What did you mod today?

Today I finished the following mod to my Lumintop Tool AA:

  • Lexel’s 15mm drvr running BistroHD
  • Red illuminated, spring bypassed tailcap
  • Noctigon STAR with NW XPL HI

It now draws 3,6Amp from a 14500keeppower. Temp. stepdown after 1 minute.
Lux at 1mtr at 4.2V jumped from 3340lux to 13986lux.

My new EDC!

Super coool!!! Did the driver fit well?
I am using a 15mm MTN single sided driver as I throught I wouldn’t be able to put a double sided driver on it…
And that light switch…I might need one for mine :smiling_imp:
Nice

Thanks!
Driver fits well, the head screws down perfectly.

It had to be sanded down slightly, to fit the pill.

Nice work  It surely is a niiiice light, and with that mod, definitely worths being EDCarried

For the tailcap mod, have a look over Here

I always EDC AAA’s, but if you really need them for something they are depleted quickly.
I really like the Tool AA’s size. Still stealthy in a jeans. Its definately a keeper! Very happy how it turned out

Very nice mod dutchee! The Noctigon ledboard was also trimmed a bit I guess?

Emitter swap.
Out: XP-L Hi cool, in: Nichia E21A sm203 R9050 warm! on my custom 119 board trimmed to shape to fit in the pill, center piece was left out to get the emitting surface of the (lot thinner) new led in the focal plane of the reflector.

Old output: 600-ish, new output 260. Max. current on a fresh battery 2.5A. Spot is smaller but spot brightness seems not much different. Beamshot is at 2.5 meter. I especially like the efficient performance on lowest setting: 1.5 lumen at 6.7mA current, so that should run for 4 days on a 700mAh 16340.

Thanks for the tip  I will take a look on that!

BTW, does the reflector work well with the XPL-HI LED?

I tried to use it with other leds (not the stock one) and I was getting some rings on the beam.
I then opted for a Luxeon V under a Pebbled TIR lens (the 16mm MCPCB was also trimmed)!

Thanks, yes I trimmed it a bit by hand. And reamed out the holes in the pill a bit to accomodate the higher gauge wires.

Wow, nice mod as well. You seem to mod one every day

Is that a white wall?! Weird looking die. That’s a very nice warm nightstand light, but not really an efficient one :person_facepalming:

At lowest ‘nightlight’ it is pretty efficient for such a warm 90CRI led actually, but it is a small battery of course.

It is a white wall and an extreme warm 2000K led

MascararumB, reflector works great with the led. But that’s me not being a beam profile snob. It throws nice though with a usable hotspot.
However I didn’t perfectly center the led.
I filed down the noctigon asymetrical and it was a snug fit to the pill. So the led couldn’t center very well. But for me its okay.

I looked at the luxeon V as well. Nice led, but I had this one still lying around. Also I don’t know if it can mess with the illuminated tailcap.

Yes I would call that extreme haha. Nice, I hate all these cold blue lights.
But 260lm at 2.5 Amp is a bit steep for daily all round usage… But nice for nights at home! Where’s the wine bottle?

Here’s the led & beam at 2.5mtr MascaratumB:

Thanks for your answers and pictures Dutchee! I guess that being XPL-HI doesn’t create the “rings” that I saw in mine with the XP-G2 and the Luxeon V, before the TIR.
Even not being completely centered as you said, there is not much “noise” in the beam! Nice work once again
I am tempted to get another Tool AA to do something similar to what you’ve done
Unless LT releases a differente version of the light with some corrections (UI, Driver, LED :p)

Thanks again mate

Two Cafe lights from used materials (except the drivers and the LED module):

More Info:

Swapped out the led in my T20T with an old dedomed sst-90 4500k. Results are not quite what I wanted, the tint seems a bit green to my eye’s. Plus the firefly mode doesn’t light up the new led. I think I’ll try a different led. The led shelf had a step in it so I lathed the shelf flat to suit the larger led.

Haven’t seen one of those for a while.

An SST-90 still looks cool!

Yeh, I actually like the look of the led itself :sunglasses: but in this situation not much of it can be seen.

Simple mod today. Installed 219C 4000K into Lumintop Prince. Also added spring to the driver, so flat-tops work now.
