4*AA lantern upgrade

So I bought this 4*AA Lantern which puts 6V into the driver. Runtime and colour isn’t great although it is pretty well diffused. It lights up ok on a single 18650 although I haven’t tried to feed it 2*18650 in series.

As far as I can tell, the chip is an XP G2. I’m unsure of what to upgrade to. I want a warmer colour so suggestions welcome. Also can anyone look to see if the driver output can be boosted with resistors.
The modes are High,low and flashing. Not too keen on the flashing. I have some LD-2 drivers on hand.

Or get a more powerful XPL HD V6-3D or triple Nichia 219

I have the Defiant version of that lantern. So that’s what they look like on the inside…. :open_mouth:

This was bought in a supermarket called Tesco’s. Can you post a pic of the defiant one please?

Would changing the 100 resistor next to R3, the one that goes to L- boost the output?

There are 6 100 ohm and three 8.2 ohm resistors in parallel forming one resistor on the negative diodes lead
Switched with Q1 to battery ground

So it is running with about 2.5Ohm total resistance for current limitation

Sure thing. Here is a photo I took for size comparison with comparable 3AA and 4AA lanterns for a discussion we were having on CPF.

They were selling these at Home Depot late last year (probably still are) here in the States, including a set of alkaleaks. They also come in blue, orange and pink. Someone is obviously making these and branding them for whoever the customer is, because I’ve also seen them being sold on Amazon by EverBrite. There’s also a 3AAA version apparently.

Incidentally, did you have a bitch of a time getting the battery cover off of yours? Because I did. :person_facepalming:

All my lanterns i mod, usually with a warmer tint LED (and higher CRI) better driver or a modded resistor set up for better balanced modes, runtimes, and output. many of the larger lanterns i have modded to four-18650s in parallel using a 2-7135 or a 3-7135 driver Q-lite for nice modes & run times.

Funny you mention the battery cover. I opened the box while in the store and could not open the battery cover so I swapped it for another. The last time I was there, they were priced at £8.50 iirc, bought mine for £12.

My thoughts were TP5000 charging circuit, single 18650 and upgraded driver and chip. I only have LD-2 on hand for now and space is at a premium. The TP-5000 should fit below the handle opposite the switch but I have yet to buy one and would have to see how wire lengths/presumed voltage drop would affect the charging if the battery was placed in the base some how.
Life has snuck up and bit me on the rear so this is low priority for now but thanks for the input, very much appreciated.
