XP-E2 questions

Helu, I'm an inexperienced noob with the XP-E2, so I have a few questions...

1) is the die emitting area 1mmx1mm? Or is it smaller than that?

2) I see graphs on google of the XP-E2 running up to 3A, do you guys think it can handle 3.5 or 4 with decent cooling? Maybe more?

The one I purchased is a U5 torch bin which apparently is better, but to me it just looks like the regular XP-E2 output running at 1.5A instead of the rated 1A.

I can't find any graphs on the torch version, so maybe it can handle more current than the regular?

Thanks :)

Hi Enderman, the die is indeed 1x1mm, you can find a test of the ‘Torch’ compared to regular XP-E2 via my sigline. Mind that intl-outdoor sells the XP-E2 up to R4 bin now.

The Torch gains slightly less throw from dedoming than a regular XP-E2, which may neutralise the advantage of its slightly higher output and current compared to an R4 regular XP-E2.

Hi,

here’s the direct link to djozz’s test. I wouldn’t go past 3Amp. I’d rather go with 2,5Amp, but that’s me.

Thanks, I love your tests, idk why I didn’t see it on google.
I already ordered it dedomed so if it performs better in my current setup I will keep it, otherwise it will sit in a box xD
Also, when your graph line ends, is that because you chose to stop it or did you drive the LED until it dies?

Thanks, yeah I guess I’ll stick to more reasonable numbers to keep the LED alive :stuck_out_tongue:

U5 bin??
I was happy to find R5 for just under 3 bucks each…
Have seen some S bins, but they were 16 bucks a piece….

MTN electronics is awesome

Usually I turn up the current until a led dies, but when the led refuses to die even way over the current that gives the maximum output, I call it a day. I do check then at a ‘normal’ current how bad the led is damaged from the abuse. Nichia 219C’s as an example suffer hardly from a 2 minute 10A treatment.

Yeah, until you want something sent to Europe… $$$ (€€€)

So, what will you be torturing that XP-E2 in?

Ok thanks
Also, the reason the output starts to drop is because of temperature right? Because on the cree datasheets it seems pretty linear that more current = more lumens but as the junction temp increases the output gets lower.
This is why the output starts curving down sooner when on an aluminum star rather than copper star?

If this is the case I should be able to get much higher output before it starts curving down by just keeping the LED at lower temperatures…
(phase change LED cooling? xD)

:C yeah even just sending over the border to canada is a little expensive, like shipping is usually half of my order cost, but a few bucks isn’t too bad.

I’m getting 1M cd from my aspheric flashlight but I want a bit more, preferably 1.2 or 1.3M cd at least.
Last night I tested a XP-L HI at 6 amps and got 800k cd with no wavien collar, today I will test with the wavien and see if I can get more.
I also accidentally killed one of my XP-G2s when trying to test it at 6A, I think I turned it on from cold too fast and the gold wire just popped.
Supposedly the XP-G2s can fun at 6A just fine from all the tests I see on google so hopefully I won’t kill my second XP-G2 later today.
I’ve been running them direct drive from a 4.2v lipo until now, but the LED was only drawing ~3-4A so I finally bought a 6A constant current driver from MTN.

XP-G2’s at 6A are a gamble nowadays. The oldest production when they just hit the market were fine at 6A, the newer ones have a higher Vf and often die at over 5A.

The led with largest surface brightness AFAIK at the moment is the Osram Oslon Black Flat (test again via sigline), but with its 1x1mm die it should be focussed very very well. I did not get it to work well in an aspheric lens light but some folks on TLF report great results.

Well that sucks.
I still have the old one I think, 1.25mm side length…
Either way the vf is really high and I will probably switch to XP-L hi or XP-G3 (if the E2 doesn’t work out), these two are fine at 6A.
Wish me luck! :stuck_out_tongue:

Enderman, if you’re close to the US border you should check this out.

Kinek

It’s 5 bucks US for every order but that’s cheaper than shipping to Canada and faster too.

Thanks

If you keep your orders below $100 generally the agents at the Canadian border let you through without paying taxes. Everything I’ve ordered from Mountain arrives within 3 or 4 days after they ship.

Well I just hit 1.35 Mcd with an XP-L HI + wavien

Now I’m gonna risk my other XP-G2 at 6A since I have the XP-L as backup.

Wow, what size is that lens? You got one of those Wavien brand collars?

Yeah I managed to get a collar before wavien disappeared…was not cheap :stuck_out_tongue: $70
It brought my XP-L HI from 800kcd to 13500kcd………. so yeah, over 50% improvement is huge.

I’m using a 100mm fasttech aspheric lens, which is pretty much the best option for a lens that anyone has found so far.
I have spent like $100+ on dozens of different lenses and tested them all, none could beat the 100mm fasttech lens.
Every time I see a ~4” lens I ask “could this beat my cheap $10 fasttech lens??” and then buy it xD

Do you mean this flat one?
