So real-world example. I was running 4P XHP35 through a FET on 4S 18650. It was really bright, but the host couldn’t handle the heat. I’m guessing these would get me around 2,000 lumens less, but possibly similar lux and less heat? (in 4S instead of 4P, obviously)
Sounds about right. Though these will pull a lot of current so it will still be a lot of heat. But unless you use a good buck or boost driver you won’t see the efficiency gain over XPL V6. I think the real advantage of these over the XPL V6 is their ability to be driven harder in a direct drive situation.
I got my SST-40s that I ordered from Shenzhen Great Technology on AE. All three appear to be the real deal. I also got one from Kaidomain and it is also a real SST-40.
There are some slight imperfections though. The one from KD and one of the Aliexpress ones are slightly raised. Probably not enough to be a concern since there is still solder under the center of the emitter. I will probably try to get the Ali one seated correctly since I plan on driving that one harder than the others. The DTP copper feels soo much nicer compared to the thin aluminum boards the others are on.
About heat:
I tested in a convoy C8 host samsung 25R battery, 10x7135 3500ma driver and with xpl HI the light got 60°C after 15 minutes.
Same everything with SST40 I got 61°C.
The XPL HI output with full battery is 1056 lumens and the SST40 I measured 1122 lumens.
Im really liking the tint on this SST40 from both Shenzhen Great Technology and Kaidomain. Im not really a fan of colder tints but these turned out surprisingly nice. It has a pinkish white tint compared to the blueish Cree (cool white) emitters.
I have them DD’ed in a Convoy C8 and it is performing really well. Very happy with them.
I’ve experienced the same. Very nice uniform beam and tint. It’s not nice as in pure white. It definitely has a tint but as was said this tint is a pale purpley tint. Hard to describe as it’s not the normal led tint we are used to.
Has anyone thought about sticking dedomed SST-40s under carclo 10 mm optics? For example with Emisar D4.
There’s no PCB for it, but since die size is similar to the XP-L, it should be floody, but not all flood. And significantly brighter than XP-L HI…
