Convoy L6... XHP70 Beast!

Oh, I know what you mean. I got 17.3 amps. It heats up super quick. I try to ramp down Narsil just until I see the output reduce a little bit and keep it there. It’s probably 5 to 7 amps if I had to guess. Then I use full power just for testing or for distance use. That’s more practical since I use it a lot as a work light.

Your l6 can turn on/off using side switch? Mine only changes modes.

Jason is running Narsil in his, same as me - modded, see his sig line.

NarsilM v1.1 will have a configurable ramping max, so you don't have to go to full FET on ramping, but dbl click to turbo goes full max. We did this for the GT Buck driver, and I incorporated it for general use with FET or 7135, FET+1, FET+1+n drivers as well.

I’m using ToyKeeper’s ramping with the side switch functional in my L6. Old, I guess, but very nice all the same.

Yep. Ever since I got my L6 I found the rear switch awkward. I’m so used to Maglites for the last 20 years, the 2D cell size. You can hold them behind the head and it’s balanced really well. You can also slip it in your back pocket very easily with that grip.

So I set off in search of a way to use the side switch for on/off. Kaidomain has a version of the FX30 driver that let’s you use the side switch for power. I put a description in my L6 thread. The stock FX30 driver only uses the side switch to switch modes. Convoy uses their own firmware on the FX30 driver and kept it similar, but added better mode spacing and a few other tweaks.

Then I swapped to the Texas Avenger driver with Narsil. Man I love that ramping and the power of a FET is awesome!

If you can do basic soldering, you can order a new driver and install it. It’s pretty easy. But if your not able to do that then you’ll need to pay someone to put it together for you.

I just recently found out Vinh of Sky Lumen was offering his version of the L6. He uses a fet driver custom made by Richard over at Mountain Electronics.

I actually like the tail mechanical switch as a lockout. ToyKeeper’s ramping firmware uses the side switch to fully control including on/off and the tail switch acts as a safety measure.

I believe it’s still using the ATTiny13A, so there’s only 64 stops in the ramp… still works fine and pretty much acts like Tom’s Narsil in operation. (Without all the options though, of course, due to space restraints.)

Jason, your lighted side switch method really helps me remember to fully shut it down when putting it away. I had a heck of a time getting it to work with this driver I built from scratch, but in the end it was worth the trouble. Thanks!

No problem, I like to help when I can.

The lighted side switch helps me a lot as well. I can set it down in a dimly lit place and be able to reach for it without hunting around. It’s matte black and disappears easily! Lol

Love the Narsil, and the Lexel built T/A drivers, but I still prefer the LD-2 and LD-2 M2 Linear drivers, because I can (cycle modes) using either switch, I also prefer the rear push button/tactical grip function over any e-switch. I like my 6D cell Mag-lite because I can rest it on my shoulder, and IF need be spin it over in a skull crushing/jaw busting down ward or side way swing! But that’s the only thing I like about it really, it’s soooooo under powered!

But I remedied that….awhile back……

how do you disassemble L6 side button?

I don’t see many throw numbers for the L6 here (but I do not visit this thread much, I can easily have missed it), so here is one:

Convoy L6, stock driver with resistor mod, light blue Liitokala batteries, smooth reflector, 5000K 80CRI XHP70.2, output 4300 lumen at 30 seconds, throw 102 kcd.

I’m quite happy with the 102 kcd btw, that big reflector does its job well! But Dale’s L6 must get over 200 kcd, right?

You need snap ring pliers that let you extend outward. It spins off counterclockwise.

Back when my light was FX30 driver with resistor mod, smo and sliced dome xhp70 it was 115 kcd (678m) which is on the low side. Matt at ASF with the same exact mods got 164 kcd (809m).

When you go FET (12 amps or so) your in a whole new territory.

Then the 70.2 with FET (17 to 18 amps) your in another whole new territory.

I’ll try and measure mine shortly just out of curiosity. It shouldn’t be much behind Dales.

The most difficult part of doing this mod was probably removing the retaining ring that hold the L6 side button. :disappointed: I had to use a tweezers because no snap ring pliers in hand.

Finished installing TA FET driver on L6 and mine draws 9.5A at the tail i had to extend the LED cable with small 24awg wire as i dont have bigger wire that fits the hole. I have AWG16 cable but that is too big i will change to a proper cable when i got bigger cable.

Now the question is how many lumens with 9.5A draw on the tail? it got hot alot faster now i mean a lot!

Bypassing what territories have been entered and just looking at numbers, my L6 with SMO reflector and (nice tint  ) XHP70.2 does 4500 lumen (just re-measured) with 100kcd throw, and the hottest XHP70.2 mod has about twice the output, so also about twice the throw.

Back at post #4264 here I mentioned my throw # of 195 kcd taken at 5m. Thinking that's bout best you can do with a domed XHP70.2.

It has the XHP70.2 P2 3B, SMO, full TA triple channel NarsilM mod, bypasses, etc.

That is on this same page and I missed it :person_facepalming:
All numbers look pretty consistent, and did anyone get even more throw with a sliced XHP70.2? Or has that not been done yet?

Hhmmmm, dunno if any measured #'s. Word is it doesn't help much, but not sure what that means. KB1428 has certainly dedomed anything and everything (), but not sure if he's got #'s, etc.

I got an SMO shipping today for the Haikelite MT07, already got the same XHP70.2 in it that does about 200 kcd with the stock OP at lower amps, so should bump well once converting the driver to FET based and swapping in the SMO.

Woah, hold on there. Doubling the 1 meter numbers does not even come close to doubling the throw. More like a 30% throw increase.

Throw is also very dependent on the focusing of the reflector. If you wanted max throw with the xhp70 you could slice the dome off to get a smaller hotspot and increase the throw, but you end up with an overall weaker output.

I stopped chasing throw and instead focused on a good balance between brightness and hot spot size.

When expressed in distance: yes just 30%, when expressed in kcd, throw is simply lineair with output.

I just did a few tests on my L6 with Liitokalas, 70.2, fet and smo. A rather disappointing 172 kcd. About 830m. Still, it’s impressive to see in person.

This is coming from an L6 that bone stock did 58 kcd 481m.

I remember that slicing the dome off my xhp70 gave a 24% boost, from 92,500 to 115,000. It might be worth it to a “throw seeker” to slice the 70.2 and see what happens.

If you did see a 24% boost in candela, that would take my 172 kcd to 213 kcd which would be 923m. That’s pretty impressive.
