Another one! When will people freaking learn?

To be honest I am not sure why people do not just err on the side of caution with something as dangerous as lithium ion batteries. I am considering opening an old laptop for the cells, but have been putting it off because I haven’t researched this extensively yet, I am way too afraid of something going wrong.

“When in doubt, don’t use it” might not always bring the best results, but at least it’s safe.

Hahahaha throw your exploding flashlight at some one? lol Their has been a few incidents with light blowing up its usually using a Ultrafire cell.

People really need to be more careful. I am not saying to not do your Sub Ohms mods but use some common sense.

Every year without fail a few of these get posted on here helps to remind us. How many incidents go unmentioned?

God forbid some one does die then lithium ion cells will be banned!

That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to say. Nobody wants to hear it.

If it gets hot, and you wanna throw it, where are you gonna toss it when people are all around? Essentially, you’re throwing a bomb at people.

I am not 100% sure how the things work, but I’ve been given a device that is used to wind a coil, and that makes me think the coil is a direct short on the cell, glows red hot and vaporizes the chemical/liquid. Bad news! And that’s in the mouth? More bad news!

But that’s just my logic and I could be wrong. I won’t do it, I won’t allow someone to do it around my kids. Simple as that.

…it’s not without reason some cells have “use only in packs” (or similar) printed on them…
…and frankly, those shrink wraps are easily damaged too…

It wouldn’t surprise me if Li Ion batteries get banned sooner or later.
Sure, you can blame the cause®s of the mishaps, but these things only happen with Li Ion cells…
Hmm… maybe with lead acid car batteries too…

I don’t know…
18220 NiMH batteries would be cool (3 of them would make 18660), or LiFePo with more capacity…

And here we’re waiting for even more Li Ion power in a 21700 package… :person_facepalming:

Yeah ok I don’t mean throw it at people (or animals ) but I sure as hell ain’t gonna keep it to my face. I mean these things don’t just explode in a second. It must get really hot before it goes boom or is it like push the button and boom?

This is indeed totally crazy.
Once the coil is hot it’ll be okay, but when cold the resistance must be extremely low. :person_facepalming:

I think in both cases with light and vaping they act as a pressure vessel and a heat sink also. Basically if you had a short in a light you wouldn’t be able to tell if the battery was getting really hot until it was to late? Most of the time batteries are not making contact with the flashlight wall all the way across. So the battery will have to be really hot before transferring the heat?
Also with lights they maybe be waterproof which will act a pressure vessel if the cell does vent and would cause an explosion and create shrapnel. I think its the pressure difference between the inside of the light and the ambient air pressure that cause the problem here.

I think the switch boot will blow out. Maybe the lens end too.

Yea they would be the first to go i guess. It also depend on the design it could be an electronic switch. Even if the glass breaks it can still explode out. This is worse case scenario.

I can tell you from personal experience that a lead acid car battery will make one hell of a bang if mistreated. Back in high school votech we had a badly mistreated battery on a cart used to jump the shop cars as needed. One day while it was charging I accidentally flipped the wrong switch on the charger and made a spark, hello small hydrogen bomb in my face. The glasses kept the acid out of my eyes thankfully but I had plastic shrapnel from the battery case embedded in my arm and my clothing was basically turned to Swiss cheese from the acid. We also found pieces of the case in every corner of the 5000 square foot shop. Much more violent than any li ion explosion that I’ve ever heard of. Scary AF as well for a 16-17 year old kid that I was at the time.

I’m shocked. Your claim is that some 30 year old guy in Idaho still had 7 teeth? Shocked. Still, wish the man the best.

You sir have just won the internet for the night. Congrats.

First of all I don’t get het whole vaping-thing.

1) If you wanna smoke……smoke! :person_facepalming:
2) “Vaping” in the bathroom? Really? I Always though vaping was not addictive…….
3) The explosion was so damaging it caused his sink to break !!!

So, this guy was standing up, the vapingthing exploded, the bathroom sink (one meter away!!) broke and his head is still attached to his torso? Really? REALLY???

This story makes little sense to me. If the explosion was so strong that it broke the sink the damage to his his head would have been much greater.
More likely he put the vapinthingy on the sink (for whaterver reason) and had his face close to it.
And why ghe f,k would you want to do that?

Dodgy story. Just my 2 cents.

Nico

He could have been sitting on the John, face a foot from the sink corner… just saying. He does say it blew up in his mouth. He was getting ready to go to work, I’m assuming he was “taking care of business” before heading out.

Rude awakening, no doubt!

Edit: The mouth piece plastic, threads strip and the metal end holding the cell fires off like a rocket? Breaking the sink, bouncing up towards the corner where the flamed path shows it’s travel? Logic many times fails to explain truth.

Smoking is getting ridiculously expensive and is said to be more harmful to health than vaping.

Well, when you vape a nicotine containing substance, itĹ› addictive just like smoking tobacco.

Yeah, that’s some strong coffee, isn’t it?
Maybe the bottom with the switch shot out and cracked the sink there.
Remember that on the other end it blew out 7 of his teeth…
That’s some force there…

I’m glad I don’t smoke

Exploding vaper just says he bought a cheap copy with fake vent holes and an airtight battery compartment

In addition with people overdischarge their cells regularely vaping with an almost depleeted cell dropping under load below 2V, the cell gets damaged over time

My dad had a fully drained lead battery in his car below front seat, he wanted to charge it at –5dC
I am glad he told me I took the battery in the house and it was partially frozen
Charging a frozen lead battery is a guranteed way to get a really big mess

Expecting people to learn is like expecting car accidents to stop happening.
Get used to it…

No one will ban cars, governments will ban lithium ion batteries
