Emisar D1 / D1S review

I was looking for a 50 mm head range, 18650 light, wit only side switch. I found it. If it would have a tail switch, I would not buy it.

Don't worry about the police , they got their own crappy lights that make them feel special

Mitko - not sure why the tail switch is so important. The physical placement or the fact it's a power cutoff switch and not electronic?

Is reverse or forward clicky more popular?

For police and security guards, the classic full size Maglites such as this one have been side switch lights for years, and very popular with police and security guards.

Looking at the latest SureFire "R1 Lawman", it seems to have a combo of side switch and tail switch, though I'm not clear on how the UI works.

Of course I don't think the Emisar's are an attempt to be a "tactical" light, and I like it that way. I would agree a tailswitch would go more in the direction of tactical, but for tactical use, I'd consider:

  • better and true HA III coating
  • possible SS bezel and tail
  • tail switch with full support for tactical use - press&hold is max, etc.

For me, keeping the length short and the tail useful for clean tailstanding is important.

Q: Is the 220 kcd on a SST-40 de-domed? Still don't know how to reliably de-dome a SST-40 with chemicals we can actually get.

For these models, I'd rather see a magnet added to the tails, specially for the D1 and D4.

Funny, I’ve been considering adding a tail switch to mine…

Ofc you will, i am pretty sure about that

Tom, that light has a huge potential with both switches, unfortunately Hank said: Nope!

its like Simon you know, i was begging him for 4 years about those remote switches, 3 weeks ago in a chat he mentioned that he should releace them earlier

Same with Emisar thrower, such a little step is needed to be the next C8…better and fully as it should be…P30 failed cause of the heavy gluing and lame reflector, S3 Pro cause of the boost driver( andf its hella lame too) and XHP35

Pretty reliable actualy, i have modded arround a dozen C8s and maybe 20 L2s this way, only 1 falut so far whitch is quite normal(a black pethrol looklike dot , some emitters do suffer from that after dding).

SSt40 L2 is the real thing m8, at 8 amps( paired with a black Li26650) it gives those lovely and steady 365-370k candelas and 2.2-3k lumens
Unbeatable
I use it as an offhand observation torch when hunting, running already for 2-3 months like every weekend

And several X6s too, even my own: do you know that at 7.5 amps and the new reflector it gives 115k cds?

According to the specifications, a D1s should be similar in throw to my Convoy L2. Has anybody compared the two? I might have to get one the next time mtn has them in stock if it’s fairly close.

I can see a custom builder using square threads at the tail, where the cell get’s changed out all the time, but I would think a wider more robust square thread would be used. These thin little square threads are a pita and I really don’t see how they’re better than the standard thread, even worse really as far as I’m concerned.

So these very thin little square threads will probably relegate this nice D1S to being a toy, used for lightning and candlelight but not serious usage outdoors as I find it too much hassle to cut square threads. (or the very thin ones to match this, anyway)

Anyone come up with a diffuser for the D1? With it’s flat tailcap, a diffuser would come in handy as a mini lantern and also give the light a more broad swath of light for up close work.

For $40 it is hard to complain about any aspects of the D1 or D1S, they are both excellent lights.
The weird square threads do prohibit practical modding of the tail though, and there isn’t much else to be done.

Of course, perfect being the enemy of good and all that, I think the D1 would be better suited for a proper mechanical tailswitch, probably reverse clicky given the current, instead of the D1S due to head size.
The D1 reflector itself is awesome and makes a nice custom…

Wow ThetaSigma, that looks really sharp! Ti? I like it!

Thanks, but it is Mn-Bronze which is my preferred metal. Another week and anywhere that has skin contact will be a lovely chocolate brown color.

Titanium would have been more than double the material cost and this already wasn’t cheap

Agree 100%

No, a C8 can handle much more abuse
The D1S bezel is very thin.
Drop it on a hard surface and the lens will surely crack, the bezel will definitely dent.

Anyone of you order a grey D1S plus 2x green 18350 tubes plus 2x clip from Neal?
That’s what i received today, but i ordered a grey D4 with 18350 tube and a clip. :person_facepalming:

I actually have a bronze bar that I bought to make an extension tube for my Ti X6. Decided against it so this bar is sitting around waiting for some brilliant idea to spring forth from my usual chaos.

Thinking about making a 14500 EDC with it, TeCu for the head/light engine.

At any rate, the light you made there looks really nice, along the lines of my favorite X6 or a 4Seven’s Quark, I have a weakness for that style.

FWIW, if anyone ever makes a dual-switch version with side e-switch and tail clicky switch, the Anduril code already has a compile-time option to support that. The tail switch acts as a momentary mode with optional latching, turning the light on at whatever regular ramp level it was at before. Or if the user holds the e-switch while turning it on via tail-switch, it can be a shortcut to something else (moon is the default, but it could also be turbo or strobe or whatever).

That was the main idea TK, yet, Hank said : nope, we do not have plans to redesigning it, whitch is quite unfortunate
X6R works( when reworked ofc) nearly the same way and paired with a SST40 it gives nearly 110k/125 with a good XPG

I realy hate when good ideas are wasted, realy

It is the flashlight that we realy do miss, alot

TBH, I wouldn’t like it as much if it was made for tactical use. It’d be bigger and heavier so I’d never have it with me. The best thing about the D1S is that it performs well above its weight class.

Indeed, 5mm longer and 10 grams heavier  Its true that for a casual hand use it might me practical ,yet i found that ppl who “live by night” do prefer dual switch type.

Thanks for your great work btw, you never failed us al those years, cheers!

87.4% of all stats on the internet are made up.

Not really a D1s competition, but Wouldn’t Sofirn C8 with e-switch work better than X6R?
