Dumpster Dive, need cool bulb suggestions. (Lamp Completed)

That’s funny, you shortened a floor lamp into a table lamp.
Last month I lengthened a floor lamp into an antennae mast for my mother in-law.
at 94 years, she cut the cord.

What you did is the stuff I love to do. Take something and alter it for something other than what it was intended.

Here is what I did with an old floor lamp I found on the side of the road.
I removed the old socket and installed an exterior socket-stake. I drilled and tapped it so I could tighten and loosen the swivel with a thumb screw. Then I added one of those 1 - 7 socket converters from BangGood.
Adjustable worklight.

NIce.
Seen that 1-7 converter a couple times in your posts. BG… was wondering where ya got it.

Will be visiting Mom for pork and kraut tomorrow. She will be getting this light for under the kitchen sink cabinet. It’s recessed and should just be ablle to see the knob.
2 rows of WW 5630 in the thin housing. Used thermal plaster to the aluminum plate. It’s 12V DC and dimmable to off.

How is the PWM using that dimmer? I have a couple that I haven’t used yet

I believe it is a PWM dimmer, not visual to my eyes. Tried to take cell video as I slowly turned the knob. Saw some lines low, but did not flicker the video as if it was flashing.

Also powered through a wall wart so I can not say if that is part of the effect at all.

Ok. Thanks. As long as it’s not terrible it should work for me

Hey, you stole my idea

I have a battery-powered VHF/UHF Ham radio in a ‘suitcase’ type box for portable work where I need more signal than a handheld will do. I made a folding antenna from 300ohm TV lead-in inside sections of PVC pipe short enough to fit in the box, but to make a similar mast would have taken more space than I had. At the time I was building this thing, there was a recall of “dollar store” halogen floor lamps which were causing fires so everybody was throwing them out. The tube sections from those were skinny but stiff and what luck- they would just fit it my box  Plus the PVC-clad antenna was a perfect friction fit over them. A simple socket in the center of the box and now my antenna is 12 feet off the ground where it can do some good :sunglasses:

Re-purposing things is a most excellent way to achieve goals without spending lots of money which leaves you a bigger flashlight budget :money_mouth_face:

Phil

I threw that exact light out last year.

Yeah, those old Halogen Torchiere Floor Lamps are useful for lots of projects. Here is my remaining stock of lamp parts.

Most of the ones I come across have 3 sections of tubing that screw into each other for the proper height. It is possible to “lego” more or fewer sections together for whatever use intended.
For instance, use only 2 of the sections with the weighted lamp base and you can use it for a small speaker stand. I simply added a 4th for my mother in-laws indoor TV antenna.

have a shortened stained glass torchier lamp in the living room, sitting on top of my HSU Subwoofer. Was 3 sections now two. Perfect height as I can just reach the 3-way SW from my chair.
The OP 5 flexi light had 4 sections, now 2 on the dresser. Cut off the plug end and installed a removable replacement plug end. Can easily pull the cord through to make it whatever it needs to be now. Never had a nice bright light in there. 3 bulbs lighted is still better light and can still have all 5 lighted as needed. The Warm COBS aren’t too bad, not eye killers without globes.

Installed the 5630 WW Dimmable Cabinet light for Mom after dinner today. Perfect light for the area over the sink and counters aside. Her cielings are 10ft high and the kitchen light is a 12 inch round flourescent inside a globe ant it’s too close to the cabinets. Counter tops were shaded more than lighted.

Also picked up a tub of those 10 rough service plastic COB under glass bulbs from HD on my way to dinner. Very nice lights. Put 3 in Moms bath over the sink and same for my bathroom, 3 over the sink. They measure out to 5.5W after a couple minutes on. Just put 3 more into my ceiling fan in the dining area (work bench). Definitely going to get another bucket of 10 for $9.90

Evolving again. Bought some old style ST64 shape COB LED bulbs off ebay pretty cheap. Only got 4 though in WW, 2X of 6W and 2X of 8W. Looks sweet. Just found the cages in Home Depot of all places. And best price I have seen @ $5ea. This is the Final Evolution of the light.

And yet another light that was out for trash. Needed a switch socket and I had one… Tucked in the corner and hard to reach, this one is on a remote control activated outlet.

Heresy!

Here is how I made and indoor antenna mast out of an old floor lamp.
Cord cutter, no cable access for my mother inlaw! FREE TV, amazing.
The antenna is turned for the best reception, she must have turned it to optimize the reception for the Dr. OZ show.

It’s a 4 gang UHF antenna that also works well enough for the 2 local VHF stations.

:+1:

Man I have been singing the praises of remote control outlets to my friends for years!
I have one on every lamp in my living room and have employed them for things like Christmas lights and other special uses. There is a certain awe and sense of command when I turn off my tv at night and with the same remote turn my lights out one by one without moving about. I highly recommend this to everyone especially for lamps in the main room.
I have used THESE for years and they are awesome for the price. Wide IR receiving range even works non line-of sight, bounced off the wall, etc.

If you don’t have a remote control outlet you really should grab a few!

Yeah me too! I got all my remotes connected to my Tellstick so now i can control them with my phone, i also tried to solder the remotes to other kind of buttons on old stuff, it works and looks cool

Hope i dont intrude on this thread by showing some of my light work.

This is an old fire extinguisher, its an Edison style lamp so it worked much better when a dimmer.

And this is my prototype led work light with two cheap led strips from ebay, it worked better than i expected:

No intrusion, welcome other creations.

edit: oops, just realised I posted this light earlier.

This is another LED strip light I made for under cabinet. Dimmer control all the way to off. Just a basic 10mm wide aluminum housing strip, but there are 2 rows of slim 5630 Warm LEDs. Compact yet bright. Scored the roll of 5mm 5630 on ebay auction for cheap and they sell for about $25. I believe I was under $5 on the score of the 5M roll. Dimmer was about $2. Hides well in the recess under a cabinet. Oh, and 12V 2A wall wart for about $2 also. Put it all on a 1.5in wide aluminum plate to absorb the heat and easy mounting.

Bought a set of 5 remote outlets with 2 IR remotes off Amazon for $30. 120V @10A each.
Only used one behind the entertainment center for the Onkyo receiver, 55in 4K LED and home theater Computer. TV and receiver will automatically turn on if they were already on when power is killed. For the PC I set the bios to reboot after AC power restored, so it turns on and boots up with the TV and receiver with one button press on remote.

Here is a pic and link to the remote set I purchased.

I waited a couple years till they evolved a bit and started getting good reviews. I am happy with my set. Each outlet is already numbered and programmed to remote. However it is possible to ad another outlet to same button to have multiple items switch on at the same time. You can have multiple buttons for one outlet… many possibilities. There is also a way to completely erase the outlet programming to start over. IR signal is strong and I have not had any trouble with hidden outlets or distance.

There is one issue I have found so far. I tried to use a remote outlet on wall outlet that is controlled by a wall switch. If you turn off the switch the remote outlet will not kick on with out the remote button pressed. Remote outlet will not energise and return to previous state, On. Not good for entering a dark home or room with main light on a switched outlet.

For years and years I was one to always keep a computer on and running. Bought a outlet type watt meter to get an idea of what things were drawing power. Certainly learned a lot. Onkyo receiver was pulling 60 watts OFF! and 120W ON. PC another 120W ON, Plasma TV was 370 watts ON! and that is my main TV and computer monitor. Found a couple wall warts in house that were pulling 2W with no device connected or off. That meter turned me into an Energy Miser. All the remaining CFL bulbs were retired and replaces with LEDs. Yes I actually moved the Beautiful Plasma TV to the bedroom and replaced it with a Bigger 4K LED TV. Onkyo gets power disconnected whenever it is not used. Wall warts replaced with equal value sensing type that draw practically nothing with device off. Really learned a lot and have dropped the electric bill by $25 per month. And that is more than 25% off my bill. New TV will be paid for in about 15 months.

Originally to get the Home Theater shut down I had an outlet strip with a switch to get it done. Unsightly and still inconvenient, I finally got the remote outlet set. With the HTPC set to boot automatically and running an SSD. I am looking at a screen in 15 seconds with one press of a button. Computer does everything and I have not had Cable in 10 years since I have integrated a PC to my Home Theater. There are ways to get and watch anything and everything for free on the internet. I have had Netflix since its beginning with just rentals and really considering cutting that off too.

perfect placement to employ a strongarm rotator.

vw, I ordered some of what I thought were the sockets you got. I thought it would be a good idea to have some on hand for future mods,
But those sockets you ordered are not the same crap I got. First of all, 3 were broken while being shipped, and the rest are totally unusable. There is no threaded hole in the base to screw in a threaded tube so that they can be mounted and still be able to pass wires through the threaded tube!
It’s seems every time I order something, sight unseen, I regret it.

No way to mount this. There is a knock out, but no threaded hole.

Here is a blowup of yours, it looks like they are of much better quality.

I just bought a set of these. Very pleased with the performance!

Actually, the set I got is the “new” version. I emailed the company and they said they’re basically identical inside, but the outlets have a slightly refreshed case and larger switch. The remotes now say ‘Etekcity’ rather than ‘ZAP’ but are otherwise identical.

The new version is even a dollar cheaper, and they’re compatible with the previous version.

dchomak;
Here is a link to the sockets I bought @ $1.43ea and no switch

I am happy with them and they have the threaded end used in most lamp assemblies. With a locking set screw too. The same socket is available with switch.
