4xAA is 4.8V nominal, versus 3.7V for li-ion. You can not burn that off with a lineair/direct driver. It will need a buck driver, and it needs to deliver at least 6A to the emitters if you want an output that is remotely impressive with a floody quad set-up (2400 lumen). Quite a challenge that is!

The TK4A looks like a good start but I don’t like the ears at the bottom, it adds unneccessary length, in my opinion of course.

So only 1.2v… I can not believe in 4P AA.

Consider the Q4 the ultimate muggle light and hopefully opening doora to sweet AA yet complex cool firmware running flashlight mods on SK68, Kronos X5, etc lights.
And indeed modded TK4A mini soda can lights needing only 1 AA instead of 4.
The 14500 is neat for those qanrinf max output but 1* AA with Narsil/Bistro is a goal.

HKJ has tested Eneloop AA up to 10A current. If it takes 2.5X to convert AA to LED running voltage, you’d need 14A input to get 6A output. One cell probably couldn’t handle that, but two might, three sure would, and four would be gravy! The real challenge will be finding a boost driver capable of 1xAA input to ~3V 6A output. I don’t know that any have even been attempted, but that driver has actually been desired around here for a while.

@TheMiller - Firstly, I appreciate all the effort that has gone into conjuring this light and the amount of time and resources you and many others have poured into it. For a conventional reflectored thrower, I truly hope it turns out to be the masterpiece everyone ever dreamed it would be. I apologize if this was the inappropriate thread to mention the Ledil Seanna. It would certainly be a departure from the conventional flashlight build, but I believe it can not be ignored when considering the maximum range potential of the XHP-35.

A quick search confirms there have been several frankenlights already built using the Ledil Seanna/XHP35 combo that approach just under 1 million cd using older binned 35 emitters. Cracking the 1M or 1.1M barrier should be a no-brainer with the latest bins, carefully tweaking the max current level at the bench, a sufficient direct thermal path utilizing a 1 piece integral heat sink, while enjoying the HD version of the XHP35 emitter (more lumens and better beam pattern), which this hybrid “reflector” seems to prefer. In a build using the Seanna, the heat sink should protrude as part of the floor-plate assembly, not part of the bezel. Then the thermal path will be direct and without any thermal bottle necks. The Seanna and heatsink are already proven off-the-shelf parts, easily attainable and simple to mod on a CNC. I think there is enough brain-power in this forum to make it not only highly functional, but also aesthetically pleasing… if not just plain bad-ass looking. The concept and production steps are far more simple than the conventional flashlight, if one has the tooling to implement it.

Unless I missed it, and someone actually tested a reflector + lens + XHP-35HD or HI that beat 1 million cd AND produced a pleasing and usable beam pattern, it looks like the Seanna with the HD emitter will completely murder any other option that I have yet to read about. Im still in for your light if it beats the range of the TN42 in real world performance, and doesn’t suffer the usual myriad of unforeseen congenital problems most other BLF derived flashlights have suffered. So I realize its a tall order with a very difficult path to success. But I think it could be so much more with the Seanna option. Granted, it would be a large departure from the style of huge “flashlight” we are all used to lugging or slinging. Most anything with 4 or more 18650’s is unwieldy by any standards. If you own one or even several dozen chunky lights (as many of us do), you typically chose the light for the task at hand to satisfy the anticipated situation. Among the larger variety, size and weight is usually a secondary consideration… which may be why we own so friggen many of the darn things!!

If this isnt the time or place, please feel free to shelf my blurbs and rethink it in a future project at your option. I hope someone at some point can make a go of it in a production flashlight. Then we can all enjoy something that just might force the flashlight industry to rethink their direction in order to compete with a new level of unmatched performance in this fun niche market. I wont go into great detail, but I have already approached several of the large manufactures to consider unlimited flagship thrower models, featuring pre-culminators that focus spill beam back into the emitter to further excite the phosphor, in conjunction with a Seanna style hybrid Fresnel and variable focal length for beam angle adjustment, removable emitter mounted copper pills for different tint emitter quick-changes and swappable conventional reflector and lantern head assemblies (just to scratch the surface). These are all well proven technologies that have been proven many times on several forums. The obvious benefit of a real heat sinking solution that isolates heat to only the heat sink itself would also be a first outside of the frankenlight world (excluding the extremely well executed and expensive Olight X6 Marauder).

Reason, we do not know what will be used in BLF specials and even Narsil and Bistro started smaller.
Though all developers that are doing their work open source seem happy in doing so, financial rewards or a little donation are no motivations for them. The big projects can get so much attention it seems nice to give others a small token of BLF appreciation making them able to do a Oshpark order or use it for tools or something, knowing they are seen and speeding things up as among others the Kronos projects and Q8 have sped things up too.

You guys are the core why manufacturers take us serious as a group with real information and input and not just a forum of consumers.
It is the likes of you that are making it possible for people like me to dare ask manufacturers to look at an idea and thus making BLF specials possible, not to mention the coolness of what gets done with super firmware, lighted tailcaps and what not

Mike C, I didn’t think I deserved to be on the list of recipients, but you sure do. Your work around here is undervalued, IMHO. Nobody talks much about your contributions, but IIRC you’re actually the guy responsible for a lot of the coolest ideas, like 3+ channel drivers for better efficiency. It’s cool you’re going to “give back” your donation by building drivers and doing a giveaway. It reminds me of Old Lumens in a way. He had received lots of flashlights from manufacturers for reviewing over the years, and he never kept them, but always did a giveaway here.

Also, I want to take the time to say thanks to everybody that donated. I hope you all feel good about the decision The Miller made here. I’ll try to make sure whatever I do is a push forward for BLF somehow. I’ve learned so much in my time at BLF, that I can’t possibly pay back for the knowledge I’ve gained. I wouldn’t even be doing these kinds of mods, or designing my own boards, if it weren’t for the inspiration and encouragement of my fellow BLF’ers.

I’ve already got a GAW going right now (gonna end today). So, in an effort to “give back” my donation, I think I’ll try designing another crazy, cool, or niche driver board. My reasoning is that it’s the guys on the fringe, making the niche items, that push most crafts forward in life. So maybe I’ll find another nifty host and make a driver for it. Then, if the build goes to plan, I’ll do a GAW of the modded light. The donation money will help me buy the board from OSH Park and the components to populate it, and maybe the host to put it in. I don’t know when I’ll get all this accomplished. Perhaps it will be done in time for my 5000 post GAW! :partying_face:
