Jetbeam E10R and E01R Video Review

Press and hold 1 second to turn off.

No thank you.

I’m with you. I absolutely hate press and hold off lights

Thanks for the review and video.

Saw the comment on your video about clip reversal. How about if you reverse the tube? Are the head and tail cap threaded with the same pattern and if so and you reverse the body, will the light function? (edit: As charging circuit is integral to the body tube, I see now that it’s not reversible)

Bummer about the half capacity charging issue on the E01R. Hopefully JETBeam will resolve that in the near issue.

If it’s the right light then I’m in. Otherwise I tend to agree. Click on, click off. It tends to be the first big thing I look at in a UI. I hope manufacturers take note. Single click on, single click off. Not press, click. Otherwise, I’m too often forgetting or getting confused by my “convenient” flashlight. I’ll click it off and put it in my pocket but it’s actually now in low mode. I hope manufacturers take not. I too feel like an otherwise good light is now sidelined because of this. Again, this is my own personal opinion. :frowning:

It really is a shame honestly. It’s as if these companies just copy the other guy who got it wrong and now somehow we have the majority of side switch lights with ridiculous and unintuitive UI.

There’s only one button operating the ui/power playa. They’re not copying other dudes ui there’s not much you can do with one e switch. The jetbeam pro 2 has the one (short press) click on/off but you have to hold down switch to change modes and the delay is pretty annoying. Or you long press to turn on or long press to turn off like this one is. Unless they have a Nitecore like half press e switch that’s the way it has to be. Good vid OP.

Thanks for the video review… Sorry i didn’t watch the whole 30min…

I received a E10R today. Pretty nice AA light. The USB port is concealed in the head and thus waterproof which is a good thing - but you have to unscrew the head to charge up. A quick test with a Sanyo UR14500 shows it’s quite bright on high - similar to Utorch UT01 or Klarus Mi7. The UI is not that great though but i can live with it. However i find this light to be rather long. It’s actually longer then a DQG Tiny 18650.

I tried a few double clicks to see if it can be locked out… it did not work. I should read the instructions…

If it`s the same as my E01R to lock hold the button down around 3 seconds until the led flashes when the flashlight is powered off, to unlock do the reverse.

John.

One button is not an issue at all. There are single e-switch lights out there get it right. This is one of the many that get it wrong.

Turning a light on or off should not require any special effort or knowledge or thought. The basic function of a light is to turn off and on when you want. Thrunite has it right. Olight has it right. And some others. Most do not.

Just my speculation, but I think most people, including myself aren’t needing to constantly change modes. Having the light mode-memory’d where you want it and one click on, one click off seems most convenient. A light requiring 0.6 seconds to turn on or off but 1.2 seconds activates epilepsy mode is just ridiculous. Another light requires two clicks to turn off (High-low-off)… but a quick double click takes you to strobe. Think about that madness.

I’ll quote myself from another thread:

If it`s the same as my E01R to lock  hold the button down around 3 seconds until the led flashes when the flashlight is powered off, to unlock do the reverse.

Yes. Sorry, I meant to have this in my review but managed to overlook it. Lock out will prevent accidental activation in the pocket.

Just received mine yesterday. Overall is pretty satisfactory. The anodization is flawless as with my other Jetbeams. The beam has a more pronounced hotspot compared to the UT01.

Tried to flip the clip the other way round, while it will mount, but it won’t light up. Guess it lost it’s contact with the space taken by the clip on the head side?

Wondering which way to lock out is better without slight drainage on the batts? Press and hold lock out or turn the head slightly to cut the contacts?

So how do Thrunite and Olight do it?

As KK pointed out, having a single e-switch is the issue here. When you do a single quick click, how does the light know if you want it to turn off or progress to the next mode? There is no way for the light to distinguish the possible intentions of the user here, unless it has some kind of sophisticated pressure sensing algorithm and hardware like some smart phones do, where a soft press means one thing, and a higher pressure press means another.

I have two lights currently with side e switch from different manufacturers the behave in this exact same manner. It is very intuitive to me that if I’m operating an e switch light, a long press turns it off.

Olight
Single Click - on
Single Click - off

Zebralight
Single Click - on
Single Click - off

Both change modes by a press & hold while on.
Both also have access to moonlight via a press & hold from off (for the ZL it is a short press & hold).

I don’t have any Thurnite’s with a single electronic switch.

Thanks for the info. So this again shows the limitation of a single e switch. Long press/press-hold is utilized here for mode switching instead of on or off. It’s a case of pick-your-poison.

Some people are going to be mad that they need to hold to change modes, just like some here don’t like to hold to turn off. To me, between the three choices of which operation to assign long press/press-hold, I would choose off. The reasoning here is that there is likely less urgency to need an instant response from a light since you’re turning it off, compared to someone who might be frantically trying to get usable light while turning it on or getting to the right mode.

1 second hold on

1 second hold off

EDIT: Instruction say 0.5S but it feels longer.

John.

For that, I’m speechless.

I have a couple of Thrunite TN20’s. IIRC interface is:
Long press from Off: Firefly
Short press from Off: Memory (last mode on)
Short press from On: Turn off
Long press from On: Mode rotation
Double click from non-turbo (including off): Turbo
Double click from turbo: Strobe

Don’t recall if it has SOS or how to get to it.

Here is my Trunite TN4A

From Off:

-Regular short click to ON (last mode)
-Hold to Moon
-Double click to Turbo

From On:

-Hold to scroll Low/Med/High
-Double click to Turbo from anywhere
-Double click only from within Turbo for Strobe
-Regular short click to Off

So you have direct access to three brightness levels from off- the lowest, the highest, and one between those. There is no frantic searching problem. And you maintain the logical and intuitive function of single normal click to turn on and off. And there is little to no chance you would ever activate Strobe accidentally. To me, this is the best of all worlds. The light can function as a normal flashlight turning on and off with a simple click to suit the needs of 90% people, and to the mode changing junkies (what are you guys doing anyway?) you can access the lowest, highest and a middle mode directly from off without scrolling. And it does this without making one action similar to another, and without some timed hold for 0.6 seconds to do X but 0.9 seconds to do Y garbage.

With a little bit of thought a single switch is not a limiting factor. It’s only limited by thoughtless design.

I have both E10R and E01R on the way, so hopefully I will like the UI. I already have some Olights, including the S20, whose UI I like a lot. The press-and-hold from off to get moonlight is really useful, while still keeping the simple single press to get the memorized mode.

Have they fixed the NiMh 50% battery charging problem on the new stock?
