ChrisC's honest £5 inspection light review

First off I’d like to appologise to Swi @ Banggood for being really slow to review this light. I’ve had the light a bit over 3 weeks now and I’ve had various excuses that have caused me to not get on with the boring part of getting sent lights, the writing up of the review. The positive part of this is I’ve actually had time to play with the light a lot more than I usually do when reviewing a light and that can only be a good thing.

I normally don’t buy “cheap” lights as I’m a bit of a snob when it comes to flashlights. I was asked if I’d like to review a couple of cheaper lights so I thought what the hey I’ll have a play. The little review that follows is for a cheapo inspection light:

As expected, a photo of the box. Not your usual brown box, this one wants to show off what is inside.

Box

Contents - A light and a plastic bag. No bubble wrap, no spare parts just the light in a bag. To be fair you don’t exactly need spare parts as the light isn’t sold as waterproof so you don’t need spare o-rings.

Light in the hand - it feels lightweightand a good size.

The LED in this unit is a “COB” (chip on board) light and it puts out a decent amount of light that will allow you to work on a car, read a book or whatever you need a decent spill of light for. The picture on banggood’s site that shows a beam of light is pure garbage. This light doesn’t have a spotlight in any way shape or form. The COB reflects off of a plastic reflector and then just chucks light out across a room. I’m not sure why they even felt the need to show a picture of it pretending to have a tight beam as you don’t use one of these style lights for that sort of job!

This light is a simple “on/off” light. There are no hidden modes, no high/mid/low. Just on or off. Stick 3x AA batteries in and you’re ready to go.
The reflector on this light appears to be a plastic reflector and on mine it seems to move around a little bit. The clear cover is plastic and I’d guess that this will scratch fairly easily.

I didn’t get any beamshot’s of this light because I was more impressed with the other light that Banggood sent me to review: THIS ONE - but tonight I’ll try and post a quick youtube video of this light and what sort of light comes out of it.

EDIT, youtube video provided and a quick 2 hour test to see how much the light dimmed down. The video was taken AFTER running it for 2 hours

Summary:
This is an honest review of a light and honestly this light wont get much use in my house. I’ll keep some batteries in it and keep it for emergencies (or I’ll gift this to a neighbor) but I think that if I used it in anger in the garage I’d probably drop something on it and break it. The plastic just doesn’t seem strong enough for heavy use and I’m not gentle with tools and I’m too clumsy with my stuff.

This is totally acceptable for a light that costs about a fiver delivered. It puts out plenty of light for the cost but the build quality isn’t good enough for something I’d like to rely on but it’s a case of “what do you expect, it was £5!”. I got this light for free and I’m thankful. If I paid £5 for it I wouldn’t be annoyed I just personally wouldn’t buy it for myself, it’s just not for me :frowning:

You get a usable amount of light that will allow you to work with it. The magnet holds it to things well and the clip at the top allows you to hook it to something. It is functional but it just feels a bit cheap.

Does the brightness fade out as the batteries get used up?
How long will it provide useful light on a set of batteries? (I’d use NiMH)

Ill set it up with a lux meter tonight and see. It’s got some rechargable batteries in it at the moment so I’ll let you know. I guess it’ll be on all night as it can’t draw much power

Okay I left the light running for 2 hours and checked the lux reading from my usual test setup. The numbers aren’t calibrated to anything but you can see it drops down over time.
