Home Depot Deal Alerts & Discussion Thread

Whaaattttt?
Red
My favorite color of dining room furniture.

What alternate universe do you live in. In my universe that cabinet only comes in Black;

That’s a good price too, Black ones cost more. $398
AND they don’t have the chrome handle.

BTW, a tip for anybody getting push back from their wife on buying a tool cabinet.
Just remind them how impossible the (her) :stuck_out_tongue: kitchen would be with out the tool cabinets she has hung on the wall.
(Worked for me)

Today we leave for a short vacation in Ottawa Canada. Let’s see if I can find any bargains in a foreign country. I wonder if the self checkouts take American pennies. :

EDIT, 6:45PM ESDT

Turns out today is the 150th year anniversary for Canada and is a holiday. Home Depot’s are closed. Have to wait until tomorrow.

:+1:

I looked at that tool box, but I do not like the deep drawers on the upper tool box. Personal thing for me I know, but I like the deep drawers in the rolling cabinet.

In Ottawa, right across the steet from our hotel, is a home center chain called “Reno Depot” Sort of a French version of Home Depot.
Honest, these pictures are not ’Shopped

First thing after breakfast I headed on over to see what that is all about. Once inside the store, I was lost. Same as Home Depot, only different. Different colors, different prices (the exchange rate), different language (French). I walked around for about 45 minutes and took some pictures.
Battery recycle bin.

All prices are in Canadian Dollars which at the present time are worth about 77 cents US.

Here is the only clearance rack I could find, nothing there for me.

The tool section, all of the major brands. DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, Black & Decker, Stanley etc.

After I left the store, my mind blown and fully overloaded, I wondered if it was safe to drive to my next destination.
A real honest to goodness authentic Canadian Home Depot! Fortunately it was only 5 miles away.

Let’s see if I can spot any deals at the Gatineau Home Depot in Ottawa, Canada.
This looks familiar, but somehow the logo is a little different.
(Each letter is raised off the sign with White sides that give it a White drop shadow effect)

The battery recycle bin is located outside of the store, as you walk into the entrance.
And they accept alkalines, in the U.S. they don’t want them. More on that later.

I walked around for about 30 minutes. There was no self checkout, so there would be no way to check prices, or checkout with a penny item even if I found one. Also there were no clearly marked clearance endcaps. I did see lots of marked down prices in the isles, but they don’t use the “normal” clearance prices or stickers that I am used to.
I did find a number of items that I knew had already been pennied out in the U.S. but as to what their price was in Canada was unknown. Turned out none of them were at a penny. In fact, as others who live in Canada have stated, there are NO penny deals. The Canadian stores do not use the same clearance system as in the States.
Here is the 1 deal I did score though.
This flashlight, I spotted it in 2 places within the store. First here, at an endcap in the tool section.

and hanging on a pole in the front of the tool section right by the registers.

This is the 850 Lumen, triple emitter Defiant that I had been looking for. In an earlier post I described how I located what seemed to be an unopened forgotten case of them at a store in Connecticut when they were at the 75% off price of $3.32.
But a store employee and I could not locate them!
Here they were, priced at $12.88 Canadian, with a yellow sticker. The original U.S. price was $14.88, that I remembered, and if the Canadian price was $12.88 that meant it was a clearance price because with the exchange rate, the original HAD to be more than $14.88. Probably more than $20.
So with no price checker, I grabbed 1 and went over to the guy in appliances to scan it for price  He didn’t have a hand scanner, but just then another guy who did walked by. I handed him the light with the price tag down on the UPC code up so he could scan it. When I handed it to him, he turned it over and saw the sticker. He said there it is, $12.88.
I told him, yeah I know, but would you scan it anyway. He did, looked and the screen and suddenly pulled the screen to his chest.
I asked him what it said. He then shook the scanner and scanned it again. $3.16, that’s a GOOD price, he said. Then he said, YOU KNEW.
So I took it from him and causually walked away while he immediately got on his phone. As soon as I was out of their sight I fast walked to the 6 others that were hanging in plain sight in the tool section and checked out. I brought those 7 out to the car and went back in for the other 5 that were sort of out of sight and safe for the time being in the endcap.
I had to use my VISA card to pay for them as Home Depot Canada has no way to process American HD cards!
I figure after Visa adjusts for the exchange rate, I picked these lights up for about $2.43 American.

As I mentioned previously, the recycle bins in Canada actually encourage people to discard their NiMH and Alkaline cells there. In the US, they forbid it.
When I peeked inside this one, this is what I saw.

Lots of bags of AA Cells, Energizer Industrial Alkaline. The bags that held them were the ones that HD supplies at the bin.
Because there were so many, and they looked as though they were new, I figured HD dumped them there.
So I grabbed and bag and tried a couple out in my SK68. Being on the road with no other way to test them, I then determined that they were in very good condition. So I went back and got them all.
That’s a lot of cells!

I’ll probably give them to my nephew for his kids. They use up alot of batteries.

I picked up 2 of these “baseball bat” lights while in Canada. I have never seen them in the States.

They must have been around for awhile, because a different store had them a little cheaper.

350 Lumens and they run on 4xAA. $11.88 Cdn is about $9.30 US. Not a bad price!
First one I bought is a gift for a friend and the 2nd a souvenir for me.
Here is a larger version of the same type of light.

Never saw that one in the States either. Price is quite high.

I love bit sets and I can’t keep myself from buying them.
Last month when I was in Ohio I was seeing this 34 piece bit set all over the place at different HD’s at various clearance prices.

Many of the stores I found them on clearance had them marked at the 6 price, but they rang up at the 3 price.

While in Ohio with a friend, we came across these at $5.03 and he bought 5 or 6 for gifts for each of his many sons. I only bought 1.
But wait, the “3” price should be 75% off the original price of $14.97 and should be 3 something, not $5.03.
$5.03 would be 75% off a list price of about $20.
Later on, while traveling to Columbus we came across a store that had them at $3.83, not $5.03 and we both got refunded the difference. This store rang up for $3.83

After that trip, and while my wife and I were in Canada I found that same bit set with a so called free extra, 2 deep sockets. But the price in Canada was $38.82!!!

That is way more than what can be accounted for by the exchange rate, c’mon.
There sure were plenty for sale in all the stores.

I brought one of them up to customer service and showed them the U.S. price
(just to rub it in, I think)

Well anyway, as anyone following what we all do here, every item that goes on clearance at Home Depot WILL eventually go to a penny. If only you can find one.

A notable example is the 432 piece tool set that went from $399 to $349.00, then at some stores to $300.06 and then as a friend was able to score 3 at $100.03.
Well at that store, though there are none to be found, it has gone to a penny.

Likewise this 34 piece bit set is now a penny, and today I found 3.

I can’t believe i missed your trip to Canada by not stopping by this thread for a while :frowning:

I was thinking of you when I walked into Home Depot and started to realize that you and others from Canada were right.
NO penny deals.

I think I did start to get a handle on how things are done north of the border though.
Your clearance tags have dates too. I wasn’t able to figure out the exact significance of the date, only in general terms. That triple emitter flashlight that went for $3.16 Canadian had a date on the tag that was at least old enough to be a penny in the States. As it turned out, that date was old enough to cause it to go to the Canadian “6” price.
As far as I can tell………

The Canadian “6” price = the U.S. “3” price. That is, it is marked down about 75%
The triple emitter flashlight and a blowup of the tag.

That date of 10 jan 2017 would have been old enough to have gone to a penny in the States. That date is why I suspected it would ring up cheaper than $12.88, and the reason I had an employee scan the bar code. (there was no self checkout in that store)

I found many, many items that were 75% off scattered throughout the store. Most were tagged and a few were not.
These 100W Cree’s were not priced, but scanned for $4.66 Good price!

Here are some other items 75% off and priced at the Canadian “6” price. Notice the dates!

In Canada it seems that once an item is marked down 75% and given a “6” price, it can stay on the shelves. They don’t get removed, marked to a penny and thrown out.

Here is an item though that was marked at the “6” price and 75% off

That’s a 20A in wall timer. But check out the date!

Dec 30 2015
That’s really old. On a hunch I brought that one up and had it scanned.
“item not found”
Even in Canada, eventually stuff gets removed from the system. So to get a souvenir I went over to the electrical guy, had him scan for price, and once he realized it wasn’t in the system had him special price it at $3 for me.

I don’t go to HD enough to completely understand how the system works but penny deals non existent of course.
Basically something goes on clearance and stays where it is but a yellow tag, then eventually gets moved to one of the many clearance zones throughout the store (in its department) and sometimes they use end caps for clearance which is surprising since companies often pay extra to have their wares featured on an end cap.
In the old days (two years ago) a clearance item would show on the website at the clearance price, but today they often remove it once it goes on clearance, but they do mess up and keep it on the site sometimes.
Not all Canadian HD products are ever listed on the website at all, sucks when you go and its got no price and no web listing, then you need a helpful associate to check the price for you. Also clearance prices sometimes rise, apparently their system decides what items should go up even if they are already in the clearance area. Also the online stick levels can be very accurate or not very good, especially when less then 5 are remaining. That bulb you found was probably not listed on the website and fell through the cracks till you found it.
Usually yours get pennied out before ours starts discounting at all, i have used some of your pics to keep an eye on the same product here, sometimes it takes a few weeks, sometimes a year before it starts discounting, and they will sometimes get more in even though you bought it at a penny months earlier.

It’s true!

While scrounging around at Home Depots in Canada, I came across many many items that I have scored for a penny.
Here are the ones I noticed and snapped.
2 different items that look so much like each other that when one went to a penny and the other didn’t, the HD undertaker had a hard time telling them apart and I was able to score on each of them as they went to a penny.

about 2 weeks ago I found one of these for a penny

I found many of these. In Canada they were still at their full price of $6.98 Cdn

Likewise on this one. Price in Canada was at the “6” price of $1.86 That is a good price, but I already had enough.

Already pennied out in my area. Only found a couple, but this one is a recurring item. They come out every year, and every year they go to a penny. I found some a couple of years ago also.

These pennied out although I never scored one at that price. I did buy some at $1.42. I used this light to make
“My XHP-70 ”Sleeper Light” Mod”:My XHP-70 "Sleeper Light" Mod
Back then I paid full list price in the U.S. of $5.25

This is the ArmourMax 3D flashlight. It is huge and I bought a lot of them at $7.53. It did penny out and I did get a couple then too.
The date on this Canadian price tag is 30 June 2016, I thought for sure it would ring up for much less. But it didn’t :weary:

Got one of these in Ohio for a penny.

These recently went to a penny around here and I found quite a few. They actually fit the Harbor Freight paint guns I have.

Here are a whole bunch of the Bosch GLM 10X’s that went to a penny. In Canada they are reduced to $25.00

That 432 piece Husky tool set that my buddy caught at $100.03 and is only marked down to $349.00 from $399.00 in most other Home Depots is still full price in Canada.

These next pictures have nothing to do with pricing, they are pictures of my favorite multi function screw drivers. They are not sold at Home Depot in my area, but in Canada they were prominently displayed in every store I went to.
They are made in Canada. Super, high quality :+1:

Now, just so everyone doesn’t think I spent the whole time we were in Canada inside of Home Depots.
Some shots of a couple of interesting things I saw.
Artwork made from street lights.

And here is something NOT related lights.
Most people from Canada would know what that is.

Not most but it is a huge tourist attraction.
Did you do any of the museums, the museum of civilization is one of my favourites

BTW your HD picture collection must be huge!

While we were in Canada for Canada 150, we went to a special, temporary botanical exhibit.

There were lots of workers trimming these figures with a tool I had never seen before.

Later, about a week after we returned, we were over a friends home for dinner. They have a beautiful yard and are really into gardening.
When they heard about the exhibition in Canada, they actually asked to see our vacation pictures
When the pictures of this Makita shears came up, everyone agreed that was quite a tool.
Well, 2 days later when I got home there was one delivered to our house. My wife noticed the great enthusiasm I expressed for it at the party and decided I should have one.

Those blades are razor sharp and would probably take a finger off.
Good thing I still have extra Husky bags, it didn’t come with one.

Just some intersting deals I saw locally a couple of days ago.

An LED Black Light. Price was too high for me just to play around with, $14.97

GE is calling what I think are high CRI bulbs, “High Defintion” lights. From a marketing perspective, it could connect with consumers better than “High CRI”

Here are some “U” bent LED’s to replace the “U” bent florescents. On clearance for $3.83 each! Cheap.

I didn’t need these, but for $3.52 for a pair, I bought a package to play around with. One bulb capable of Soft White, Daylight or a warm glow. Turning the switch on and off quickly changes the modes.

These are light fixtures that screw into a porcelain light fixture as though it were a bulb. Very easy way to upgrade.

Sign of the times. A 10 pack of 4’ florescents for $7.83. I picked up 6 cases for a friend.

And this one was at Lowes. I REALLY thought I scored a deal. 2 - 175W Mercury Vapor Lamps for $2.50. But no, it was the right sized bulb, but my fixtures take High pressure Sodium. They regularly go for about $26 each and they still are.
I had to bring them back

A whole display of HDMI cables on clearance at the “2” price, 75% off.

All of these that is except for the 9’ Premiums in the center marked at $28.00

They went for a penny.

Awesome posts dchomak. Thank you for sharing your Canada trip and deal finds. Good stuff for sure.

Was the $28.“00” price a clue—what was the date on the HDMI cables, and also how did you know or suspect they would go for a penny?

I knew because I found some at another store 5 miles away earlier that week. They also were marked at $28.00 and went for a penny. For some reason those 2 stores missed all the markdowns on the 9’ Premiums cables.

Today all of them are gone. The rest must have went to a penny and the either got pulled, or someone else scored big time. (It wasn’t me)

I never made it Ottawa this year, its a big regret :frowning:
Those do look like awesome shears
