BlitzWolf BW-LT5 Pro Camping Lantern Review

BlitzWolf® BW-LT5 Pro IP68 Waterproof LED Panasonic 3350mAh Powerbank Emergency Camping Lantern

The Blitzwolf LT5 Lamp/Powerbank has been a very big success with buyers with a 5 star rating according to reviews made on the Banggood item listing. The original non Pro model contains a 2600mAH internal battery whereas this new “Pro” model the subject of this review possessing a larger 3350mAH cell.

I’ll say upfront, this is an excellent camping and general purpose lamp. For a price of around $US20 delivered it represents great value for a person in the market for a lamp of this design.

First Impressions and Unboxing

The product was delivered in a small brown box. It arrived undamaged as per the photo below. Nothing too fancy here, just a simple box containing the lamp plus some accessories.

On inspecting the contents of the box we see the lamp unit contained in a plastic bag, as is the supplied USB charging cable and a lanyard.

Image below with plastic bags removed. Good to see that the items are undamaged in anyway. The lanyard inclusion is always appreciated. In this example it’s a very basic version. It could be better but is fine.

The Supplied micro USB cable is a quality product. Although only 26AWG it’s well made and durable enough to last.

Also included in the box was a warranty card and instruction booklet. A scan of the instruction booklet is included below. It comes as a small folded double sided sheet. The details are easy to read and cover really all that is needed here.

User Interface

Nothing too special here, it’s just a very basic UI. The button is firm but works well.

One click to progress modes in this order.

1.Low White

2.High White

3. Red Light

4. Red Strobe

5. Red SOS

A 1 sec plus click turns off the lamp. (thanks sixty545)

Unfortunately there is no memory mode. It’s one feature that I would really like to see on this lamp. My preferred usage is low or high white light and rare if ever use of the red modes. They are useful to have but having to cycle through these to turn the light off is a minor annoyance.

Flashlight Build and Disassembly

The quality is excellent and uses an all plastic body.

View of the Lamp unit freestanding. The case is all plastic in construction and contains a hook at the top of the unit that enables the lamp to be supported by a wall hook or some other method. The lanyard can also be attached to this hook or otherwise one of two positions included in the end section which we’ll see later. The image shows one side of the lamp where the light is emitted. Attached to the upper section of the front face is a sticker that cannot easily be removed without leaving residue behind. The sticker remaining present on the unit isn’t a concern in my opinion and has no real impact on the performance of the light.

Other side of the lamp. Each black end that plugs into the main clear plastic tube has some flat sections that prevent roll when the lamp is placed flat on a surface. The design of the plugs includes holes that enable a lanyard to be fitted. The quality of the fittings and tube are very good. All plastic but appears to be quite durable.

Below as a size reference we see the LT5 Pro beside a BLF A6. The LT5 Pro isn't small nor is it overly large at a length of 143mm.

Image below with one end cap unscrewed. To ensure that the cap is not lost there is a thin length of plastic between the cap and the end section plug. Nice little feature.

Closer view of the top section with the cap removed, all plastic construction.

View of the USB charge and charging ports. The microUSB port is used for charging the internal battery, whereas the full size USB can be used to charge other devices.

Another view of the inner section of the top cap.

Below is the top plug section.

Another angle of the same plug. The metal ring can be rotated 180 degrees

Inside view of the plug. The inner section of the green rubber switch cap is visible.

View of the switch cap.

Top section of the body with the plug removed. Here we partially see the main component of the lamp, with part of the battery, PCB and switch.

Inner section removed. It simply slides out.

Side view of the inner unit. Here we see the battery labelling, 3.6V 3400mAH 2016-10. This differs slightly from the spec of 3.7V/3350mAH, but no real concern.

Other side of the main inner section revealing some components on the PCB including the LEDs.

Main plastic body with the inner unit removed.

Light Output

The specified light output is stated as 100 Lumen. I’m unable to confirm the actual output but it appears to be around the level. The tint on the white light is at the cold end of the scale and the 5700K is likely accurate.

The LT5 has a red light mode in stable, strobe or SOS. Brightness is ok for these modes. I’m unsure of the real benefit of the Red light, possibly useful for emergency purposes for car breakdowns.

Below are some photos of the lamp with the white light on. The low white mode is very usable. I’ve been using the flashlight for around 2 weeks and I find that for almost all occasions I simply use the low light mode. The high white mode is noticeably brighter and would be needed for those very dark situations.

The image below shows the blue LED active.

Charge and Discharge Performance

Charging of the unit with a typical phone USB charger (HTC 5V/1.5A) required approximately 6 hours to complete. This test was run after the unit was unit to charge a smartphone until cutoff. Initial charging current to the LT5 Pro was seen at 0.63A.

When the LT5 Pro was used to charge a smartphone, the output current did vary. In the photo below it’s at 0.48A @ 5.13V, however in other trials with another phone (HTC Desire), the current was seen at 0.86A. Although a complete series of tests was not performed it does come across as a good power bank backup for those occasions where phone charge is low.

Overall Final Summary

The Blitzwolf LT5 Pro is an excellent overall product for the price. As a lamp it’s simple and effective. Overall I’m very impressed with its performance, design and quality. Flashlights can be used for many purposes, but there are some where a lamp of this type is just that more convenient.

For people needing a compact lamp for general purpose or outdoor use I recommend this product. The added bonus is that it can be used as a power bank to protect against those occasions when a person is in desperate need of charging their phone but does not have access to a wall charger.

As seen in many Blitzwolf products the quality is high and performance as stated.

i got this light also its good light but the driver is very stupid
if you have it in a tent and running it in low mode you have to press 3 times to turn it off

very very annoying

but appart from that a great light i wish it have a electronic switch and clicky and a clicky

I have 2 pc of its more affordable little sister BW-LT3 with 4 levels and a warning blink.
From any mode you can turn it off by pressing the button for 1 sec. You could try if that works on LT5.

I can’t believe they haven’t improved this from the previous version. The simple problems rectified, this thing would be a top seller. I reviewed the old one on a YouTube vid and pointed out the flaws then.

Maybe we need a blf version of this thing, 2cells, on/off switch and seperate e-switch for levels with hidden strobe and red but also with instant access. High CRI output from warm or neutral LEDs. Would be a great stop gap or budget option before the skyray blf lantern gets production, if it ever will.

Depending how bright the leds are, this may make a decent bicycle tail light when in red mode

This is the main thing/problem. First mod for me would be to swap the leds for warm white ones. The quality of the lit area will rise drastically.

Doesnt seem bright. Maybe the casing could be designed better to allow more light to transmit out. My AA lights are brighter with a ceiling bounce

I removed the lamp inner module and turned on the light. The difference between the brightness level is quite small, so a clear casing doesn’t appear to provide much gain.

Just tried it and it does work. Thanks for the suggestion
