I just had a low vision exam today

Hello everyone. I want to share this with the great folks here because you all did so much to help me in another post made about sponsorship for finding a cure for blindness. :) I just had a low vision exam done today which is a service done for me by the state dept for the blind. I do not have the full report in front of me as I am waiting on a faxed copy of it. Here are the main points though.

20/300 left eye (same as of 2008 but nystagmus is worse)

20/700 right eye (was 20/400 in 2008 but nystagmus is worse)

I was told to keep using my 10x prism reading glasses when needed

I will be supplied with an 8X monocular for distance which gives me a 20/200 in left eyes (was 20/70 in 2008 with a 4x monocular)

I will also be supplied with a handheld electronic magnifier. After trying several models, we picked this unit for me: http://www.optelec.com/en_US/product/electronic-low-vision/portable-video-magnifier/compact-5-hd

The folks here make me feel welcome and make me feel like you give a flip about me and my eyes, so I wanted to share this with you. I was told that all this will take about a month by the time paperwork is done, bills are paid by the state, and the items arrive. Thank you all for the help. I want you to know that even though the numbers on my eyes are not as good, I am still thankful that I can see and that I can get help. It could be worse, I am lucky.....there are those who had perfect 20/20 vision and now can not see at all. I have never known 20/20 vision and therefor have never missed it.

One of the things that scares me most is losing my vision.

I really like the way you cope with what scares me most. So please do keep on telling us how it goes.

In theory, I dislike most of what the US governments have done for the last three decades.

In practice, I've yet to meet an American I disliked (And that includes all of the TSA staff I met in New York and Pittsburgh). OK I've only met about a millionth of a percent of all Americans - but no complaints from me.

For everyone who comes from the US of A - you're great folks.

A lot better than I expected - a whole lot better.

20/300 is not all that bad in terms of nearsightedness, I had 20/400 in both eyes and wore normal glasses all my life until I had lasik done at age 50. You must have some additional complications that make correcting it difficult.

Or is 20/300 your corrected vision?

I distinctly remember not being even able to read the big "E" on top of the eyechart. But my close-up vision was incredible, now after lasik it sucks. Yeah, I am also very protective of my eyesight.

In a nutshell there has not been much they can do with my eyes because my optic nerve is called"dead". It is white when it should be pink. So my eye is ok and my brain is ok (I think) so the patch cable is bad.

Oh, wow. That is one of my greatest fears. It's like how when using my dremel I always wear safety glasses and a face shield. I wish I could say I can relate but I'm one of the few blessed with 20/15 vision. I hope your new glasses help. If there is anything we can do to help just say so.

I would like to find a brighter but affordable single AAA light. I have a Fenix LD01 that I bought used from Craigslist a while back.....it is not enough light. I have a post about it in the AAA forum.

Glad to hear you are getting help. Have you considered upgrading to an AA/14500 EDC?

I have a nice single AA/14500 light that I got from a nice fella here. I want the single AAA light because it fits perfectly in the Leatherman Wave sheath. I EDC that everyday just in case I need it. :)

You just need a holster to go with it so you can carry it.

you got a link to the leatherman wave sheath you're talking about? ( i edc the AAA light on my keychain ring )

the leatherman charge tti is being offered on ebay for ~74.90US$ shipped (FREE global shipping from the States), and i am tempted to buy it. brand-new, but comes without sheath, driver bits kit and retail packaging.
