"Group Buy" Interest: Q8 MCPCB for Luxeon V/SST40/XML/XHP50 Emitters

Maybe it is nice to add here or in OP for which specific LEDs this MCPCB board is suited and which components need to be added for the thermal measurement. Does it work without it, LEDS only?

I assume it needs a special driver?
The development thread is so huge, it might put off various buyers.

Maybe change the heading?

Would 1.6mm PCB thickness be ok, or it must be 2.0mm?

The stock board is 2mm and the reflector and bezel fit with no room to spare. The o-ring is not so much compressed that I expect it to get away with .4mm less compression.

But thermally, 1.6mm is no problem, the first prototype had a 1mm board and worked fine.

I was trying to figure out how what to change the heading to in order to make it more widely appealing and took a hard look at the board design in the first post.

I think the 12 and 6 o’clock LEDS would benefit from being reversed. Am I reading this wrong?

Good ideas on both points.

I know this isn't really a Group Buy situation, but that is the most common paradigm here for purchasing a newly developed product. Maybe change the subject to something like this:

The 6 oclock can’t be reversed without reducing the ground trace thickness, best to leave it like it is.

The 12 oclock LED could be switch around, although it seemed more confusing that way with the LED’s orientation switching so much, although it is still kinda confusing, so I doubt it would make a big difference. Just be sure to check the labels when installing the LED’s.

Which does point out one mistake, I forgot a - sign on one LED.

And besides, the gerber files are already at Kerui, I would not like to confuse them with different versions if changes are mostly cosmetic.

Yeah, it will not change the function at all, the - sign is not a real issue since the + is still there on that LED and basic common sense should tell people which way the LED goes lol.

I wrote it in the Q8 Thread of taschenlampen-forum.de: http://www.taschenlampen-forum.de/threads/blf-q8-skyray-king-groupbuy.48158/page-4#post-859253

TA, I am absolutely certain you have forgotten more about this than I even know. So please understand that I am confused rather than challenging you. Why would reversing the LEDs as shown in this MSPaint masterpiece shown below require a reduction in trace thickness? ( And are we talking thickness or width?)

Keep the 2 that have the ground trace to the middle
The 2 LEDs on the right add 2. ground trace outside

And I would rotate all other LEDs 90 degree so the negative side is outside, so you get max ground trace thickness around the board

Add a 3. wire hole so 2 positive leads can be going to the driver, also do 2 pads for positive one up one down

Add 4. wire hole so 2 negative leads can go to driver and 2. ground pad on rhe right

also add a solder point on the right to make a bridge to the other ground point, like 0.35mm2 lead should fit below the reflector

Put me down for 1 more please…

It will be a backup in case I screw up one of the first two…

Thanks!

Interested in two, thanks.

Here is an updated version with the pads rotated, it is cleaner like this and easier to understand:

Nice upgrade of the design TA! Perhaps even worthy to pass through to Kerui after all.

Interest list is at 61 boards now. I hope that on TLF there’s some additional interest.

I just PM-ed with Sundy, and Neal has indeed contacted her about the boards last monday. According to her, Neal said that I was going to tell her how many boards were going to be ordered. Which is a bit confusing because it will never be more (or less) than the minimal quantity of 230 boards, and the decision to go through with this is not by me but by Neal because he is going to pay for them.

I will contact Neal when he is back from his trip and ask about this.

In the meantime, with interest in just 61 boards, it still does not look like having these boards made is a very viable thing, unless all interested people are prepared to pay 3 dollar more per board. But perhaps Neal sees this different, and expects extra sales when the boards are there (and results using the boards are dripping in). I don’t know!

Didn’t know this thread was made, put me down for one.

I sent a message to The Miller to update to the link in the Q8 Modding thread to link here, not the other inactive thread.

OOps, looks like The Miller hasn’t been online for a few weeks, technical difficulties.
