I didn't buy this lanky light in order to mod it...rather I modded it because I had it. I bought it about a year ago, no idea why. I've been getting more into AA lights (and there aren't that many multi-AA lights out there to begin with) since I discovered Eneloops...and I remembered I had this thing propping a door open After looking it over, I wanted to give it a try...more as an experiment than anything else. This light has a seriously crappy pill, the donut type, but I had an idea...or two...and it takes 20mm drivers, and there is nearly nothing decent out there at the moment...so...

A 1/2" plumbing cap fits pretty well in the pill...but a P60 pill can be ground to fit perfectly as well:

I just spun the brass pill around using a simple 1"x30" belt sander...really any sander would do, or even a decent file. I just checked it frequently until it fit snugly in the aluminum ring, errr, pill...

I soldered a T6 and Nanjg 105C together in the brass pill (sorry for the crappy phone pics, I was lazy):

And now a little Fusik:

...and into the head it goes:

The stock reflector is a cheap plastic number...a P60 reflector is slightly larger and much more solid. I ground the larger rim of a P60 reflector down using the same belt sander, and carefully sanded the face and tail edges as well until it slid nicely into the head...much nicer than stock, and should help to draw some heat off of the emitter:

I trimmed the tailcap spring a bit in order to make up for the slightly longer pill/reflector combo...and put a GITD tailcap on as well. It doesn't tailstand...but, this thing is so tall and thin, you wouldn't want to do it anyway.

The walls on this host are very thick:

The business end, yeaah baby!

The light is very bright now and totally floody...the beam is very similar to the UF2100...which is a good thing in my book. I measured 2.81a on high, .82a on medium and .12 on low...using Eneloops. I haven't tried it with alkalines yet. If anyone is interested, I'll take some beamshots. I didn't take any stock beamshots, but just think of the average $8 light with an angry blue tint...and hi/lo/strobe. I have to say I'm very happy with the mod, it came out much better than I thought it would. It has that same kind of appeal to me that a Mag has...a long heavy solid club. In any case, it's an alternative 3xAA light for next to no $$.

I tried the light tonight with some cheapy alkalines, and I have to say I was surprised at the result...though not as bright as the Eneloops, the beam was still quite bright on high. It's always nice to have that option.

EDIT: beamshots added...I only had a few minutes to shoot these, and I used auto. The pics are fairly representative of what you see, though I'd say the Lanshi is a bit floodier than it looks in the pics...think P60 w/XM-L...that's basically what it is.

Lanshi (all pics on high)

Yezl Z1 (same as UF2100)

Xeno EO3 v3

And I had to throw in a thrower, the awesome Keygos KE-5 - the hotspot is tighter

than it looks in the pic due to overexposure

Btw, I forgot to add that the heatsinking works very well...the head heats up rather quickly on high.

Cool! Thanks for sharing. I wouldn't mind seeing a beamshot to see how floody it is. How about compared to the Yezl? I think I need (ok, want) a floody light in my collection and I like the idea of AA's.

Sounds good, I'll try to take some tonight along with the Yezl/UF2100, as well as try some alkalines.

Nice work, Dave!

Good job .

So good , in fact ...

Well he soytnly had a long light

Which apparently wasn't too bright

So he made a new pill

With hand tools and skill

Then he showed us how he made it right

Ok Jack, are you a poet by profession?

(You're going to be held to posting a limerick with every post you make now; you know that, right?)

Beamshot bump

Looks good to me . Thanks for the beamshots .
