Historical Economics of Lighting

I’ve just read a BBC web article about the economics of lighting throughout human history, which I found quite interesting:

thanks! nice read

Fascinating, i always wondered at the light output of a candle, though i assume 13 lumens is not gospel
My unanswered question is how many lumens per watt is it?

I would be interested in an efficiency comparison, a wood fire compared to a 100lm/w LED bulb.

I’ve read before that a candle burning is about 80W. Based on the 13 lumens number, we can estimate .1625 lumens per watt.

You are correct, thank you

Great article.

Thanks for the link

I’m glad you enjoyed it

I’ve just been reading Bort’s Wikipedia candle link and wandering off along the links it gives, so thank you in turn! I had no idea there were so many ins and outs surrounding something as seemingly simple as a candle…

thanks, i never knew i would be reading about candles till this thread came along

@ Phlogiston,

Many Thanks for the link.

Interesting article.

I make “Melt and Pour” jar candles and add scents to them as a hobby, so appreciate how time consuming it can be even with modern methods and materials!

Thankfully we have LED’s for light!

Cheers,

Cool! I enjoyed that, thanks.

Highly illuminating. Thanks for the share.

Nice read! Actually, I replaced all old bulbs at my home with LED light bulbs. It cost me much less on electricity bill last year.
I hope LED lights could make further progress to save energy and cost.
