't a problem with the SK58 where I added strips of bent copper sheet to prevent the pill from screwing down completely resulting in increased travel distance when the bezel is worked. I later modded this even more by filing down some of the knurling at the base of the bezel. The result is the lens now slides nearly 12 mm and retracts very close to the emitter for an extremely wide flood, without restricting its ability to focus in any way.

the stock SK58 is pretty bad. But as a project light, the body makes an excellent EDC. In my opinion, much better than a SK68. I'm running mine on IMR 14500 with a 2.8 amp Shiningbeam driver and XM-L T6 emitter. As modded, it produces an extremely wide clean flood beam. The zoomed beam is ugly due to the reflector I added, but it works when extra range is needed.

After living in my pocket with my keys the Typ2 anodizing started to look like crap. I used Greased Lightning to strip off all the anodizing and then polished it. Looks much better now.

Additional mods I'm thinking of applying to this light:

(1) Possible emitter change to a Neutral XM-L if I can find one.

(2) Possible driver and switch change. Current driver I'm using has 5%, 20% and 100% brightness levels. I'd prefer to have an even lower minimum brightness. I'm considering trying to mod the light to use Dr.Jones' custom Nanjing 105C driver with an electronic switch. The hard part will be connecting the switch since it will require an isolated electrical path from the driver at the other end of the light.

Some options I'm considering: Use a small file to carve a channel down the inside of the battery compartment for a small insulated wire. I'd then have some kind of insulated contact connecting it to a tact switch at the rear.

Another option is to try drilling a hole through the side of the body and maybe part of the head and installing a side switch. This would make wiring easy since the side switch would be right next to the driver. The downside is I doubt there's sufficient room in the light for a side switch which means much of the switch might end up protruding out of the light. I'm leaning towards the rear switch configuration.

Nice to hear someone loves this little light ...after all my sipik bashing I have to admit this is the one I want to like the best although I don't think it is what it should be ..it's lacking in about every possible area .that said it has a gret looking shape and size .body is very thing and baked up so fast it was amazing yo sort of a brassy gold color ..certainly not as nice as the more brown sipik68.Same foul cheap clicky as the sk68...the golden dragon zooms down to a VERY tight beam that resembles a baseball diamond the beam in general is rather acceptable until we talk about the tint which is disgustingly purple (get what you pay for here ) it's really so bad it's almost unusable ..So it begs for a mod ..Add a 7$ xpg neutral and you have a light that isn't cheap anymore doesn't flood to throw like it did and yet is probably fairly usable ?(maybe ) OK it still needs a driver for 4$...so here we are at 15$~17$..

Alltogether I'd say the light looks better than it is .i think it's one that I thought might be worth modding to some degree and then realized the body just isn't there ..Maybe if there was a way to make these sipik tails better ..I think that is the weakest and hardest part to fix .

for 4 $ buy a few ...bake one for fun and maybe drop an old emitter you have lying around your desktop in one.
