BLF Kronos X5 mod x6 mod faq thread tailcaplight

Had a little time to play with my toys and the result is here…

Barely visible in daylight - just perfect.
Moved the one blue led from X5 to X6 for more even and uniform look. Both originally measured 0.6mA in tail. Now 0.16mA with blue leds and 0.24mA with amber/orange leds. Original 2kOhm resistor swapped with 10kOhm (one resistor for both leds).

I received my X5 a few weeks ago directly by manker (Donation to Old-Lumnens (finished) )

I really like it in general and the lighted tailcap is pretty useful. After I used the light for about 30 minutes continuously the tailcap started to behave strange. The tailcap light is now dimmer than it was before (yes, even after recharging the battery) and it flickers sometimes. I was not able to take apart the tailcap yet, since the retaining ring sits tightly.

Do you guys have any ideas what is causing this?

I’ve had that problem before, but I’m not sure exactly how I solved it. Try reseating the switch. Also try removing the retaining ring and cleaning all contact areas.

Just measured the dimensions of the blue LED on the tailcap board of my Kronos X6 and it looks like its a 1206 size LED.

The #202 resistor looks like an 0805 size but the blue LED is much larger.

Also, the pads for the LED on the other side (for those who want to add a second LED) seem too far apart to be sized for a 0805 LED.

Can anyone confirm the LED on the Manker tailcap board is indeed a 1206 size?

The Astrolux S41 and S41S has the same boards as the X6 and X5.
0805 LEDs will fit too.

I can’t confirm that they’re definitely 1206 size, but I can confirm they’re bigger than 0805. 1206 is a reasonable guess.

But like wieselfink said, 0805s will work. Just put a decent sized blob of solder on both pads, then use a tweezer or some other small clamping device to hold the 0805 right in the middle. Touch your iron to one of the blobs and “drag” it over to the contact on the emitter. Repeat. Done.

ok, thanks guys. Will either use my 0805s or get bigger ones. I got purple 0805 LEDs but I may get bigger green ones since green is brighter to the eyes and therefore, can possibly be run at lower current values/higher resistor values.

You’re not wrong, but its not really that simple either. These different colored emitters are all have vastly different efficiencies too. My experience is that the blue ones are some of the brightest, often requiring the highest resistors in my tails. Greens are actually some of the dimmest and need more current to “keep up”. But that could just be the emitters I got.

Thank you for the info. Your post made me think twice and do some quick research on the specs out there.

After looking at different colors from various vendors, I do notice that in general, blue, green, and white LEDs tend to have the higher Vf and higher luminosity. The red, purple, and yellow tend to have lower Vf and lower luminosity.

I am looking for a higher Vf, hoping the tailcap LED will also function as a low-battery indicator.

As for green LEDs from many different vendors, I found the luminosity to vary greatly - from 50mcd up to 700mcd for the same 20mA current.

I’m sure quality varies a lot too like you said. I have bid on some green 700mcd LEDs with Vf = 3.2 - 3.4V on ebay. If I get them, I will let you know how it turns out.

Vf is a floating value rather than a fixed one. It’s simply an estimate of the voltage needed to get a standardized current through the emitter. Current will still flow at lower voltage but at reduced rate. The actual cutoff voltage could be too low for safe battery use.

If I recall correctly, the tailcap was still slightly lit up down to about 2.2V. It gets dimmer at low voltage but, by the time it’s noticeable, the battery is already lower than where a protection circuit would cut power.

IIRC, djozz tried to get tail LEDs to work as a low-voltage indicator… and it didn’t work very well. I think he had two colors with different Vf, with the idea that a change in color would indicate a low battery. I think he got it working once, but it was finicky and identical parts didn’t work the same on another light due to per-unit variance. Or something like that, anyway.

The range it runs at for tailcap use tends to be well outside what the manufacturers specify or support. Like, the spec may say 700mcd at 20mA, but in a tailcap we generally want more like 0.1mA. Behavior is rather inconsistent at such low levels. There was a guy making always-on keychain lights which ran for like two years on a couple hearing aid cells, and he had to hand-pick the LEDs to make it work. Most weren’t efficient enough or bright enough at the low current it used.

But if you don’t mind individually testing and picking components, you may be able to make it work.

If you want a voltage indicator you can add a normal diode in series with the LED eating additional 0.5-0.6V
So the parasitic drain wont drain below 2.8-3V

If the tailcap is dead its time to replace the battery

Where can I find amber LEDs to do this?

Just a heads-up, I ordered the 0805 Yellow, same sku, and received white. They do look yellow till you light one up.

My DMM will light an LED on the BEEP continuity test/audible diode check. . That also confirms polarity. Most may already know this but I stumbled on it and thought I would share.

How about those who have found reliable sources for the tailcap LEDs?
Anyone have a source for amber/yellow/orange emitters?

My solution was to order a set of ten each in different colors so I would be assured of at least getting a variety to choose from.
