Poll: Should We Do Away With Anonymous Rude Marks?

Hi there teacher. Not to come down on you publicly, but again, by participating in an off-the-rails thread that is spawning an argument and getting tempers riled, rules were broken, and rude points happened.

Very true, well said.

When a lot of rude points start to rack up, there is often the false assumption that they are fraudulent hits. Seen from my end, it’s usually another story— in the case of a user that starts to go off the scale with rude hits, there are usually multiple users, many of whom have no dog in the fight, that mark the post(s) as rude.

I definitely will not be implementing a way for users to see who marked the post as rude. It doesn’t matter who marked it as rude, as long as it was a genuine response to something perceived as rudeness (as defined here), there’s basically no disputing it. Somebody was offended or concerned that rules were being broken, and it doesn’t matter who it was. What matters is what was said that offended the user. And that’s what you can see here:

As I said before, in the rare case that somebody tries to game the system to clobber a personal enemy with rude points, I can easily detect that and will take necessary corrective measures, including suspending the account.

Hey SB, can you give a list of most rude points given? Also without names.
That 48 current is a bit of a shock but made me think if there are, say 5 members giving 80% of all rudes or if it is a much smaller difference between the “top” 5 or 10 then 48-6-and lower.

Hmmm, I could probably figure out a way to generate that data, but it’s a bit harder to compile that. But I’m constantly checking my list of users that currently have non-expired rudeness points, and at any given moment it’s usually quite a short list (if any), and usually populated by a few repeat offenders.

I think the big question is who is going to organise the first 10000th rude post give-away.

How many did this thread alone generate for ya Glenn?

Not sure how else to contribute to this thread… :smiling_imp:

Just kidding, wasn’t me.

Believe it or not, none.

By knowing who marked you rude will only take the disagreement even further, and will also make people create new anonymous accounts just to mark rude. Not that it isn’t already happening now, but could get worse.

This is logical IMHO, this is on topic  talking aboit getting rides in almost any other thread is of topic, generally not positive so bound to get a rude click.

Btw I like the idea of giving a reason when marking something as rude. It makes it a bit harder to do, and gives a good opportunity to Learn if one gets one.

Not a bad idea. It hadn’t occurred to me, so I haven’t given much thought yet to the implications of it. But I do know that on a technical level it would be much harder for me to implement with the available tools and frameworks I have for this forum.

^ Exactly this.

Hi Sb. No problem, I don’t feel as though you have come down on me at all.

It is no secret I am the person with 48 Rude votes, down from 53 I might add.

When I PM’d you about this you kindly responded with some directives. I replied that I would make a very conscious effort to comply with those directives. And I have.

Yes, I as well as others do not necessarily like the anonymous system, for reasons stated…… BUT, this is “your house” & you set the tone as well as rules.
That is good enough for me. :+1:

wow, figured they would have been a couple spiteful ones.

I didn’t vote… just figure its one way to get SB’s attention to certain threads. He can decide from there.

Most other forums have a “Report to Mod” button, not Rude. IMO the counts should not at all be seen to the user.

That would be a better option IMO, and yours

I meant yours and then mine lol

Much appreciated sir!

Great post Teacher. SB, I agree it’s your house and you have every right to set the rules. I can live with that.

Thanks, I will take your opinions into account. I’m not inclined to make any changes just yet, but that option isn’t necessarily off the table.

…… :+1: ………

How about a system where the first, let’s say 4 rude registrations are invisible? This means “noise” will be filtered out to the member to avoid a negative experience. If a post is truly rude, it will most likely receive more than 5 rude registrations, and then it will become visible to the poster as a more genuine feedback. Just an idea…

Very good idea, thanks! Not sure yet how difficult that would be technically to implement.

Not always, because eventually a post will disappear if many different users mark it as rude. But it is theoretically possible for a lot of people to load the page at approximately the same time, see the rude post, and mark it as rude before it gets automatically removed.

Diagnosis: “are too!” “am not!” exchanged, over and over.

Last time I got a rude point, it was because I expressed an opinion.
I assume whoever dinged that comment did so instead of posting a public response.
For which self-control I thank whoever it was.
I looked and realized, yeah, I could have irritated someone.
It’s a good tool, working well, I think.
