New Convoy C8 – Clearly better

It depends on the cat. Mine figured out the laser immediately, even as a kitten. So when I would try to get him to chase a laser, he would look at the spot, look at the laser in my hand, then give me a look like “Really? How dumb do you think I am?”

It also all but eliminates shadows from your field of view.

I hope not. There’re too many things already “regulated” by nanny-state governments. And you can find a nice powerful laser-diode in any blu-ray recorder.

I keep telling people who want to ban guns that when Terrorists™ start using bombs or even gasoline (anyone skeptical, look up the Happy Land Disco fire: ~80 lives snuffed out with a few gallons of gasoline) to do their nefarious deeds, they’ll be wishing that they’d go back to using guns. And all it takes is one idiot with keys to a truck to go plow through a crowd…

All that might do is to keep some idiot kid from shining a laser at a passing plane… oh, wait, they do that despite it being a federal crime with some serious jailtime attached.

I mean, c’mon, there’s been talk about banning or at least “regulating” 3D printers because of what someone might create. Or requiring any designs to go through some central clearinghouse for inspection first before allowing the object to be printed. (I can imagine the backlog on that… want to build a bike-light bracket, submit your design now, come back in 2021 when it gets approved.)

Too often “government” is the problem, so let’s not automatically look to it for “solutions”.

+1 for your answer Lightbringer!

:+1: :+1:

Sorry, no brighter moon.
Here are the numbers explained from xkcd:

He made a joke. Not serious.

But, but, they said they were here to help!?

I can’t agree with you more Lightbringer.

Lightbringer, perhaps this one is a “bit” more than 900mW…

As far as the tint questions, remember that in the same power binning a warmer tint makes much less lumens than a cool tint, so it would only be feasible that you would get more reflection from humidity from the brighter light…

Are you sure about that? I thought the binning was based on lumen output, not EM energy output.

As interesting as philosophy of governance is, it’s one of those topics which tends to get out of hand pretty easily.

Instead of responding with data on the effects of various governance strategies (data on this sort of thing tends to be counterproductive when humans are involved), I’m hoping we can stick to less fiery topics… like actually starting fires.

Dale, that is the laser you made for destroying wasp nests from a safe distance, no?

I know of at least one patented (I suppose) “laser turret” designed to eliminate mosquitos.

Also, hi-power laser + hoover = dead insect nest. Also works for those nasty spider webs inside the house.

Can anyone tell me how long I can run the C8 at 100% in let’s say 25-30 degrees C ambient temps until the heat buildup is too much. There is a runtime chart floating around which shows a max temp of 66 at about 40 minutes in with an ambient temp of 25(?), is 66 too high?

I can’t say if that’s as hot as one gets, or if those numbers are accurate, but I can say that 66c is not “too high” for the electronics. That heat won’t hurt your light. It may hurt your hand though. How tough are you?

Bottom line — if you can stand to hold it, its not too hot.

If you’re holding your light, it doesn’t get that hot. Your hand draws a lot of heat from the light. I think those run-time temperature graphs are done with the light tail-standing.

66°C is not at all a problem, especially with XML LEDs,
lights with XPL footprint and DD should have a DTP star, or the emitter itself gets too hot

Sorry if this was already answered, but does Simon make this new C8 xpl hi available in colors other than silver?

Yes. Message him on AE to request it.

3tronics does some beautiful powder coatings too.

Thanks! A grey C8 is calling my name… I see people get around 80,000 cd out of them in stock form - that would make for some impressive pocket thrower. My current go-to thrower is Thorfire VG-10, and that barely clocks in at around 12,000 cd.

You’ll be satisfied for sure. I have a C8 with a domed XM-L2 and an OP reflector, and it’s still easily my longest-reaching torch despite the throw-unfriendly setup. It laughs in the face of a 100m distance!
