Its an electronic switch so iām not sure it would be good for storing for emergencies for the folks, but the size and lumens would be perfect. I canāt teach them to remove the batteries when not in use, iāve tried.
I agree the tags are unreliable, its the same here, about 75% of the time they are accurate, the other 25% it can be lower or sometimes higher (our clearance prices are updated by some computer and do sometimes go up, which is well known among the associates).
$5.04 is a good price, are you waiting for a better price or is it just not a light you need?

Yesterday I bought 18 of these tool bags.
There are 10 to a flat. After I bought those 18 and off loaded them into my car, I came back in and the rest were GONE. I should have bought more on the first trip because this morning I texted 3 friends with the picture and asked how many they wanted.

This upright compressor, originally 199, then 142, now $95.04
I missed out on this 2 pack of folding utility knives.
This last one I am hoping to catch at the ā2ā price. The 3 pack of Duracell lights ring up for $10.04, but are not priced at the display.
They may survive to the price of $5.52.
The 2 pack of āCā cell MagLites ring up for $13.04, but are still priced at $19.00 at the display.
I still continue to be amazed by the pictures of clearance racks at other stores. Mine look like they have been rode hard and put up wet. Most of the stuff that hits our racks are ragged and dumpy. There are much fewer items usually. I think it is reflective of the conditions and economy in the area surrounding the store. I can take heart that we have been developing a couple inland ports here in South Carolina and will expect more manufacturing to move into the state to take advantage of lower transportation costs. I imagine our HD's clearance racks will start looking more like yours in time.
Friday morning, I did get one of those Husky Tool Walls for $3.33 and some weed wacker line for a penny. The weed wacker line was green in a clear and black plastic container. Was .8" diameter, iirc. Named Silentwist. It was marked $3.83 $2.83 and dated something like 11/10/16.
EDIT: Sorry folks. I misreported the marked price. These rang up at a penny at the Harbison Blvd store in Columbia, SC.

Here is how it went.
Knowing that this particular ECHO brand SilentTwist went to a penny, today when I went to Home Depot, I made a bee line to the gardening section looking for string trimmer line.
Here is what I saw.
Where the ECHO branded Green trimmer string used to be is now āRhno-Tuffā. Same Green string and .080ā
BUT, in the back, laying horizontally on top of the Rino-Tuffs, I spotted on of the ECHOās 
The Blue arrow points to it.
Now on the floor, comparing it to itās replacement, the Rino-Tuff
Now, this was in the garden section. As I went up to the registers, I came upon a Clearance endcap and saw this tray of more of the ECHOās at $2.99!
I grabbed a couple and intended to check out with them also, but when I double checked them to make sure that the UPC codes would be identical (donāt want a nasty surprise when checking out), it became apparent that the $2.99 sticker was purposefully placed over the original UPC code.
My Home Depot decided that they would try a little longer trying to get rid of the remaining stock. They used to be on clearance at $2.83, now instead of pulling them and marking them at a penny, they decided to sell them at a price of $2.99.
I put the 2 priced at $2.99 back and checked out with the one I found in garden, And yes, it was a penny.

Interesting. They overrode the products price by putting the sticker on the UPC. I haven't seen that happen before.
Yep, the one I found in garden was overlooked. Fair game as far as I am concerned.
Pulling the $2.99 stickers off would be a no - no. In fact I am sure it would be illegal.
As a matter of fact, a couple of months ago I reported on the OdorBan gallon jug and aerosol can combo that went on clearance at $2.53.
I found out by accident, that even though the price was $2.53, if the UPC code on the separately included aerosol can was scanned instead of the UPC code for the combo, it would ring up for a penny.
The self checkout price checker came up with an item recall with the penny price. That too, would be illegal, Iām sure.
I never mentioned it at the time so as not to tempt anyone.

And speaking of recalls.
A month or so ago I found one of these Ridgid portable work supports on clearance at $7.53.
That 1 was the only one I ever saw. Never saw another.
The problem was though, and I didnāt realize it at the time I bought it, was that it was missing the adjustment hardware.
Just the other day, I finally found another. And I knew it would ring up at a penny.
Here are the pieces I was lacking.
and they are used to adjust the height of the support surface.
Those parts are too hard to make, so up until now I was out of luck.
But when I checked out at self service, an extended warranty notice popped up which required input from the cashier. When she saw a penny, she told me she would sell it to me for that but she had to call the tool guy. When she got off the phone she told me it was against the law, these were recalled.
(We have heard this excuse before)
So I brought the unit over to him and told him about my previous purchase and the parts I lacked. He told me I could have anything I wanted off the penny one, he just couldnāt sell it to me. That suited me just fine.
Then he explained that they really were recalled, as people were sitting on them as though it were a chair. The top swivels and the height adjustment could let go and they were dangerous.
So the whole ordeal was a win-win. I got the parts I needed, and HD didnāt have to refund me for the one I paid $7.53 for.
My only regret was that there were 3 more on the shelf

2 days ago I happened to notice these stickers.
I looked, but I couldnāt find a single one of these items at this store, but I did some at another.
I know these are tagged at $5.04, but they rang up for $2.52. Metric Allen, SAE Allen and Torx

Even though they were marked at $2.54
This screwdriver set was $3.82. Best part of this set is that there are NO Torx bits!

All these and more I scored because I noticed the price tags on the cart at another store. This store for the most part had not yet changed the price tags, so they had not yet been scooped up.
So yesterday I scored a razorback shovel for $7.53 marked down from. $34. It was actually tucked away out of sight in the clearance area. And only noticed by my 4 year old because he gets into everything!
On my way out I heard a little grumbling between 2 employees that, āhe got that last shovelā
Seeing these shovels were not there last week when I took those pictures I can only guess that they may have been stashed away for a while so employees could snag them at the price drop.
Great deal! I saw those too, but I got a couple last year at that great price.
I actually was in one store that had all 4 of those tools at the ā3ā price.
Right next to this display was a display for metal tined rakes for $3.33 I was with a friend and we bought them all.
Going up to the registers, we thought he had just scored a great deal. Turns out the guy in line in front of us did MUCH better!!!

Home Depot had pennied these 2 rolls out. Rather than throw them in the dumpster, taking up valuable dumpster space, they decided to sell each at 1 cent per square yard!
So he ended up paying 30 cents, + tax

Ok. In getting a bit frustrated. Iāve ask a number of times how to do this but to no avail. I am officially the āgoofā who rings up the whole store at self checkout without buying a thing. I mean, ive tried everying thing! My store has items dated from last July, august, selfā¦ and no discount any different than the orange sticker price.
And what in the world is the 2 price or 6 price or 99 priceā¦ idk?! This is nuts. I guess I am done and will quit reading this thread as it just makes me angry! I think maybe you guys are part of an out of control joke, laughing at everyone who gives this a try. (Iāve been involved in college humor before)
No, I do believe that you are getting deals but I still donāt get it or my store is an exception to the rule?

It is true, some stores are harder to score in than others. Also some stores may be easier, then for some reason will have long spells where it is more difficult.
This is a very long thread and the fundamentals have been explained many times. Perhaps if you do a search on the internet for āHome Depot pennyā you will get some information that you can use.
Another example on how to score a penny deal.
Today while walking thru my store, my caught this display. All of these knives are not were they would normally be,an employee hung some on a post next to the flashlights. For some reason, flashlights and knives seem to go togehter.
What I noticed was that there were 3 double packs of knives mixed in with the 1 knife and blade set. That knife and blade set currently goes for $7.88. The 2 packages look very similar at first sight. The double set just turned to the ā2ā price as I mentioned in an earlier post. I knew that cause I spied the price change stickers a couple of days ago at another HD. I even was able to score 1.
So I grabbed all 3, because a 2 pack for $2.52 is a great deal. Just to make sure though, I price checked before I bought themā¦ā¦ā¦
And BIG surprise!!!
They scanned for a penny.

All I can say is, learn the fundamentals, after that it is a combination of hard work, perseverance, and a little luck.
BTW, I know how it can feel. I felt that yesterday when I was behind the guy getting 30 yards of carpeting for 30 cents :confounded:
Donāt feel bad, a HUGE part of it is how the store is run. Another large part is how often you are in the store and how good your memory is, then throw in a pretty healthy serving of good luck. The only thing left is skill. :laughing:
The HD closer to my home has still been selling the energizer lanterns for full price when my work HD has 20 of them on the clearance rack for less than $5.
The 2, 3, 6 price is the penny digit of the price. It encodes where on the path from FULL price to PENNY price the item is. Usually.
Iāve been watching the eight pistol safes that showed up in my work HD clearance rack a month ago. [edit]I just pulled up the pic I took on my phone March 1, $46.0 6, so it was the ā6ā price and the date of the markdown was 1/4/17 so it should have been halving to $23.03 (I think) soon.[/edit] There were 6 of them left Thursday or Friday last week, I went in today expecting/hoping them to be there with a new price - GONE, all of them. What determines wether or not they will scan for less than the sticker price? So ā6ā is the price break just before turning to a penny?
Keep in mind these deals are not supposed to happen. If everything worked as intended (based on our understanding) none of us would be finding these deals. That is why there are no real rules that work every time. Furthermore, each store and region appears to have the ability to override price changes. So if store X in South Carolina is confident they will eventually sell Product X, they don't have to follow the Corporate price moves. Makes sense since a product may move better in specific areas. Home Depot has been making record profits. They seem to know what they are doing, big picture wise. So you have to become very observant to figure out what works and what slips by at your stores. Dchomak demonstrates over and over, superior observation skills. He may be fortunate to be near stores that move big margin items and can afford to be sloppy with low margin stuff, but no one here has matched him yet even in his region.
