Review: Astrolux S1 3D Flashlight

I have one of these (blue ano 18350 S1 3D) as my ECD for the last few weeks. Running it on a Keepower 18350 IMR. I really like this light so far. I run it on 4 modes with no memory so it always starts on low. The tint is so nice on this light I dont want to use any of my older lights. I ordered an SMO reflector for it to maybe help it throw a little more. (still waiting so I cannot comment if it helps yet)

I was considering the OTR M3, DQG Tiny IV and Convoy S2+ shorty.

My only issue was that I couldn’t stand the clip that it comes with. I replaced it with the Convoy style clip (BG item #1029484). Even that took a bit of bending and sanding to get it closer to my liking. I used a small file on the Convoy clip to smooth out the edges and that helped. The clip that comes with the light is way too tight at the top to fit over anything other than some very thin material. It also sticks out from the light where it clips on the body, which even thought they put a “ramp” there it still wanted to tear my jeans apart. I just know the clip can be better that these two.

My previous EDC was an Ultrafire A40B. That had such a smooth clip on it. I plan to get my hands on some piano wire and see if I can bend a similar type of clip for the S1. My biggest issue would be how to attach it, but I have some ideas.

I just received a blue Astrolux S1 18350 XP-L 3D tint (With Toykeeper firmware and DD driver) from the BangGood USA warehouse. I AM blown away with this light. I have a lot of very nice lights, all much more expensive than this little econo gem, and still I am so impressed with this light. The turbo output is incredibly bright. This is essentially a high-dollar custom light at a steal of a price.

I love the beam, as the hot spot is relatively large with a clean transition to a nice wide and bright spill. Though it's not exactly a "thrower", it is quite capable of good throw on turbo.

Feeding mine with an AW IMR 18350 cell, which can provide 12A continuous current and this thing turns night into day. You definitely want a high current cell to drive this light, otherwise you're really missing out on a stunningly intense turbo output.

I'm so glad that I got the 3D tint; which is so beautifully warm/neutral. I'm thrilled. This light puts most other more expensive single cell lights to shame. Output, beam, tint, low voltage protection, mode memory, 4- or 7-output level modes. Fantastic.

I prefer running the 4-mode with Memory mode ON and am very thrilled with this pocket rocket.

Not using the clip, but I do use a custom lanyard.

I also have the 18650/18350 Astrolux combo S1 and a red Astrolux S1 18350 version in bound from BG's China warehouse, as well. I will drive the 18650 version with a Sony VTC6 high current (20A) cell.

We are living in the golden age of flashlights right now! HUGE THANKS to you folks here who were responsible for getting Astrolux to produce the S1 with these particular specifications. Every flashlight lover should have at least ONE of these! Amazing light.

You’ll find some YouTube’s review with a guide on how to change modes

Hi, can I know where you bought it from? I bought the S2+ SMO reflector from Simon when I ordered the clear C8, but it hasn’t arrived yet. Hope it’ll fit.

Just received (Banggood) the Astrolux S1 Combo (18650 & 18350) in black. And a Red Astrolux S1 18350 joins my Blue Astrolux S1 18350. All have the A6 firmware and Wight driver. All of mine are XP-L with 3D color temp.

I’m running a VTC6 20amp cell in the 18650 tube and AW IMR 18350 800 mAh 12 amp cells in the 18350 tubes. The performance of the AW 18350 12amp cells is fantastic-equal output level on turbo as when running with the 20A VTC6. Great results with these cells! At $25 for the 18350 versions or $29 for the combo versions, these lights are a steal.

I receive mine this week in blue and a 3d tint, this is crazy cool stuff but I don’t like the clip !

I ordered one recently and have been using it for about a month. I really like this light and wished I bought one sooner. It’s a bit too long for pocket carry, but it has a permanent place in my laptop bag. I just ordered some Efest 18350 V1 IMR 800mAh batteries and if they last a decent amount of time, I may permanently use the shorter tube and leave the NCR18650GA batteries for my other lights.

I like the seven modes and can quickly and easily get to a usable level for any task. The beam is great. Large hotspot and floody beam are just what I like. Neutral white looks very good too.

I agree about the clip being not so great. I’ve got to take the tips to my grinder as they stick out way too far. I’ve got an inexpensive sheath for it from BangGood so it’s not an issue most of the time. I keep the clip on in case I need to quickly clip it to a pocket, but it lives in the sheath most of the time.

I doubt I’ll mod it in any way other than the clip. It’s bright enough for me. It’s floody but throws as far as I’d want it to for my aging eyes. I’m glad that I got it over a Convoy S2. I wasn’t sure which model S2 to get, but don’t have to compromise because I can get this one as bright as the most powerful S2+ but still have a wide variety of steps to suit any situation I’m likely to be in.

I also bought that same part from Simon on Aliexpress. I placed the order on 11/26/2016, still waiting for it. It looks like it should fit.

Guys for a week ive been watching a lot of youtube video of the Olight s1r turboS wish I bought tonight, I also have this astrolux s1 3D and im asking wish one is better , off course by specs the astrolux should beat the olight but dont know why I had to buy the Olight anyway !

Hi, just recently received mine and the emitter and the driver looks exactly like yours. I was under the assumption that a XP-L HI doesn’t have such a domed led? Compare with my C8 clear an the LED is larger and more flat on the C8 compared to the S1?

Could it be that BG sold you fake CREE ?

Oh, really...

Is that why you ruded me, twice?

You are rude. Don’t cry too hard about it

Yeah, I'm really crying hard about your deliberate misuse of the Rude! button...

Has anyone ever done runtimes for the various levels? I know that it depends on the battery, but just as a general guideline…

This light really punch quite a lot so with a regular cell you can expect about 60 mins of good runtimes

Good deal, do you have a 18650 version

My astrolux S1 came with the white unmarked star. The LED is really tiny compared to my fake lattice brights.

Is this LED legit? The driver says alex wells but the star does not. It is copper though.

they run out of DTP star:P
it’s XP hd led, so the footprint is smaller than XM-l2 led, same size as XP-g2

So I shouldn’t worry then? I got the brown box and it says “test” in the bar code.
