Test/review of Aspire INR18350 1300mAh (Black-yellow)

We may already have seen it in 18650, I suspect not all of the high current 18650 from China is made by Panasonic/LG/Samsung/Sony.
We will probably see a new generation of all the other small sizes (10440/14500/18500) soon.

they really use the enhanced volume compared to 16340s

Thanks for the review HKJ, it confirms in more detail what others have found too.

I think they are easily for sale in Germany but not over here, and many other places are difficult too.

I took a risk and ordered 25 of these batteries at $4 a piece at the Aspire shop (to get free shipping). If they make it to the Netherlands without additional customs fees, I can re-sell 20 of them to other folks on BLF, for $4 per battery plus shipping (for two batteries $1.80) in a simple bubblemailer without tracking.

Thanks for the test. I’ve been holding of to buy any other kind of battery then 18650s except for 3 14500 cells because of the low capacity vs cost price. If capacity rises I might be persuaded into getting some if the price is right.

Is it possible to estimate how many charge/discharge cycles these cells can handle?

The smaller Li-Ion batteries are both low capacity AND expensive… but they are small.

Whatever the price and low capacity, i love my AA/14500 lights. I worship my 18350 lights… and 16340… So much light out of small bodies. Excellent for EDC. I don’t mind so much for the convenience of smaller size.

All true but it’l cost you a lot more on cells in the long run. As they probably have the same amount of usable charge/discharge cycles but only 800 to 1100mAh vs 2600 to 3400mAh. Price for an 18650 is about the same (maybe even cheaper) then any smaller sized cell.
But yeah, I’m starting to like my Klarus Mi7 now with a 14500cell. I’ll see how long the 14500 ’s last me.

Yes they can. Both the top and bottom goes slightly above the plastic.

Although those 18350 cells with 1100+mAh offer 20-25% more capacity then others, they are still a long way from what we could expect considering 18650 current capacities.

For instance: Sony VTC6 3120mAh / 650 * 350 = 1680mAh.

That’s not quite right as there is some fixed overhead at both ends of the cells which does not contribute to capacity. I have not taken any cells apart but looking at the top, I’d say it’s at least 5mm of waste. So 300/600 would be a more realistic ratio.

Also, as this provides 15A (barely) in half the capacity, it should probably be compared to a 18650 which provides 30A. Perhaps a VCT5 would be a better basis.

So while there is likely still some room for improvement, it’s probably not that much.

Maybe I’m wrong here, but I would think there will be some volume in any cell that is lost to overhead mechanisms not used for energy storage, so that a 18350 will never achieve the theoretical maximum capacity with relation to its size compared to what’s possible in a 18650 (haven’t had my morning coffee so I hope I’m making sense).

By the same token, if there’s a 18950 format, then it would hold much more energy to make 18650 look unimpressive, due to the same volume of overhead across all cell formats.
