BG's BLF X6 X5 Driver with Bistro Firmware (A17DD_L)

Hi all,

I've read quite some posts related to ToyKeeper's awesome firmware(s). She's done a great job and I decided that I definitely need to add a Bistro driver to one of my Convoy S2+. That's why I created an account in your forum in order to ask some questions. I hope I found the right place. :-)

Unfortunately, I first bought the "BLF X6 X5" driver from BG (http://www.banggood.com/BLF-X6X5-Driver-ATTiny25V-Based-and-FET7135-Power-Channel-Configuration-p-1051559.html) and not the "original" from MTN. The latter is on its way but it will take a few weeks until it arrives in Germany. So I'd like to make the BG one work as well as possible until then (and I don't want to throw it away...). From what I've read, the BG driver suffers from temperature problems in the form that high temps lead to mode change problems (short/medium clicks not recognized correctly).

1) Is it correct that this problem can be improved by using a higher quality capacitor?

2) If yes, which capacity should I use? 1µF? 4.7? 10? Size should be 0805, min voltage should be 25V. Correct?

3) There are two capacitors on the driver (correct?!). Which one is to be changed -- the smaller one next to the 7135 or the bigger one next to the red wire?

4) Can I do anything else to improve the BG driver's performance? Change any other parts?

Thank you very much for any help and best regards!

If it’s a unmodded S2+ I would give the unchanged driver a try. But beware of high drain cells, newer Cree XM-L2 might pop on currents above 5 Amperes.

Hi,

Thank you for your reply. The S2+ has not been changed in any way (aside from the driver of course). So you recommend just popping in the driver and trying it?

(I wanted to avoid having to solder the driver in and out various times just to fix problems. ;-)

Best regards

The chance of messing the driver when soldering components is usually higher than when connecting it one more time.
The click times will be shorter on hot light but you might get used to it.
The BLF X6 from Banggood is not bad, it requires some changes when using it with high currents above 9 Amperes (e.g. triples).

And thanks once again. :-)

I'll try to use it unmodified then. And no, >9A is definitely not on the plate at the moment...
