Some of you have noticed I’m not around much anymore. However I was in this from the beginning so I’m honored to have been sent a sample.

First impressions are very good. I don’t own a lot of “premium” brand lights, but I have had my hands on a few for review purposes, and this feels and looks just as high quality as any of them. You really are getting superb value for the money in this groupbuy.

The things I like most:

1. The anodization is very consistent all over my sample. Even inside the driver compartment it looks great.

2. The driver bay is finished better than most “budget” lights. We are getting a thick brass battery contact ring, plus retaining screws (which I like better than a retaining ring). I especially like that my “Q8” vias made it into the final driver.

3. Narsil. It may be too much programming for a mainline manufacturer to release, but for an enthusiast’s light it’s perfect. Ramping mode is easy to pick up for a beginner and provides all the function a muggle could ever want, but if you want to spend the time you can go in and change almost everything to however you want it.

Although I have not been directly involved in one before, we all know there have been hiccups with groupbuys in the past. That said, I have been very impressed with Thorfire’s attentiveness and consistency in this long process. I may not log in here much, but I read emails between the team several times per week. I think everyone on the giant list of buyers will be thrilled when they finally have these lights in hand.

I’ll try to pay attention and answer any questions y’all have for me about my sample, though this thread really does move fast.

Finally here is the Q8 with one of the big reasons for my inactivity, Winston.

My Favorite Modded Lights: X6R, S8 , X2R , M6, SP03

Love what you wrote about the Q8 Pilotdog68. You need to love Winston. Carry on. They aren’t pups forever. Dogs are some of the very best “people” and they depart far too soon.

In general I’ve found that, any time I find something really good, particularly for a good price, it’s probably a good idea to get more than one because these things tend to never be available again.

Are you familiar with Sturgeon’s Law? In his career of science fiction, people would often complain that 90% of sci-fi was crap… and why is sci-fi so bad, they’d ask? Sturgeon made the observation that, while this is true, science fiction is not unusual — because 90% of everything is crap.

The reason to get a Q8 is because, as far as we can tell, it will be an exception to that rule. It’s the good stuff, and the good stuff doesn’t happen often.

Use one…. Have a spare to do with whatever is determined at a later date. The price is right, for what promises to be a fantastic light.
So get, while the getting is good. Wink
“Need” has nothing to do with it in my case. Smile

+1 on the PD post. I'm the only one having all 3 generations of prototypes, and the quality improvements from the 1st to 2nd/3rd generation was huge: the square threading, interior finish, anodizing, stainless steel bezel, button improvements - that's just what you can notice.

And, maybe Thorfire is better about this, but in general… quality tends not to be consistent over time with items manufactured in China. People are always looking for ways to increase the margins by a few cents, so parts change and designs change and after a while the thing barely resembles its original self. This is why the Q8 was created in the first place — because original-quality SRKs were no longer available.

Plus, the price will probably go up significantly after the first batch… so it’s good to get them while they’re hot.

Yep, “if you like it, buy a spare” has been a good approach for a while.

Of course, people look at me funny seeing me using a Treo phone and a Palm PDA.
But hey, I’ve got spares.

Do the new springs require an extra round of prototypes?

Kepling, pretty sure it was discussed that the spring change would’nt require a sample round, probably some pictures and some specs and then they’d run with it. My memory though, can get things was out of alignment, so it’d be nice to hear more on this from The Miller and/or Tom E.

I don’t think so.
The preformance on a single spring is tested with 30Q cells and a change to one bigger instead of 2 smaller can only improve things so it should be good.

ROTFL! I loved the levity Blinker but not everyone will.

Stop smiling! You’re not here to enjoy yourselves! (according to that POM supervisor written of above somewhere, BTW, that’s almost a direct quote from her)

Hey, I know! We bought an Amazon Fire TV stick yesterday. I was told “Buy the stick and there are all sorts of shows and movies available, you can probably drop Netflix.”. Well, yes and no, mostly no. There are shows available, but it’s one show of a 3 season tv show. I didn’t see any free movies of any worth. But Netflix is costing me $30+ every month and the good movies mostly don’t stream but are only on DVD. I’m testing a 30 day trial of Amazon Prime for $11/month and the streaming movies look to be good ones. Plus the smart TV was the pits with Netflix. The movies would take forever to load. If paused they might never resume. I had no love affair with it. The stick makes Netflix operate as good with streaming movies as they run on my computer. So keep Amazon Prime or Netflix, the stick makes our “smart” TV finally fulfill it’s promise. Oh, YouTube! That would be the thousands of free movies (videos). I saw no others. It is nice to see youtube videos on the big screen though.

Did I miss something? Or not?

I’m considering getting a Roku for local TV stations when the atmosphere doesn’t cooperate. Anyone with any Roku experience? I have a few more HDMI ports that I can use if Roku will get my wife her game shows and us our local news and weather when we want it instead of when the atmosphere tells us we can have it. No I won’t pay for cable; they want far too many $ monthly for junk channels that I’ll never watch.

Just buy a chromecast Wink

Is Netflix that expensive in USA?
Here it costs 20$ or so and we share the expenses with my family, since we use it with 3 families, and still everyone has their own profile.

Just in case i will be picked out at customs and have to pay taxes for both of them Wink

Also received a message from Martin Freeme about the estimated price of the utorch UT03, i think it will be better to go for a second Q8.

Yok’, yes, $31 and change for my package that includes 3 DVDs and streaming. The streaming basically doesn’t work through the smart TV*, only through the computer and I only watch movies on the computer monitor when the wife has the big screen once every few months. So IMO it’s too expensive for what I get.

* Streaming now works fine through the Fire Stick. But I won’t keep both Amazon Prime and Netflix; the goal is to drop Netflix.

But the straw that broke the camels back with Netflix was their move to a simple thumbs up or thumbs down for suggestions as to whether I will like a movie. The old system was a 5 star rating that could produce a 2.6 rating (for instance). Depending on the movie I could take a chance and lots of times it worked out. Now it’s yes or no, so it’s basically a useless rating system. They want to make the decision for me and that’s not what I want at all.

So I’m looking around. FWIW, streaming works so much better through the TV with the fire stick since it uses my WiFi. So it’s LG programming that somehow screws up the streaming since the fire stick goes around LG programming within the TV. Movies now load instantly, if I pause a movie I can come back to it with no message that it can’t be done and try again later, Just better all around.

But to get full use out of it requires one to pay for premium content of some sort.

One thing the LG smart TV will do is the internet, sort of. If a race is happening in the UK and it isn’t being shown locally I can sometimes go online and find it streaming through “private” websites. But to use the internet on the TV as I’m doing now is just rubbish. It can be done, but if that was my sole method of internet access I wouldn’t be on the internet.

@Briank

I share your experience with smart TV’s.
I own a philips home theatre set (one of the most expensive ones at the time) and it is RUBBISH
Since Philips fell in Chinese hands it is crap.
The HTS was working ‘fine’ for 1 year, after that i did some firmware upgrades and gradually some features of the smart tv were disabled, and now it is not even smart anymore, nothing works, every internet feature is just disabled! (Did i pay 899€ for that crap?)
I can use the radio/cd/dvd/br functions and thats it.
Even the standby button which is a physical button on the thing does not work 9 out of 10 times, so i have to use the remote.

No i am done with philips, but the WAF was playing at the time.

I preferred a nice japanese brand.

Now i am using a 30€ chromecast and it works magnificent, my kids play youtube on the ipad and cast it to the TV, and during the evening i and/or my wife use Netflix or other media.

Works like a charm using WiFi. I think it can be compared with the firestick

I got my first TV at the tender age of 45, so if it start being a smart it will go strait for recycling plant.

Not much worth watching on flow TV, and i cant seem to find a steaming service that steam what i like to see, and that’s not mind numming series and so on.

Sadly i am forced by my landlord to pay for a cable TV package, if it wasent for that sad fact my TV would be in its box.

Arrgh! Cable! I won’t even consider it today. I must have cable for my internet (and now Amazon Prime), or pay even higher prices for decent connection rates via other means. But to get a bundled cable package is just under $100, I don’t remember the actual amount. But basically it’s near $1200/year for most channels that I have absolutely no interest in watching and don’t want to support. Maybe someday a cable company will have a package that allows me to get only the channels I want. Then I might consider cable but not until then. So I maintain an antenna.

The fastest I can get is 60Mps, but I think we’re presently at 25. I ought to call and get the upgrade since it’s basically free, but I’m not having problems at 25 so IMO it just isn’t worth making the call.

OT, same experience here with smart TV’s. Slow and klunky with less than ideal UI.

Instead I run a 20ft hdmi cable from the gaming/entertainment PC to the receiver and use a wireless mouse and sometimes keyboard to navigate Netflix/YouTube/Light Gaming/etc on the big screen TV. Universal remote sets everything to the correct input with a push of a button.

Yes, he certainly took great pictures of the light Big Smile

From his pictures it seems that the plastic rings are not higher than the brass ring. I think this was brought up before. Can someone confirm that it will not act as protection against a reversed cell? Seems like the only protection in that case will be the cell’s wrapper. Better have a big fat warning about cell orientation somewhere because that design makes it look like it’s safe while it’s really not.
