4Sevens Maelstrom S12

I think I'm in love! Put it on my to do list.

What do you guys think? I wished they would make this with about about a 65mm head.

Nobody has any comments?

Sorry, not in the least. At that size I'd rather have a Shadow JM05 for 1/2 the price or a clone of one for almost 1/4 of the price. Another $5 for a Nanjg 105 v2 and you then have a better light and enough money for a few batteries, too.

If you want a version with a 65mm head just get the HD2010 (64mm head) for almost 1/3 the price. Add a Nanjg 105 v2 and have the perfect light with a great low and at least as good or better high and any modes you desire. That S12 is way over priced for what it is.

In all honesty I have been underwhelmed by the 47 lights I have handled. The overall heft, materials, machining and anodize finish didn't feel like a light in their respective price ranges.

I EDC a 47 AA tactical, and its a reliable tool no doubt... but it just doesn't "feel" like a $55 light. Its noticeably thinner walled and lighter weight than the (cheaper) Fenix L1T it replaced. ITP has some AA EDC lights that are built like a brick outhouse... by comparison (IMHO of course).

The Malstrom is kind of the same way. Reliable tool, but Just doesn't "feel" like a $100 light. Under-driving the SST-90 has some pros / cons too.

The one thing 47 got right however is the LOTC... Thats a clear distinction between the 47 products and most of the popular budget brands.

Had to look up LOTC:

LOtC Learning Outside the Classroom
LOTC Light of the Canyon (Methodist church; Anaheim Hills, CA)
LOTC Lock Out Tail Cap (flashlights)
LOTC Leadership Officer Training Corps
LOTC Language of the Cavemen
LOTC Loss of Throttle Control
LOTC

List of Temporary Changes

I never knew loss of throttle control was a problem with 47's lights ;)

Back on topic I have to say the S12 certainly looks sexy, and I remember wanting one really, really bad for about a week or so, but it passed, and I found other lights that (briefly) quenched my thirst.

If the price doesn't hurt you get one, let us know what it's like... but perhaps sleep over it first ;)

Well thanks for the comments. I would like to see one in person before I commit to buy one, but I know that ain't going to happen around these parts. I agree I could buy a whole lot of light for that price. I do like the looks and the shape though. I think Xtar S1 sort of copied this light in my opinion.

I have one and I like alot of things about it, but it has one problem I can't get over. The user interface is very awkward. At least for me.

It does not have a clicky.

If you slightly loosen the tail cap, it is momentary only. It cycles between high and low as you release and push the end button. It has last mode memory if you have it off for over a few seconds.

If you want it on all the time, you have to tighten the end cap, and there is no tailstanding ability.

I tried to work it into the lineup but there were always better options. It is a beautiful flashlight. I keep it on my office desk along side my Fenix TK45.

So in order to turn the light on and stay on do you have to losen the tailcap 1/2 turn and then press the clicky and hold it and then tighten the tailcap?

Yea I had a TK35 and at first I liked the shape of the light and the way it fit in your pocket sice the tube body was flat. Then I took it outside at nite and that's when I decided to trade it for a T40CS. The TK35 is not a thrower regardless of the Fenix 331 meter throw claim. Not even 200 meters in my book. Heck 200yds and it still sucked.

With the tailcap tightened all the way it is constantly on and if you want to switch modes, you need to loosen and tighten within a second or two. The button on the tailcap is not a clickie and does not come into play while using the flashlight in constant on(tailcap tightened).

When the tailcap is loosened a quarter turn, the button on the tailcap becomes a momentary button. There is no clickie at all.

The switch consists of a disk that is spring loaded and makes contact by you pushing the end button or tightening the end cap all the way.

Youre not alone. I am a HUGE fan / proponent of the original Surefire 6P twisty-cap (which also operates exactly as you describe). But its most definitely not the best UI when it comes to multi-mode flipping designs. IMHO its best when used with single mode UIs.

FWIW.... 47 is one of the companies SF is going after for US patent violations. They don't say it specifically, but I think the Malstrom S12 is one of the patent violators.

Where the SF momentary button + twisty cap is a registered US patent under the first one

But, every good flashaholic needs an sst-90 emitter. This might be a good time to get one.

The flashlight is pretty.

That shouldn't be too bad then. I could handle that.

Ya, I got a comment... Quit buying so many lights, your going to catch up quicker than I thought.... =)

I own one and think its a very sweet light. Looks awesome, has good flood and decent throw for it's size. I don't like having to rely on only 26650 batteries which arn't over common, but no biggie. I do think the UI is pretty weird, but it does ok once you get used to it.

Aloha and welcome to BLF rdrfronty!

Welcome to the club, rdrfronty!

Thanks guys.

Welcome to the group, rdrfronty!!

They have a housing diameter of 76mm and there are 7 (SEVEN) Q5 LEDs inside. Oh, it's also rechargeable, whatever that means. The only problem was that while I was waiting for 4SEVENS to give me a little bit of a shipping discount for 2, I think they might have sold them - might be just as well. I don't know what I'd do with them. Anyway, I still have time with PayPal and I wrote them to see what they intend to do.
