13-inches Humongous reflector HID host found (final reading of about 3.8M cd)

looks like its raining there also. nasty storm passed south of the philippines.

are those shots around 2 km distance? cant wait for january. dont want to order anything until the Christmas is through. to minimize any risks on the packages.

btw any approximate runtime you have with the stock battery?12v 7mah if im correct?

Woah...that typhoon sure is nasty. I am pretty sure that the weather is going to be even worse next year. More and more heat right here on Earth, that energy needs somewhere to be released. Since when did typhoons happen in East Asia in December near Christmas time?

Stock battery is 5.5AH, but there is space for 7.2AH as it is actually designed for 7.2AH just that the dimensions allow for 5.5AH. 100W ballast takes about 8.6amps steady after heating up.... Probably it's 20 mins or so.

I have a 2.2km shot on a building above. The cloud shot is 700m away and prob about 400m elevation. As it's raining, i can't go to the roof and do 90 deg straight up shots.

Edit - oh, so TS Washi was just a tropical storm, but just 9mph shy of a Cat 1 typhoon.

New photo

Very nice.

That pic is now my screensaver. :)

Chicago X, glad you like it.... from a photographic POV, it should be aimed lower to get more of the buildings. But it's supposed to be a beamshot, not a scenic night shot photo. hehe....

You see that it has a star shape corona. Those stars have a candlepower of about 200k! hehe....

Nah, the negative space is perfect for an editorial layout, or in this case, for the icons on the desktop !!!

I agree with you on the composition if you were going after the poster market. I had a buddy with a Chicago skyline shot has banked him over 20K in residuals !!!

EDIT: I'm working on acquiring a huge Fresnel lens from a rear projection setup. I'm hoping to assemble something attached to a huge lump of copper that will throw a visible beam like that.

If you like, this is a higher res version saved with minimal compression. http://www.pbase.com/weddings_events/image/140439024/original.jpg

This climate change phenomena is starting to make its presence felt.storms dont usually last until december here and they very rarely make it down south of the Philippines.Hence the big loss of life there. Washi had heavy rains which is deadlier than high winds.

NIce cloud shots.btw.

A good video on HIDs used in caves by my pal stollman. This somewhat demonstrates why HIDs are preferred over LEDs for usage in large caves as it just sucks up all the lumens (for my case it's birds nest "caves", used during the collection of birds nests), unless you can stick 10pcs of XM-Ls in a light.

Scheven_architect wanted this image, 65W Aliexpress/Ebay and DRY in Turbo (~ 4 amps) and DBS V3 aspheric EZ900 but it's somewhat unfocused

Hehe i just love this :) the DRY which is bright as hell if seen alone seems so faint in this picture. Gonna order me a 85W 'ebay' HID flashlight pretty soon! Love the EDC factor of the DRY but it has to be a mighty feeling to have a light which easily brightens up +500m and has 4 times the lumen of my DRY. Although i know the SM5200 is cheaper and will outthrow a flashlight shaped HID easily i can't get over the form factor/size of it. I know how far my DRY throws, I have seen pictures of the TK 70 humiliating the DRY in throw and I have seen pictures (from you) of the EBAY hid humiliating the TK70 so i guess the throw of an ebay HID will do for me (although it gets humiliated by a sm5200 :))

just ordered a sm5500. now the waiting starts.:)

finally got some pics of my 5500 to post

interior shot showing stock 35w ballast in its plastic case.

metal wire clip holding the bulb base to the reflector's opening

target house at center is approximately 430 meters

control shot

TK 41 turbo

DBS v3 Aspheric with 1.5a pill.

sm5500 - stock 35w ballast / 35w bulb (6000k)

sm5500 - 55watt ballast / 55w bulb (4300k)

that house really felt the brunt that night.just made sure no one was home before we took those shots. next pics will be at a longer range.

I think you can fine tune it for significantly better performance. It should look like a star with the brightest hotspot (not necessarily smallest hotspot). If you have a lux meter then it's a piece of cake by memorising the position (rotate left/right, move up down left right, just need a lot of patience screwing and unscrewing it.). If you have a lux meter and give me readings, i'd be able to tell you if it's good to go. :)

Amaretto got interested in it as well and purchased it, and modded the heck out of it as well.

i just dont understand why this beast doesnt come with the adjustable stand.

you can see there is a provision for it to be attached. that is one thing i need to do a mod for. tried to fit a costco light adjustable stand but its too wide.

It comes with it, probably just out of stock from the factory (Sunfat HK) or something.

just skimmed through this thread again.

has anyone found where to buy this w/o having to email the alibaba seller in the OP?

hey, has anybody got one of those sanmaks that run on a cig plug, no internal battery? i’m thinking of getting one and modifying it to run on an internal battery but i’m not sure if that’s possible.

hello, excellent testing. 13-inches Humongous reflector HID host found (final reading of about 3.8M cd)

I am really surprised by a range of 2.2km, with 55w !!.
The reflector has some lens or only the 30cm screen.

With a 250w Osran halogen, do you think it could reach 2km?

Reflector is 8”

Thank you very much
