Emisar D1 / D1S review

I just got the green version of the D1. I can’t believe how beautiful it is. Makes me want to collect all the colors of the Emisars now.

Green is the color I had wanted for an Emisar but unfortunately I’ve been reading complaints the (new textured) green color coating is not durable and wears off easily. (is it even anodize?) So now I’m not sure I want it, that has delayed my decision to buy an Emisar altogether until I look into that first.

^ My green D1 is smooth. Ordered it mid-January.

I think the grainy finish is only on D4.

My D1 is smooth green and finish looks perfect. I didnt know the D4 green had rough texture. I thought only D1s had rough textured surface

That already exists. There are several different D1-compatible firmwares which could meet that criteria.

So for the green color the D1 is smooth finish and the D1S and D4 both are texture finish?

Can someone please confirm if this it correct or not?

You can get the latest status by going to Intl-Outdoor.com and checking whether it says “smooth finish” or “grainy finish” next to each color.

D1 listing does not show that.

D1 only comes in a smooth finish. If that changes, Intl-Outdoor’s page will change.

OK thanks, got it now…

Green color (currently):

D1……Smooth surface
D4……Grainy surface
D1S…Not available in green

Sorry Giorgo,
Typo, my D1s has an XP-L2 that has been freed of it’s silicone.

Just received my grey D1s today, and can’t wait for darkness so I can see the beautiful 5D tint in action!

There’s one issue I’ve got though - the switch is a lot stiffer than the ones on my D1 and D4, and requires far more pressure for it to click. Is there any way to (easily) change that?

Weird, first I’ve heard of the switch being any different. Has anyone else noticed that?

It takes about twice as much pressure to press than the switches of the other two Emisar lights. Not a huge problem, but if there’s an easy solution to make the switch more responsive I’d like to try it.

Maybe they changed the switches and we’ll see the stiffer one used across the line?
Maybe it’s meant as a workaround for the problems with accidental activation?

Just guessing…

It did actually occur to me that it makes it less likely for the light to turn on in my pocket (which has happened twice with the D1). Maybe I’ll leave it and see how I get on with with a harder press.

I know some people have griped about how the Emisar lights feel in - hand, so I thought I’d show this…

I was using some blue Sugru for another project (un-cured silicone) and had quite a bit left over, so I rolled it into the handle (battery tube) of my D1s. Worked out pretty neat, especially seeing as how the nice blue color ano wasn’t offered in this light.

I rolled my ball of Sugru and wrapped it around the middle of the tube, then rolled it out on the counter like a pastry roller til it filled the major part of the tube, using a little water on the counter top to make it smooth. So now my D1s has a silicone insulated grip panel.

My D1S switch feels about the same as my D1 and D4
