a new EDC light of 2017- JAXMAN E2L

Well, for me, it’s gotta be up against the wall or it ain’t right. I know they can’t sell em like that to everybody and they are worried about liability and all that so I have no problem with them being “standard” when they come to me, it just gives me some parts to play with later after I gut about 300 or 400 lights.

I used to stack chips 3 or 4 high on the Qlite, sometimes keeping the 3 high on the inside but not afraid to go with as many as I felt it took. hahaha Took me a pretty long time to realize I was putting more chips on than the cell could drive a light so it was a futile effort part of the time but good practice all the same.

I could probably put 4 more chips on this Qlite/Biscotti and let the triple have closer to 9A and hit 2000+ lumens but then heat would be a huge factor and the run time would suffer anyway so I may leave it like it is at 5.92A. We’ll see. Could be that it needs some XP-L2’s, at which point it will also need more amps for sure. Not concerned with whether or not the mcpcb will come out easy as the lathe can cut the mcpcb out with no difficulty. Much simpler than prying on the edges and messing things up.

So I guess I only need to find out what’s between my Nichia UV emitter and the black filter glass to see if I can improve the beam profile of that one, might add a nice chunk of copper and raise up the Nichia to just under the glass for a mule that has no hot spot or artifacts. Gotta be something I can mod on that one…

Yes exactly Dale, this light was dirt cheap fully assembled brand new and the potential I discovered taking a chance is incredible,
Jaxman saw my pics of his new AA light and I know he was not happy about that.
He has a lot of pride in his product and for me to get the light and just tear it a part sends the wrong message and I know it,
I’ve tried many times to explain why we do this but it doesn’t translate and now I just saw a member mention this on RMM’s thread as a possible great host, I asked to please respectfully do not do this to Jaxman, he will stop selling hosts completely, do it like the old days, you buy a flashlight because it looked cool but then find out it’s completely junk but still looks good so… you fix it up.
You mentioned that MT-G2 looking so good and I got to looking at it again and I have ordered some more of these 2 cell AA’s from Jaxman so I will be going with the MT-G2 and the new XHP50.2 as others, it’s just to good of a light to not just go crazy, but wanted to ask, on that Qlite zener modded driver RMM sells what do you think about adding just 3 more fets, use the normal side of your brain please, not the crazy burn down the town side of your brilliant brain… hah ha, I think as it is stock zenered with a add 3 should be 4A I think and should be good for this AA and the MT-G2 6v, the heat sinking is so so, maybe…?
I bought that E3 UV and been sitting here wondering myself what behind that black retainer and why black, boy that’s just asking for it, make a retainer black like in X project, it will make me look for sure… ha ha Already thinking how nice the body looks to me and I wonder if this might fit, and well Oh never mind…. ha ha

Edit, the driver in this AA is just 2 modes nicely spaced, great beam profile and a nice warm white tint is what I got, the reflector has great throw considering, but that’s all, then I saw all the great potentials, and oh boy what a sleeper.

I did a Jaxman M2 with XHP50.2 and a LD-2 driver :

There is some more info in the Jaxman M2 thread :

hi dear friend, just see your great working on a ourlight. :person_facepalming:
due to busy work, I visit BLF not at a full-day time. And maybe I cant read a long topic you are talking about. I really appriciate the DIYmen who can make all kinds of flashlight…But as a seller,I want say, that will make me crazy….haha……

Best wishes, and injoy what you like.

That’s really nice Khas, actually had no idea Jaxman put up a thread for this M2, he says one thing and then does another, so a tad irritating, not you or the group of course, but it seems at times the guy is playing to sides against the middle.
I’ve been sitting on this light for awhile now, not supposed to say anything about modding but finally decided I bought the light I’ll do as I like since I was fairly certain most here wouldn’t really give a AA light a second look and hoped a mention of the mod capabilities would generate some sales for him, well maybe won’t be like that again.
I had bought one thinking a rather difficult 14500 mod and when I got it and I realized just how great the light was and found out that any 17mm will drop in perfectly and the retainer ring is unbelievable and is able to support a double sided populated driver so sky was the limit.
I appreciate the link you posted but sure am surprised to say the least, completely reverse of what I thought he wasn’t going to do, but I guess after mentioning what I saw as far as modding but yet he didn’t tell me he started his own thread for this light well maybe profit and was maybe more than he could keep quit about himself ha ha,
Yep you did superb job and with the same LED that I am going with and also the MT-G2 and I’m waiting now for the QLITE 6V+ Zener’s with add 3-7135’s I think that makes it 4A’s or so, the reflector was another great surprise at 31mm wide and 23.5mm deep and a nice lite stipple with some smooth to it which is why is was wondering about old issues with the XHP50’s and how the die’s caused all those issues, doughnut hole etc. when used with a smooth reflector, but then Richard got hold of some of the new 50.2’s and told me that the new 50.2 has solved the old issues with smooth reflectors and showed a picture of a no modded C8 with the 50.2 just thrown in to see what it looked like and it looked fantastic, what’s your take on that LED, with this lights stippled Op reflector, give you some throw at all…??
Can’t wait for the new 70.2 now, but yes this is a real sleeper of a AA 2 cell light for sure and well worth the money, that is one nice build you’ve done…!
I sincerely thank you for your posting that thread with the link, thank you I had no idea…

I have built Zener modified Qlite drivers and Wight’s PZL driver with a Zener mod for the 6V emitter, but the 7135 chip is not designed to run with an 8.4V power supply so there is potentially a problem with that if using the light for longer periods and/or in the lower modes where the regulation chip is holding back more of the current.

I prefer to use the MOSFET driver and if need be tone it down with PWM. The little 14500’s can be surprising, a pair of em can do 6A or more in most cases and of course you can just avoid Turbo to make it easier on the cells.

LED4Power’s LD-2 is a better approach, I think. I have a few of those left, might try that some day. Nice mod Khas, bet it’s a really sweet performer in a “sleeper” of a light!

Hi Paul, I hate to say this but I think you work so hard you just might be crazy, but your a good man and always treat me very good thank you, this must be better than my Long Emails to you… Gary
Hope you like my pictures, I know your product is always high quality but this AA light is over the top, meaning the best light you have made for easy modifying yet, just a perfect light, Thanks…!

Thanks Dale this does explain why some issues have come up in some of my 14500 builds, now I get it, and now looking at that LD-3 or even the 2 as you mentioned, sounds much better really.
I am currently using RMM’s WindyFire cells and they are really nice, HJK gave them a nod and so does Richard obviously and your comment about amps explains everything, thank you,
Every build I do I always think I have it right but I’m still light years away from your knowledge so before I flip the switch for the first time I still hold it out at arms length and then fire it, never know,
I’ve really blown some stuff up, that learning curve can get steep at times.
Did you buy the UV E3 also? Or, the U1 I think it is with the pill in it?
I think you might be thinking or seeing what I’m seeing and it’s not for Norland but just a nice looking shell to me anyhow and I’ve still not looked inside yet but have to today it’s killing me,
I’m buying that other $20 UV also, seems it’s the only way now to get the shell but I see potentials.
But I am overly curious what your up to frankly and I’m doubtful it is for curing anything and it’s not curing my curiosity … ha ha
There is the Dale take on things, so if curiosity killed the cat I am dead but it’s a must know situation for sure, might save me from myself … ha ha

I got the U1, it’s a midrange Nichia UV that’s between 2 I already have. Tiny by my larger ones standards but it makes a nice amount of light and things really fire up under it. I got it for general purpose checking, like, how clean is your bathroom REALLY? I have one I built that I took with us to MS a couple of weeks ago and scoped out the hotel room. It actually passed quite well but then it was a newly remodeled room. Visually, our laundry room looks quite decent. The UV light says otherwise! There are detergent splashes down the counter and on the wall, a shocking mess! Dare I show mom?

This one is a tiny emitter and the driver doesn’t even have chips on the spring side, so it’s probably only doing about 700mA. I have a NVSC333A (think that’s right) that’s pulling 3.8A! It’s wickedly powerful for a single UV emitter. Cures Norland very fast.

The U1 has a matte black ano that is really well done and the text is all aligned, like they assembled each light for the text part, not pulling bits of single pieces out of a box. Nice work.

Yeah, I hear ya, you can bet I was a bit on the antsy side when I fired up my DBC-05 Triple XHP-50.2 the first time… didn’t know if it was gonna pull 20A or 30… have learned to test fire with a piece of steel across the tube to the cell first, beat’s screwing the tail cap on and hitting the switch. (also learned to test for continuity before even putting cells in, to make sure the positive spring isn’t in circuit with the ground)

Me no likey smell of magic smoke!

Ha Ha Ha, Oh wow, I am right with you and the UV inspections and I’m single but still there’s no excuse and that UV has disturbed me more than once that’s for sure, the Convoy I got is pretty good and it shows just how bad I am at house cleaning but also handy when looking for things in the carpet, I’ve lost stuff and grab to UV and found what I lost in seconds, then the cats, oh, never mind I love them anyhow, it the just knowing it’s there but not visible, and don’t take these UV’s I’ve discovered to lady friends homes to show them what I thought would be funny, it wasn’t at all, they will get very very mad at you, they to are some really lousy house keepers for ladies so I don’t feel to bad, but the dust is what gets me, it shows just how dusty things get,
I just tore apart that E3 UV and it’s got a pill and a decent reflector but is still longer than a Utorch UT01 with a 16mm board and driver pilled, so I like the looks but the output is fairly useless so will do something eventually with it, my curiosity is cured, for now, Thanks Dale
By the way so darn funny to hear you say how antsy it can get on some builds, I did a crazy mod on the Maxtoch 2X and used the remote switch to fire that one, it’s always so nice when nothing happens, better safe than overly sorry… ha .!
I think I’m cut and pasting that bit about test for continuity into my couple years now, The Book of Dale, The Enlightening, and all things sketchy or dangerous that you can do with flashlights during your weekends currently for sale at 7/11 for only $19.95, by one now and I’ll give you the second one with a free dangerous flashlight. :smiling_imp:

My E2 L arrived today. A very nicely done light too. No, I am not going to change one thing on this one…. it stays stock as it came. I have some host I’ll play with however.

A very well done light Jaxman…… :+1:

  • Fit & finish is usual Jaxman quality, just about perfect.
  • As Dale said earlier, I to really like this rich Blue-Gray color. It is definately a great alternative the same old boring black.

Heck, it has all already been said. Thanks for another great light Jaxman!!

so what you think? is this host ok for triple xplhi modding with fet driver?

Hi, I didn’t buy the host but I bought a ready made and immediately tore it down and looked it over and personally I don’t see where that would be an issue,
You could probably find more answers at this other thread here, The other thread by Jaxman
The owner of this company has so many threads going I can’t remember which thread I was at last least of all where I commented about something, getting sort of confusing but I think that link is for folks who have built a host and what their results and opinions of the E2L are, or suggestions, I think, this is all over the place sort of… I don’t really think you’d have an issue frankly… Good Luck…

Can I use this battery on this flashlight?

Yes, the protected Thrunite works well with the E2L.

Dropped a couple of the new AA lights in the shopping cart at Jaxman, added the small C8 design and some cells. The site wants to ship separately, I’ve asked if he can package it all together and ship FedEx so I get it quicker. Waiting on a reply. I don’t really need the cells, might just add an Z1 and run with it.

you know.I just worry for the heat transfer.we used in convoys the copper spacer.now we dont need it…but it helps.si I dont know now…huh

Yes, the heat build-up is different in the E2L: the outside gets hot quicker because there is not a chunk of copper in there that soaks the first heat. But the heat spreading over the shell is faster than in an S2+, that compensates it a bit.

One of my E2L’s has 219C’s (sm405 R9050) and a BLF X5/X6 driver and draws 10A on highest setting. It can be run at that for half a minute with no problem, it just gets so hot after that that you will switch it to a lower setting. And that 2000lm for half a minute is a nice addition to all the lower modes that can be used continuously.

So if used like that, the heat transfer is fine: even at 10 amps I see no problem for the leds in the period before the shell gets so hot that you will automatically switch to a lower mode. Your time at turbo may be a little bit shorter than with a S2+ with copper spacer, what you get back is a flashlight that is a bit shorter and more lightweight.

Now we can order Stateside,
RMM has the lights available for us, along with the hosts.
Jaxman E2L

Good to know. Thanks Tjohn.
Richard needs to correct the brand name as it currently displayed “Convoy”.
