Cree XM-L: now in 85-CRI and 90-CRI flavours

I recently re-downloaded XM-L datasheet, and noticed that there are 6 more bins added:

Still no signs of U3 bin anywhere, though. I wonder how soon high-CRI XM-L flashlights will appear? :Р

Now this is worth getting excited for !

Great news, do they lose much brightness to the lower CRI emitters?

The T4 7B XMLs I have been getting from LCK-LED are high CRI (2800-3200K). They are very bright but have an orange look to them.

Equal color temp. != equal CRI. The T4’s are not high-CRI. :Р

Isnt 2.6/3.2 too much on the yellow side?

I'll wait for high CRI at about 4000K

It is, that's why many people (including me) prefer 92-CRI Nichia's (4500K CCT).

You spelled flavor wrong ;)

If I remember correctly, some Nichia emitters were even up to 5000-5500K and still with good CRI value. I have seen only some custom flashlights with them and do not know, if they can beeven achieved by a regular person…

Do you also spell “mum” as “mom” or “lorry” as “truck”? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

5000-5500K with good CRI would be amazing - considering CCT of sun is 5800K. No idea why people prefer to light up their homes with too red and inefficient 2700-3200K bulbs (e.g. Philips L-Prize one), instead of something proper like 5500K.. oh apparently it's "warm and moody".. :/

Those colors, warm and moody remind me mostly “hangover piss” and “tobacco-tar stained”…
Well, I quess it’s in fashion…

I might take my words back. Did a Google and I think it was McGizmo Haiku, I tried to refer. It was with 4500K Nichia LED.

LOL

Yeah Ive heard and seen beamshots with those recently made available nichia emitters and they look rather good, not too orange/red for my taste, at least in pictures.

I believe those bins are for the EZ-White LEDs rather than the standard single-die XM-L

Nope, that’s for normal XM-L.

Excellent news, thanks for the correction !

2,600-3200K is WAY too warm/amber/orange (whatever you wan t to call it). Like depleted incan batteries, will make everything look brown colored.

5000K I think most closely resembles 11:00 summer sunlight.

The goal for me is to get a nice fresh-battery-incan look. Not too yellow, and gets nice color rendering.

I did a couple triples with two neutrals and one warm and two warms and one neutral. Both have beautiful tints without being too yellow or orange.

If You want to estimate the output loss, look at the binning and labelling document. The CRI has no direct correlation with the performance, the output is defined by the output bin. The XM-L T6 (the highest neutral bin) delivers 280 Lumens at 700 mA (two watts), while the S6 (the highest high CRI bin) just delivers 182 lumen at 700 mA. This is an output loss of 40%.
