Utorch 1x AA 500+ Lumen Review

Sure, no prob. that could be a sign of a defective switch… there are a lot of members whose lights have faulty / inconsistent switches. I got lucky and won the switch lotto on my lights. Good Luck!! Its a great EDC light if you get a good one.

I have prevented scratching when installing clips by using snap ring pliers. Just spread the clip wide enough (by inserting pliers tips in center ring of clip) to start clip on, remove pliers, then nudge clip with thumb. Goes on with out a hitch. To remove, insert snap ring pliers at clips end openings, pry gently apart and nudge off. No scratches. I’m using the straight attatchments on my snap ring pliers at the moment.

Regarding protected 14500
Nitecore 750 could work. Or you lay a copper wire in the tailcap to bridge the lock out of long batteries.

(I can’t test this, because I got a dead lamp)

I really like mine (NW verison), I reprogrammed the modes to the way I like it and am running it on lowest to see how long it will go. So far 75 hours of continuous running on Duracell rechargeable (eneloop) and its still going. Very small and is convenient for carrying in your pocket, no visible PWM also sold me on it

I’ve ordered one of these on impulse. But now I see there are issues with the battery size. I thought it was too good to be true.

Can anyone say, if there are any PROTECTED Li-ion cells which fit this torch (without modification).

Alternatively are there any safe-chemistry 14500 cells which both work and fit, again without modification?

Thanks

I posted what I’ve collected about protected cells here Review : Utorch UT01 Flashlight (XP-L V6 / AA & 14500 / e-switch) - #180 by joechina

A Xstar should work

Thanks joechina

The candlepowerfoums review for the Xtar 800mAh “Black” states its length to be 51.0mm.

The manufacturer’s specification states 50.5 +/- 0.5mm

So it does seem to be a_ little _shorter than other protected cells (from what I have seen they are typically 51.5mm)

All I need to do now is find a UK supplier.

Protected 14500’s are an interesting beast. I’d rather have a shorter cell with slightly less capacity, but which fits universally, than this type of dilemma. It seems like laziness on the part of battery manufacturers.

Another think that needs to be noted if trying to use protected cells in this light is they need to be capable of at least a 2 amp discharge. For example the Olight protected cells are only rated at 1500ma discharge so even if they would fit, it’s a bad idea.

The candlepowerforums review implies XTAR 14500 Black are capable of discharging at 2.0 amps.

If I am interpreting the plots correctly, the protection kicks in at approx. 2.7-2.8 amps (question: will there be enough head room for transients?)

The run time until shut down is about 20 minutes.

I guessed the runtime at 9 minutes on high for the lamp.
On review stated a UT01/Manker switches to low at 3.3V. So we have 0.3Ah if we draw 2A

0.3Ah / 2A * 60min/h = 9min

And there is a 2 minute step down in the UT01

I guess yes, people said Xtars are as good as IMRs and nobody said it triggered the protection.

Nice review! Ordered 2 each 6500K. Thanks for the code!

Interpolating in the XTAR battery plots, I estimate the runtime about an hour on medium (0.6A). Maybe a few minutes more.

I’ve never read about a battery check . Can you tell us more please?

Sure…
Just quickly double-tap it from either ON or OFF.
It will strobe, but just single tap past Strobe, sos, beacon, turbo-without step down… the next mode is the battery indicator mode. (IIRC one tap past that is the programming mode). Battery indicator mode will flash to indicate the battery charge level. Double tap back out to go back to the regular modes.

Thanks! Verry interesting.

I googled IIRC, gues you mean sth. else: International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) - IAS Plus

IIRC means If I Remember Correctly.

So i recieved mine 10 days ago and the button it now completely dead, I’ve tried centring the rubber button , using switch cleaner on the micro switch below and no go. It got progessively worse first missing a press ever now or them until the current state where it nearly impossible to turn on. I’m asking gearbest for a refund, lets see how that works out. I’m very disappointed because if it wasnt for the poor electronics its an excellent light.

Mine came this weekend, only 8 days from China to north-west England (still waiting for 14500 Xtar cells ordered from UK supplier).

Using AA NiMH cell, seems to work perfectly. No switch or clip problems.

Extremely bright on full, even with this battery. The visual perception of its brightness is about the same as my 560 lumen Lumintop.

I got the 5000K tint, this is quite yellowy on the lower settings.

The button placement is entirely unprotected, so it will be easy for it to be activated in your pocket. On the plus side it always starts in lowest mode. I have mounted the clip so that I can turn it to cover the button, this seems to work well.

The lowest setting is considerably above Moonlight I would say. Maybe I’m on HI (LO) - I am going to try and re-programme it.
